Did I speculate that it was named after the cigar-chomping sergeant from Aliens? Because I'm standing by that theory even though that guy's name is actually Apone because man he was great.

There was so much to love about this month on MeFi, thanks for highlighting the nuggets that I missed.
Also, that bike fraud thread. Just WOW.

A day in MeTalk is like a day on the farm: Every meal's a banquet. Every paycheck a fortune! Every formation's a parade! I love MeTalk!

Thanks so much for reminding me about Flula. Here he is with Ben Kingsley, who is so Ben Kingsley.

I am the mefite who, along with others, sent rmd1023 the horseshoe-shaped floral arrangement. We literally called the florist and asked for the ugliest thing possible. It was all 1970's colors, orange and gold, with a pistachio-green ribbon and "BEST WISHES ON YOUR NEUTERING" in gold glitter on it, and it stood about four and a half feet high. Words honestly can't describe it. We were 99.99% sure she would love it, but it was still a queasy couple of hours between the ordering and the delivering.
The same group of friends and I sent another arrangement a decade ago to a good friend who was had undergone MTF gender surgery, all full of orchids and and anthuriums, with a hot pink bow and a card that read "PENIS-FREE IN 2003!" So, you know, there's that. Good intentions, bad taste. (She also loved it, it was exactly the right thing. I do not accept responsibility for the shattering of any friendships if you do the same thing.)

That would never happen. Not until I lose in battle. I do shave my entire body, though. Otherwise the oil just matts the hair down.

I think I still have the green "BEST WISHES ON YOUR NEUTERING" banner from the arrangement somewhere. If not, I certainly kept it for years.

Maybe you have to work for a florist to be giggling at this.

wee! sidebar mention and podcast mention! thanks guys! Families get to stay for free, and we mefites were the do-gooders cooking dinners for them on this occasion. The houses are run fully by volunteers, so the cleaning staff, and desk staff and everybody are volunteers.
I really like doing this, it's like a potluck meetup with food for people who could use a homecooked meal while they're worried about their sick kids.
And I've dealt with all the refrigerated unexpected polish sausage at this point with the help of this, a sausage party, and memorial day camping. Now I just have to get through a freezer full of polish sausage.

I asked the mods to delete the link to my pic upthread, on the off chance anyone's wondering. I just started feeling weird and uncomfortable about it, even though I love you all and stuff. This is why I don't do Facebook etc -- YOU SEE MY PHOTO YOU STEAL MY SOUL or something.
Also, thanks for the kind words about waeguk.in. I'm enjoying just doing the tumbleresque finding of neat niche koreacontent and posting it, rather than feeling like I have to crank out ESSAYS OF IMPORT.

Maybe Jess? We were talking after the fact about some greater than usual mic level variance on her track this time which could have had something to do with her mic being too close and triggering some sort of auto-ducking thing in the sound levels, so that'd tie in well with audible breathing sounds. I haven't gone back to really look, though.

I'm reading my kids the book Racing in the Rain (the edited-for-young-people edition) and it's about a dog and is written from the dog's perspective, but there was some foreshadowing at the beginning and I suspect some mortal coil shuffling may be how the book ends. Maybe it's like Addie's chapter in As I Lay Dying, or Joe Gillis in Sunset Boulevard. But the other trope that gets far too little attention is killing off the mom, which has already happened in this book, and seems to happen a lot. That's what I want next. Does the Mom Live? Disney, in particular, was an asshole to moms, and I'd like to find more mom-positive children's lit/film.

And we finished the book tonight, and yeah, the dog died. Of course the kids were fine, but I had a hard time with the final chapter, what with all my snot-bubble sobbing.
