Forgotten quotation about marriage, in a comment on the Green September 25, 2013 12:58 PM Subscribe
I read a quotation about marriage and the state of being married recently in an answer on AskMe, I loved it, and now I can't find it again! Awfully vague description inside.
The gist of it was, as I remember it, that marriage is not about the outward manifestations of being married. A legal marriage license, a shared residence, etc (there was a longer list in the quotation), do not constitute a marriage. Rather, it's about the conscious decision to share your existence and destiny with someone else, repeatedly. Or something like that.
I believe the comment was in response to either a semi-recent question about what constitutes a marriage (in the context of not being able to be legally married?), or a request for a quote for a non-traditional, non-religious wedding. I could be way off though, since I've been looking for weeks and still haven't found it (yes, I have looked through every wedding readings thread on the Green).
It was not a very poetic quote. Several sentences long (3 or 4?). It seemed like a quote from a psychology, nonfiction, or self-help type of book. It was definitely about marriage and not about love.
It's possible I read it on the Blue instead, but in that case I have no idea where to start looking for it.
Hope me, Mefi! I really want to (possibly) use the quote for my own wedding.

I didn't favorite it, unfortunately. janey47, I'm not that's it, but the substance is right.

Is it Jeannette Winterston? Or maybe an excerpt from Rilke, who comes up a few times, in case any of these other threads help.
