This Thursday, A.D. November 27, 2013 12:42 AM   Subscribe

The time: Thursday at noon US Eastern time, 9 AM US Pacific, for approximately nine hours (maybe more, if special features are planned).
The place: Joel Hodgson's website, www.mst3kturkeyday.com.
The other place: our own chat server, chat.metafilter.com.
The reason: to watch a guy in space and his two wisecracking robots mock terrible movies.

As we discussed in the recent Turkey Day thread, many years ago it was a tradition for Comedy Central to show a marathon of Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes on Thanksgiving Day. And this year, the 25th anniversary of the show's premiere on KTMA television in Minnesota, Joel Hodgson is resurrecting this most turkulous tradition by hosting a live stream of six episodes on the website listed above, chosen by fans responding to the call for suggestions on his Twitter feed.

Since there are lots of MSTies on Metafilter, I suggested in that thread that we meet in Chat at the appointed time and watch the stream together. Of course we'll be leaving and joining back in periodically throughout, I imagine, it being a Big Family Day and all. But if you have some spare moments this year, why don't you join us celebrating Thanksgiving in the most appropriate manner -- by watching eye-peelingly bad movies.

This sounds like a cool idea. I'll try to be there. Thanksgiving is always a Huge Family Day for us, so I'll probably catch the ending at most.

Not having a Big Family for Big Family Day, I will be there in my red jumpsuit with my special parts (mostly my special Green Bean Casserole made with Cream of Broccoli Soup instead of Mushroom), ready to point out any really bad puns they have neglected to include in their mockery. I may already be square, but I'll be there.

Exciting! Thanks for this MeTa, I missed the original post.

I'll be able to join in early for a while, and then my cat Torgo will take care of the place while I'm away.

That's not how watching Mystery Science Theater should be. It should be secret and shameful and leathery and dirty.

This is a great use of the chat room. Just fair warning that if something is going screwy, we may be a little slow on the draw getting it repaired, so make sure you drop a note to the contact form (and/or find us on IM) because that will be the fastest way to get someone.

The winter term of my freshman year, my drug-doing-maybe-dealing roommate who thought he was leading me astray, another guy, and I would get high before watching old MST3K VHS tapes most weeknights. However, before this could happen, my roommate, fearful that he was ruining my life, made sure that I had done all of my homework.

Perhaps not coincidentally, I had a 4.0 grade point average that term.

About five hours until it begins.

The stream page seems to be at http://www.mst3kturkeyday.com/mst3k/marathon.html, which is also where www.mst3kturkeyday.com leads. Unfortunately for some of us, it says only US and Canada streams, boo.

The page can also be loaded on YouTube directly at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_jrJCRlItM.

For whoever that was in chat that expressed interest in my Torgo Death March ringtone: link (7.0M zip). Bonus ringtone: the dance music from Creeping Terror. The unlooped originals are included. Not that you can really tell the difference, I think they were made by looping a clip in the first place, but they are longer.

The full roster was: Space Mutiny, I Accuse My Parents, Werewolf, Cave Dwellers, The Final Sacrifice, and Mitchell. And then, Joel's final present-day goodbye reminded us to have a Patrick Swayze Christmas (and we saw Servo and Crow sitting down at the table with Joel for Thanksgiving dinner), and then they ran the Patrick Swayze Christmas sketch/song, and that was the end.

So good, you guys. I had such a great time, even though I had to miss Final Sacrifice to go eat turkey. I hope they do this again in future. I mean, I can watch episodes on disc or file if I want to, but there's something about having a bunch programmed by someone else just flowing into my house.

Why is Werewolf so perfect? We watched in our own separate MST3K marathon despite the fact that I've seen it 9 thousand times.
posted by The Whelk at 9:11 PM on November 28, 2013

Since I'm the only MSTie in the house, I paused the live stream and let everyone else watch football. That's not how live streams work I guess. Here's hoping someone grabbed the thing and will put it up in its entirety at some point.
posted by ob1quixote at 9:32 PM on November 28, 2013

The Whelk, you are so right. I mean...it has almost everything. The uncannily-Martin-Sheen-voiced Joe Estevez, the baggy editing, the accents, the flat-affect female lead, the janky special effects--plus, in the host segments, the "Where O Werewolf" girl group song PLUS Mike turning into a werecrow, all topped off by the spectacular final-credits song medley that never fails to cheer me up. TUSK!

it was a tremendous amount of fun watching that with everyone. It's gotten me to wondering if there's any way to set up a private MeFi MST3K streaming internet channel?
posted by JHarris at 2:42 AM on November 30, 2013

Somebody in the mefightclub irc channel used to stream mst3k occasionally using livestream. I'm not sure what goes into it from the streamer's end, but I think it's free? The connected clients get an ad every now and then. You of course need to have the video to stream it to their site in the first place, and the bandwidth to do so reliably. It has a built in chat system so it wouldn't clog the existing chat.

There might be better solutions than livestream as this was about a year ago, but it worked well enough.

MCMikeNamara, that is one heart-warming stoner story. Serious good guy Greg stuff. Even the part where you weren't sure if he was dealing.

Meanwhile I stonedly let me brother in law take three separate one hitter tokes the other day without assessing his tolerance level and descended him into the spins and subsequent unconsciousness at the ripe old age of thirty something
