What's the worst post you posted on the blue? February 27, 2014 6:32 AM   Subscribe

Lipstick Thespian points out that my latest post about clothes is "absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever read on Metafilter." They've got a point! I admit I've posted some real stinkers in my time that I would gladly take back. So I'm wondering, what are some things that you yourself have posted, that in retrospect you would take back, and why?

For my own post, I think the K-Hole content was miles above more interesting (millennials! belonging! individualism!) than the link I posted, which was just a shallow, timewasting spin on "fashionistas talk past non-fashionistas" Other posts of mine were.... wow, so obviously flamebate that they should have just been deleted immediately.

i would take back my post on salt -bad science journalism on food is not a good post for metafilter.

i'd also take back the post about the male sex drive - i mistakenly thought far more people were aware of michael ian black and the way i read the linked post was very different than the way many others read it.

in retrospect both of these are easy to see as flame bait, even though i didn't post either of them with that intention.

(Hey I'm not taking judgement from Lipstick Thespian, they just eloquently pointed out the same thing that I have come to believe, which I mentioned in the post - that there was a much better post than what I posted, and in hindsight, I should have posted the better post and not the worst post. Sorry that I didn't make that more clear!

I hadn't looked back at my FPPs in a long time until this post prompted me to, and it's kind of interesting how many of them I don't remember at all, or that I can't imagine why I would post. My drinking problem might be worse than I realize.

All in all, this is probably the single dumbest thing I've ever posted on Metafilter, and I suspect it only survived deletion because I was such a noob.

"so obviously flamebate"

I've never flamebated but some of my friends have, and I don't judge. I feel that whatever you do with your body - or whatever two consenting adults do with their bodies - is none of my business. It's not for everyone, in no small part because of the high risk of burns. But hey, you know ... whatever you're into. Like I said, I don't judge. As always, though, if you're with someone that's into that scene and they attempt to do this with you or to you without your express consent, get out of that situation and DTMFA (dump the misanthropic flamebater already).

Rebent, you really shouldn't feel bad about this. You honestly thought it was interesting so you posted it. What else could we ask? It actually generated really interesting discussion as people came through and posted more in-depth links about normcore. For me, I posted a bunch of links about the Krokodil scare last year, and got called out in meta about how dumb they were. Fair play, and it could have been deleted, but if it had been we wouldn't have learned a ton of interesting shit about what Krocodil actually is, how heroin production works, Russian addiction issues, and the facile nature of US blog reporting on Russia. Don't be defensive, be thankful there is an informed community here that will, on the whole, patiently correct misleading links with more robust info (and a crew of discerning mods that make a judgement call about whether a link is worthwhile of being discussed or too inflammatory to not just be deleted).

(And seconding Solarion, somewhat - in the midst of the Gaiman bunfight, there was some really interesting discussion of Minnesota taxation, the Minnesota legacy fund, Minnesota's Tea Party contingent, the strengths and weaknesses of Minnesota public radio and the cultural primacy of Garrison Keillor... I just wish I'd known better and included more detail in the FPP, which might have tuned out some, though not all, of the static.)

Eight years ago, I was struggling to teach myself CSS and web design when I stumbled on a tutorial for customizing pages on the then-dominant social network.

"Say, this is useful!" I said. "I bet that Meta-Filter site I just joined would appreciate this and offer insightful commentary on it!"

And that's how I posted about best design practices for Myspace.

I remember the thread as a trainwreck, with a flaming space station deorbiting on top of the crumpled cars, but, reviewing it now, I see it went about as well as could possibly be expected. A few people even nudged in polite thank-yous between the guffaws. (Not that I'm ever, ever posting about design practices or Myspace again, though.)

In 2003 and 2004, I didn't understand what Metafilter was for, and I made six boneheaded posts in the spirit of "This is important to me and PEOPLE MUST KNOW!" This streak culminated with this awful post about political correctness on university campuses.

I realized that I didn't get Metafilter and I needed to stop posting until I did. I stopped submitting FPPs for three-and-a-half years and then returned with my post about barbed wire, whose reception seems to indicate that I now understood what MetaFilter was about.

I would give anything to remove those six dumb posts.

The post I actually regret making most I regret mostly for my framing. What I wanted to highlight was a bunch of charming, vaguely magical-realist vignettes about what ice hockey players were doing while they were locked out of the NHL, but I botched the framing and the discussion was entirely about hockey and not at all about the vignettes.

