Metafilter in the Scientific Literature May 2, 2013 3:52 PM Subscribe
I was just reading this PLOS Biology paper about social media for scientists where I noticed that Metafilter was mentioned as an example of a "Linking Community". Nice work on making it into one of the top biology journals!
It was a misprint. It was supposed to say "blinking community."

Oh, crap! I thought we were a "Lion King" community!

It was actually supposed to be "Liu Kang community", a nod to the site's origins in 1994 as Matt's personal web museum for the character at the heart and soul of the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Unfortunately, the immovable object of poor backup practices by Matt and then-partner-in-krime Jason "Kitanaboy" Kottke eventually collided with the unstoppable force of a Super Big Gulp of Mt. Dew and the hard drive the site lived on got fried beyond repair. And thanks to the porous-at-best web indexing/archiving of the time, we don't even have a partial cache for MortalFilter.

Nice to see the publicist doing their job.
What do you guys think the best soup is, I can't decide if it's spit pea, onion, or potato leek. I'm eating some spit pea right now, but I wish I had some onion and potato leek. Someone should do that, like how they have a flight of beer, I want a flight of soup.

You are right,I never considered cereal.
When I was in college I used to make cafe bustelo in a bialetti moka pot and eat a bowl of peanut butter captain crunch every morning. One day I only had enough for one or the other, so in a flash of inspiration I had cereal with cafe bustelo in it. Best soup I ever had.

I just made two batches of cookies. Which do you guys like better, the ones with the cheapo chips and the fancy cocoa spice blend or the ones with the fancy chocolate bar and good chips and the normal cocoa?

While we're pondering food conundrums, here's one for you; if you are eating bread and dip, is it better to run out of bread first, or out of dip first? Does your opinion change if the bread is toasted?

Mrs. French's cat is missing. The signs are posted all over town. "Have you seen Honey?" We've all seen the posters, but nobody has seen Honey the cat...
