Listening to the trio describing and discussing Animal Crossing was amusing.
Mathowie: "...silly little games for kids".
Most of the kids I know who play games are into Call of Duty. Most of the adults, including academics, are playing Animal Crossing. The latter has a heck of a lot more depth; there's a big socio-economic system underneath.
Also, reading the gradually unfolding existential angst of Kapp'n is a strangely fulfilling pastime. He'd make a good MetaFilter mod.

It's hard to describe AC to someone that has never seen it, on the surface, it looks like a game made for children, but I agree most of the players I know are adults. I was just trying to relate how cartoon-y it appears and what programmers at Nintendo might have intended, and why they might have overlooked options in the current and past versions for customization.

Just a note that I currently have nearly the first hour of the podcast transcribed, since I got a little bit too into transcription today--I can transfer that into the Fanscribed when it goes up, or just format that part for the wiki directly. (I'm running out to the library right now but when I get back I can get back to transcribing, or I can leave it be if other people would like to take a turn. :) )

Thank you! I actually haven't gotten to doing the IPA on all the pronunciation discussions yet (I did do a few, though, especially the bag-vague merger one because I love it very much and it's been discussed enough times I can do it in my sleep)--the text editor I was using wasn't taking Unicode and I started being like, eh, I'll do those later, and then when I was splitting the existing transcript into 150+ pieces quickly it seemed better to sleep on it.
(Also, that was one I was going to recheck how to properly do the ending, because I don't think the schwa (ə) is even really there in jessamyn's pronunciation or mathowie's imitation of it, so [ˈhoʊtn]?, assuming that that t is not actually an ɾ which I believe it is not in this particular instance, it sounds reasonably distinctly t-ish? Also I am not always the best with figuring out and properly indicating stress patterns. IANALinguist, IANYLinguist, I just think language is beautiful and I enjoy trying to render broad transcriptions of the pronunciation discussions but I would be thrilled if anyone ever wants to improve them!)

I've been in a weird sort of not-feeling-it place with lower-case-m music lately, and that unfortunately has had a negative impact on my time spent proactively looking at Music. Which is nobody's fault but mine, for the portion of it that really makes sense to talk about fault about, but it is a bummer and I feel like a neglectful parent because of that. And I get into a sort of stupid avoidance pattern with stuff when I'm bummed or blocked, which doesn't help anything.
I'm trying to deal with it and sort of bootstrap my ass back in to both making and paying attention to little-m and big-M music, respectively, because I don't like it and I think it sucks that my weird broodiness on that creative front can have a negative knock-on effect on what's in better circumstances one of my favorite part of the sites and by extension on the people who particularly like to hang out there.
Basically, I hear you. I don't know how much it's a love-from-the-mods thing in general as an attention-from-me-specifically thing at the moment, since it's always sort of been my baby and my role as liaison, but I hope to be more consistent about in in the future.

My problem is that I travel a lot and all I listen to is the radio. Where I am for (most of) the summer, I've been listening to the huge tarball of old MeFi Music and should do a better job noting what I've liked recently even if the music isn't recent. I do go to old Music threads and leave notes for people but I could do it on the podcast also. I'd be totally open to a Music correspondent too but honestly it's just something we should Handle.

Good point, we should probably do a better job at introducing ourselves.
Good idea! I say we all start by memorizing 922257033c4a0f3cecdbd819a46d626999d1af4a's user name!

it's easy. 9, because why not?
222 is a highway in NE PA that used to be a US route but is now a state route.
570 is the area code that used to be parts of 717.
33 is a highway in NE PA.
c4 goes boom.
That's as far as I have in memory.

Every time I think it's Matt talking, the other guy speaks up and Jess says something like 'Matt aren't you paying attention' and then I spend the next 5 minutes wondering who was who. I think it's mostly because to me they both sound alike and I can't pick up any slight accent or anything. of course I only listen once a month so there's that.
Also don't we have rules on doxxing users?

I didn't think I was, I thought I was making a joke. However, I wouldn't object to that that "unix command line" comment being deleted.

You can tell who Matt is because he's panned slightly to the right and is the one who just stops in the middle of the podcast to watch a like four minute video because, c'mon, THIS IS LIVE PRERECORDED RADIO DUDE.

The aforementioned Librarybox kickstarter, by MeFite Griffey, has just finished, with pretty spectacular results. Congratulations, Jason!