The post I probably should regret most is one I made while blackout drunk and being heckled/egged on by a user who's since left the site, but that one somehow went OK.

Of 92 posts, there's 18 I wish I hadn't posted. My only critique of moderation on here is that the bar for posting is perhaps a little too low, and more of mine should have been deleted by the mods. Or, better, I need to take responsibility and pause to consider "Is this really a cool thing? Honestly?"

Bad posts include this one as it's pointing out poor journalism (completely unoriginal), this one as giving publicity to a singer who doesn't need it and is also pseudo-moking, this one as "teccies say silly things" is completely unoriginal, this one as the conflicting sources meant it didn't actually make sense, this one as after an email chat with a certain Mr T. Berners-Lee it turned out to be actually factually incorrect, this one as again factual inaccuracies, this one as I should have linked to all the videos but didn't and got called out for it on a MetaTalk, this one as the title was both sarcastically stupid and misleading (it's nothing to do with torrenting) causing a derail and -ve feedback, this one as it's a non-story, and this one as again sarcastic title but Rebecca Black, and all the crap she put up with, grew on me as someone who fought and made a come-back despite being vilified.

So self-rating my own posting as at best "variable in quality".

I phrased it that way because the surprise of finding out what was in the house delighted me, and I enjoyed being surprised when I read the article. I didn't realize how much it sounded like an Upworthy article title, and it occurs to me now that this is exactly what the "More Inside" is made for and it would have made much more sense to have the More Inside be "surprise: it's a pump! and here are some other examples of infrastructure being disguised as other things".

I just found it amusing that a relatively obscure book on physics started selling big time after a copy turned up in the back seat of Tiger Woods' SUV on that fateful night a couple years ago. But the results went awry in such a diversity of directions that I was astonished some of those directions even existed.

I would take back my first post about early twentieth century Latino guitar composers, because in the course of the intervening years I've come to feel that that music is pretty uninspired, that megaposts are dumb (mine wasn't quite one, I guess, but it was straining in that direction), and that mostly linking to a record company website and Wikipedia is pretty lame, since if you have to do a Google search to find something on the internet that has to do with the topic you want to post about then it's probably not in the spirit of "best of the web."

In this one on Blackfish, I didn't realize that the other documentary I posted about was 16 years old, not from last January, which I claim in the post. Realization of that occurs here. I even watched the entire thing and didn't put two and two together.

In this one about Maria Bamford, I didn't realize she had a breakdown after this show, not before, and while the premise of the show was that she just had a breakdown, it was a fiction at the time the show was being recorded. Realization occurs here.

In this one I claim Bezos' company Blue Origin had just launched and vertically landed a rocket. It actually happened a year before I posted. Realization occurs here.

This one about Kristen Wiig's last SNL was only visible to a fraction of our audience. Realization occurs here.

I think this post is the one I'm most proud of, taking literally months of work and research. But not only did I leave a glaring typo in the headline, I got the very last fact wrong. Typo realized here.

This one was too clever by half.

And in this one, only my second post to the blue, I misspelled the subject's name.

Why you people continue to let me post, I do not know.

On the other hand, in this one I guessed that the whole world had been duped into thinking a chimp was a movie star, and it turned out I was right and the world was wrong.

The way I live my life, any post I make is likely to be made after a recent orgasm.

I've had a few posts deleted because I was confused about some basic fact when I posted it and realized my error too damn late. I think the dumbest thing I ever did was participate in elephant day, a now-forgotten phenomenon where a few posts that were coincidentally about elephants happened and then a whole bunch of stunt posts, including mine. That being said, I think the post itself was pretty interesting.

I've done a lot of posts about subjects nobody gives a shit about, such as my post about the amazing song Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls, whose title I have repeatedly pilfered for my own work. And the video of Hitler in a dress singing showtunes about being gay. And my obsessive post on the monkey gland fad.

I've done a lot of posts about subjects nobody gives a shit about

My biggest flop was a post about about a newly discovered song by Harry Nilsson, which happened to be a song written for the L.A. Dodgers. I really thought people would be interested in hearing a new song by him -- even the novelty song angle -- but I think the only interest it garnered was from a couple of people who thought their sports team's song was the best. Not a disaster, but I'd go back and add a "sad trombone" tag if I could.

