Niche feature for three people October 24, 2013 5:55 PM Subscribe
Hey, we just implemented the Windows 8.1 "live tiles" feature for the main MetaFilter site, but since I don't know anyone with Win8.1, I can't really test it. If someone with Win8.1 could test it, screenshot it, and let us know if it works?
(then we can think about adding it to all the other subsites)

And here it is medium. Wide is just like big but shorter, small size is just the logo.

And with a single screenshot I've revealed my real name a location. Good thing I don't give a damn about anonymity.

You know, at first I didn't use it at all ever, but since upgrading from 8 to 8.1 I've started using Metro more... and, honestly, you know, it's kind of slick!

Is this a good place to ask for Retina quality icons for iOS homepage bookmarks for the subsites? The blue one looks so good compared to the jaggedy green and grey ones.

Still not sold on the Metro/Modern interface for desktop computers but I am absolutely loving Windows 8.1 on a Surface Pro. It makes the whole "Desktop is for work, Metro is for fun" dichotomy work better, especially with the 8.1 update.
Still not for everyone but it happens to fit the niche needs I've been talking about for years almost perfectly.

This is OK, but shouldn't we just use Microsoft Word for Metafilter? I mean, Matt could just copy and past all of MetaFilter into a Word document, and then email it to everyone. Then when we add a post or comment, we would just email it to everyone else with an apprioriate subject line, like "CHECK OUT MY GREAT POST ON PAGE 1,333,464,215!"
I don't know about your "computers" and such, but this seems a lot simpler than what you guys are doing at the moment. Plus we could use Clip Art! Seriously, this is a great idea.

The issue I see with the word migration is Email.
We should use Sharepoint Workspace 2013 with SkyDrive support. That way local edits with change tracking will be automatically shared to the cloud and Matt won't have to email metafilter to all the users.
When can we see a first pass at the word migration? We already fleshed out the idea so the rest is all nuts and bolts right?

Nah, should be doable if Sharepoint can import/export PDFs. We store all comments as individual PDFs and index them with a couple of spreadsheets on Matt's desktop at home. As long as we can keep that backend system going we should be set. My only suggestion: more Silverlight.

If you printed the PDFs out, then scanned them as 600dpi JPGs before indexing, you'd have both an automatic paper backup in case you need to retype it in someday, plus also a headstart on MetaFilter: The Coffeetable Book

I'm a little concerned by the fact that the PDFs and index spreadsheet are sitting on the file system, we can't guarantee availability. We should review the SLAs and implement a backup policy. Maybe we can leverage Azure.

Okay, there is definitely something going on. When browsing from IE's regular tile everything is fine. When I use the Metafilter tile the browser will randomly close when I open a link. I've been messing with it all evening and there is definitely something going on.

hoyland, a friend was having issues with a colleague insisting on using Pages - the problem was that the colleague was a public school teacher and couldn't afford anything else. Also the colleague seemed to be technically inept.

Another Windows 8.1 user here (I'm sure the third one will be along shortly). Maybe I'm being dense, but do I need to use the code samples on the linked site to set up a big live tile? Or is one already set up somewhere that I can download?

jeoc, I don't have a copy of Windows 8.1 to test with, but I think you just pin the site to your desktop. So you have IE set as your default browser, you bring up MetaFilter, and right-click anywhere. Then you choose to pin the site to the desktop, and there it is. That's my understanding of the process—no code required. The coding in the article was what we did on our end to make the Live Tile look a little nicer.

I'm on Windows 8.1 Enterprise build 9600.
The trick is you have to use Metro IE, the giant E icon, not desktop IE.
Load metafilter.com, click the star to open the favorites panel, click the thumbtack icon, confirm pin to start.
That is all there is to it.
You might have to scroll all the way to the right to see it.
