Worf? March 5, 2014 6:08 AM   Subscribe

What's with Wharf Worf?

Not a call out by any means, but just wondering if the first post from last night spawned the rest, or if this was some rip in the space time continuum and Worf came spilling out.

When looking at the front page, I first thought I had somehow accidentally performed a search for Worf / Star Trek:TNG posts this morning, and then I thought perhaps Michael Dorn had passed away.

It just seems, to me, a bit weirdly specific to have so many posts on Worf in such a short period of time, and worth a mention.

Apt synchronicity, on the topic of related posts. I decided to keep this one even though it was posted 23 seconds later, if that's alright with everyone.

I think it's just a little meme - two Worf posts popped up by coincidence and people started to riff on it? I've been watching the posts as they come in and as far as I'm concerned they're basically fine with or without the punning aspect, so I'm not inclined to get in the way of the joke as long as it's not breaking anything.

It reminds me of "Elephant Day".

I was tempted to make a post about prune juice but to all appearances that is the one manufactured good that hasn't been visited by How It's Made.

For the curious, it appears that prune juice is made by macerating prunes in boiling water and filtering out the solids, and not by squeezing them for whatever pitiful fluid remains in them.

I'm really not sure a) why people felt the need to make multiple threads when the standard MeFi practice is to add a comment to the relevant open thread and b) why the mods let them stand, but overall, it's not really a big deal to me.

Well, it's not multiple threads on the same subject, it's multiple threads on various unrelated subjects connected by a tenuous linguistic thread. So not really an issue there.

b) why the mods let them stand

Today is a good day to shrug. If people don't like aggressively make bad posts or otherwise go out of their minds, it's not a super big deal and it seems like folks like a little whiff of wackiness now and then.

Used to be "stunt posting" was somewhat frowned upon here.

Usually it is. Usually stunt posting as we see it is someone who is cheesed off about some sort of mod/MetaTalk thing and decides to make a post on the front page thumbing their nose at something/someone. Theme-based days are rare enough and usually amusing enough that unless people are doing something shitty to one another they actually encourage community cohesion and don't discourage it. Ergo they are okay. And usually it gets One Post Too Far and we start deleting post if they get out of hand.

I saw the third post go up, and was excited for the imminent appearance of Worf Day, but while I am a TNG person, I know my limits, and that I cannot possibly add to this community's body of knowledge about our favourite Klingon lieutenant. I googled "wharf" idly; the first link was a news report about the recent death of one of the Bushmen, and that struck me as a legitimately interesting FPP worthy topic - a very unique busking method - that had current relevance and was also apposite for the day. I may have banged the "wharf" gong a little loudly, but it was early in the morning and I figured subtlety was never going to be on my side.

Mostly, though, I just want to say that upon awakening this morning, I grabbed my phone and went to the blue a little more eagerly than usual and the second I saw grouse's post, I broke into just the biggest fucking grin.

Fry: "Hey, as long as you don't make me smell Uranus." *laughs*
Leela: "I don't get it."
Professor: "I'm sorry, Fry, but astronomers renamed Uranus in 2620 to end that stupid joke once and for all."
Fry: "Oh. What's it called now?"
Professor: "Urectum. Here, let me locate it for you."
Fry: "Hehe, no, no, I think I'll just smell around a bit over here."

I found out about this cool method of reading quickly. The key points are: Widen your eye span, Avoid skip backs, Read silently and Flex your reading rate.

I'm considering making a post about it, but eh. It's kind of light.

June 13th is Moderators' Day, JHarris. I keep meaning to add it to the wiki, but, y'know, procrastination.

This has been the greatest Worf Day ever! In closing, Klingon joke.

I've added it to the calendar, in addition to a number of other things mentioned here and on the wiki.

Star Trek: 10 Life Lessons You Can Learn From Worf
The Ever-Powerful Importance Of Family

Worf abandoned his son. I don't think he saw him or spoke to him between the ages of 8 and 18. At least, he had no idea what was going on his son's life in the years prior to his son's defecting to the Klingon empire and joining the navy. He gave the kid a complex about falling short of his cultural heritage, then was openly ashamed of his son when he tried to live it out. Bad dad, Worf, bad dad.

And then, when he met his son again as an adult, he concluded that Alexander was a miserable failure not worth bothering with!

If there's anything Worf teaches us, it's that family is meaningless.

I saw a wereworf drinking synthahol in Ten Forward

WEREWORF

1. Lt. Cmdr. Worf bites someone, Geordi maybe, after a replicator malfunction causes Ten Forward's synthahol to be replaced with real alcohol and he goes on a bender (it was an initiation prank from Wesley, who has temporarily fallen in with the "bad crowd" on the starship*), and he starts turning into another of him at the full moon.

2. Unfortunately, that episode they visit a planet with a moon with an extremely rapid orbit, causing a full moon every 24 seconds. OH NO G'HUCK

3. Geordi has to fix the warp core if they're going to leave the planet. Everything he fixes in 18 seconds is undone with a sudden RARR as a sudden maddened klingon smashes it with his fists.

4. When Geordi tries to walk away, when he goes into Klingon mode he sprints back and delivers a good kick to the machinery, and Klingons can run pretty far in six seconds. Worf watches this with a beer, smirking and making a theatrical "what you gonna do?" shrug.

5. Eventually Data takes over and completes the repair, and a cure is found for Geordi involving re-engineered Borg nanoprobes or some such crap, but forever after when the Enterprise goes into warp it makes humorous Mel Blanc-style jalopy noises.

* Three boys who wear backwards baseball caps. Gangs on a Federation starship tend to be really sad.