There's one post I made early on. I don't regret the link, which was good, but I used the article's catchy time-travel/kill-Hitler framing, which completely derailed and dominated the thread, far overshadowing the original point of an interesting piece. It was entirely my fault and totally avoidable.

Was a good lesson for me to choose my words carefully, and remember how many people won't rtfa, but also won't really read the op.

On preview, that sounds snitty, it's not intended to be. The error was mine

My entire posting history is filled with regrets (but more from my 'wendell' era showing that I've either matured or changed my personal definition of 'regretable').

Here's The Worst of Wendell, starting with some of wendell's least-favorited (after favorites were introduced):

The Best Phallic Image You Will See in the News Today
Philately Will Get You Nowhere
Anatomically Incorrect and Not Safe For Wendell
(one favorite each, ALL from limeonaire - dude you're worse off than I am, let me recommend a therapist)

In honor of the 8th Anniversary of MetaFilter, here are 8 YouTube links to... CAT SCANS (WAY too Meta for Meta)
"Saddam did not wendell"
Why are clowns considered scary by kids of all ages? (with the easily misread title LOLCLOWNSNOT)
It's the Pew News IQ... Comin' right at you...
Shark Virgin Birth! Praise Jawsus! (punchline stolen from Halcyon)
(NO favorites)

And before the favorites (leaving me to judge my own awfuliciousness)
ME mocking the company name Blonder Tongue
Celebrating the 70th anniversary of Social Security AND the Roller Derby
Was I really first to do a Ronald Reagan obitfilter post? WHY?
A now-deeply-regretted semi-mocking post on Asexuality
The Douglas Adams/Dilbert-sponsored Weasel Awards (now with dead link - even Adams regretted them)
A post about Emoticon Abuse that abused the soon-to-be-disabled BIG html tag
Just for the record, I am NOT Wendigo...
and the time I wrote in a FPP "it's been such a bad day for new posts on MeFi, I had to do something"
My early days on MeFi were so filled with over-editorializing and newsfilter (mostly with YahooNews future dead links) that I'd call all of 2000 my Worst Posts on MeFi, with one exception (and it's kind of a double).

In fact, my last post under my former wendell identity probably influenced my decision to change names.

And this doesn't even include my DELETED posts... I will have much more to attone for... later; I'm taking a break for lunch.

I try to post clever comments, but as MeFi's own jscalzi sez, "The failure mode of clever is asshole." Probably the worst things I've posted have been comments striving to be clever and superior. In that case, the success mode is asshole. Those comments of mine make me seriously reconsider my belief that I possess any good judgement at all.

I would probably take back all of my FPPs, ever. I am pretty comfortable with my commenting history, but when it comes to composing FPPs I think the part of my brain responsible for critical thinking and taste and restraining hysteria goes on vacation. Inevitably if I look back on them even a few weeks after the fact I wince. So I've stopped writing them and leave that job to the experts.

As oneswellfoop, I deeply regret "50 Worst Pageviews Ever" for being very intentionally NOT the Best of the Web (but still rather well received).

Also my "Petition to Bring Back Mayor McCheese", for intentionally and snarkily skirting a MeFi prohibition, Pepsi-Bluing McDonalds (which everyone knows serves Coke), pointing to a temporary site that got taken over by an equally-temporary bad political blog, a Time Magazine link and, well, general cheeziness...

My most embarrassing Front Page typo: "Romeo in blueblack jeans". Second place: It's from Belgium, not Germany, dummy.

My most-regretable post title is: "My suspenders are attached directly to my genitals... Los Osos, California!"

My most uncharacteristically NSFW: The Frog's Bollocks (and others).

And my topic-most-repeated-ad-nauseum, posting about Lake Superior State University's List of Banished Words (and other similar "Word of the Year" "Worst Word of the Year") announcements, first done at the end of 2003 and last done at the end of 2012 (when I felt too guilty to include 'Previouslys') and in recognition of my self-control*, not repeated at the end of 2013
* I lied, I was sick with the flu over the holiday, but I do promise never to do it again,

(and I haven't even gotten into my DELETED posts...)

Going over my history of Deleted Posts, I'm surprising not-so-ashamed... a few undiscovered Doubles, a few single-link newsfilters that fell over into outragefilter (but I WAS outraged at the time), only six deletes since I became oneswellfoop, including one self-admitted "Single Link, Short, One Joke YouTube" that was my single worst example of letting my love of punnery control me.

