"Deleted Post" Script not working - just me? October 1, 2013 5:00 PM Subscribe
I've been happily using Plutor's "Deleted Posts" script in Chrome (v. 29.0.1547.76) on my Mac Airbook, but yesterday it stopped working. It was fine on Sunday, and I haven't updated Chrome or the script. I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the script, and confirming that I'm using the latest one (according to userscripts.org I am).
Is anyone else having this problem, or am I simply cursed?
Running *.76 version of Chrome on a Macbook Pro, deleted posts script version 1.0, still working fine for me.

Ok, it just .. suddenly started working. Like. I didn't do anything.
I'm going to declare my browser haunted, phone a priest, and then get on with my day.

Either there are no deleted posts on the first two pages of MeFi, or its stopped working for me too. I tried reinstalling it, but no change.

I've been seeing the same problem as DoubleLune, also on Safari, for some time now. It's as if the script was failing to fetch the content of deleted posts, or was then failing to display them, so they end up blank unless you hide them to just see the link to the post. I've been too lazy to dig in to the code and find the problem just yet though.

This is not really an either/or.

Did you use the in-app purchase to upgrade to the Deleted Post Premium Edition? If not, transfer your bitcoins into your PayPal account, and then call the secret cabal hotline. They should be able to supply an access code which will get you a 15-day trial, from which you can upgrade to the Gold version. In the hidden settings menu of the gold edition you'll find a link to download the Premium Edition. Fax your PayPal credentials to the number listed in the script source code, then wait for your activation token to be delivered via UPS. If that still doesn't work, try rebooting.

I just installed it now in Firefox, and it is working but the headings mess up the style a little (from memory, they have since they were introduced). There was a deleted post under the Silk Road post today, for those wondering if it is working for them.

Plutor doesn't use Userscripts anymore. You can find the newest version here.

Thank you for pointing this out. The userscripts.org version has been displaying the title of a non-deleted post, the deleted post and then the body of the non-deleted post ever since titles were introduced. It was one of life's little annoyances.
Now if I can just get rid of the cricket inside my bedroom wall...

So I'll be the big dummy and ask how to install it: when I click on the "install" link on the page that pb provides, all I get is a new tab with a whole lotta js code on it.

In Firefox on Linux (Windows and Mac should be similar):
Delete the old script if you already have it.
Copy the js code to the clipboard
Open Greasemonkey
Select "New User Script"
Select "Use Script from Clipboard" (which won't appear it there isn't a gm script in the clipboard.)
Go into manage user scripts and enable your new script.
I'm not sure how to do this in Chrome.

What worked in chrome was to install the tampermonkey and paste Plutors code into the edit window. I couldn't find a click to install or upload.

The latest version of deleted_posts appears to have been broken, despite re-enabling Greasemonkey, and re-installing the latest version from above link, and making sure that *.metafiler.com domain is included for processing by the script, after a Firefox suggested upgrade to Firefox 24.0, on a 9 year old WindowsXP 32 bit install, that otherwise, still works nicely.

Do you have secure browsing enabled in your MetaFilter preferences? I'm guessing the script hasn't been updated to work with the secure site feature.

Nope, and I've just rechecked that. I've never used secure browsing on this site, although I applaud y'all for trying to provide that service to those that need it. https:// ain't the problem, I'm guessing.

Interesting piece of anecdata: Although I'm experiencing the same issue as DoubleLune on Safari (with secure browsing turned off) where the content of deleted posts no longer shows up in the pink section marked "DELETE", it appears that this is only on the blue and the green. There are so few deleted MetaTalk posts that I hadn't realized until today that the script is still working there. There's probably a hint as to the source of the problem there, if someone looks into what's different between the subsites.