And from my wild days as wendell:

Of course, a contentious Global Warming/Bush Administration post with TWO BoingBoing links easily earned a first-comment reference to the "this will not wendell" meme.

And an otherwise unremarkable story that reminded me of a great Smothers Brothers routine (since deleted from YouTube) earned me this deletion message from coretx in 2009: "I know you're kind of new here, but this sort of thin news-of-the-weird blurb really doesn't make for good post material." That was an owie, matt.

Still, I found much more to be ashamed of in posts that didn't get deleted... another reason I LOVE this place!

"I've never hated a video or a Metafilter post more." Which, okay, fine. But I don't regret it.

This post about Taco Photography was not the best of the web, I admit.

And, sadly, my first post ever was about Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls. I only regret that because the film turned out to be rubbish.

My worst one was down to procrastination. There had been this nifty music browsing website posted to Mefi around 2009 -- thesixtyone. Some time afterward, they implemented a sweeping redesign and published a free and neat-looking iPad app. I meant to post about it at the time, but let it slide for a few years.

In the meantime, the redesign had proved unpopular with the site's userbase and eventually drove most of them away, suffocating the community. The owners apparently gave up and moved to other projects, but the site and app remained online and functional, albeit with scads of bugs like being unable to create new accounts (or log in to existing ones).

By the time I got around to posting it, it seemed like all was normal on the surface, but the content turned out to be stale and basic functions almost unusable. Very frustrating.

Other stuff:

This BREAKING INTERNATIONAL SCANDAL involving drug cartels and Iranian spycraft didn't really amount to much.

I still like the series, but this intro was best left to the professionals.

The Creature Creator was cool, but Spore was a dissapointment, and its one-time shits-and-giggles video blog did not merit a post.

And Offplanet Films was hard done by one of the worst above-the-folds I've ever written, here or anywhere else.

God, I'm really sorry I flamed the fires of anybody's anticipation with that post. I regret the fiery Metatalk thread I made after like being a member for a week, 'cause oh man, don't do that.

No, inasmuch as public confession was done away with some time ago.

In any event, having confessed your sins, you make an Act of Contrition (I am sorry for screwing up), hear the Prayer of Absolution (You are forgiven...) and then go to perform whatever penance the priest has offered (...but go fix it).

Despite the cliches associated with it, the sacrament of Reconciliation is quite beautiful.

I had a dream last night that Metafilter accidentally shut down the city of Boston with an inadvertent gay rights protest when someone used Google Maps to plan a meet up that was going to walk to the museum that was holding an exhibit on the history of legos in GBLTQ culture. Google Maps sent us over a freeway bridge with no pedestrian access.

Afterwards, Mathowie got in a shouting match with Ted Nugent about it, which we found out about during the inadvertent protest due to a front page story in a time traveling copy of the Boston Globe. I actually exclaimed, “it’s a time traveling copy of the Boston Globe, kind of like from the TV show Early Edition.”

When we got to the museum, the staff all congratulated us and waved a pink apron like a finish line flag. They were a little upset that Boston commuters were going to associate the traffic jam with their exhibit, though.

The gay legos exhibit was really freaking awesome and was totally worth it.

(Should I make this a FPP?)

I don't think I regret it, but I do feel weird that my post on Laverne Cox (which I thought was a kind of small-scale story) spawned two MetaTalks and a combined thousand-plus comments and led to a lot--a lot--of teeth-gnashing.

There's always the possibility of someone (not me) doing an FPP over the weekend about Sarah "predicting" the current Ukraine-Russia problems a few years back.

most of my regrets are for not researching or framing posts more thoroughly. One of my challenges is being short of time to really do good depth on any post, as I'm usually going "huh" and tossing something together during downtime at work which on reflection is a really terrible time to try to frame a mefi post or look into the backstory, and then it leads to me over editorializing or whatever.

so maybe I'll try to do a better job of saving interesting stuff to evernote or whatever to work on the framing and fleshing out part but honestly I doubt it. I'll probably just not make many or any FPPs. there are so many other users on here who are better at it and have more time to devote to doing it right.

- "I am Worf, Son of Mogh."
- "Fans of both Joy Division and Star Trek TNG may be amused by the imposition of the pulsar graph as Worf's ridges"
- "I wasn't drawn to Worf at first... it was just another job."

... and also a "If you go down to the Wharf today..."
