There's Metafilter love in Boston! April 18, 2013 7:52 AM Subscribe
Universal Hub is a great place to get your Boston news, especially when all the mainstream media outlets keep reporting false rumors every two seconds. Today, they credited us with the story about the pissant in West Virginia.
They have a sense of humor that is right up our alley; read some of the headlines, and you'll get the idea. For example, when we had the two "only once in 50 years" rainstorms within a week of each other a few years ago, they changed the title to "Universal Glub".

For folks in the provinces, one of Boston's nicknames from an earlier century was "the Hub of the Universe". Partly sarcasm I expect, but the early geography of Boston was somewhat like a spoked wheel.

Not to mention their French Toast warning system for severe storms.
I moved to Boston less than a year ago and owe Universal Hub a lot of credit for anything I ever know about what's going on in the city basically.

I have to admit, after Monday's events, I was kind of wondering where the French Toast warning system had been set, but I thought it had been part of the now dead Bostonist site. Good to know it's Universal Hub.

From Cartalk.com:
"The geographical center of Boston is in Roxbury. Due north of the center we find the South End. This is not to be confused with South Boston, which lies directly east from the South End. North of the South End is East Boston and southwest of East Boston is the North End. Back Bay was filled in years ago.
"Southie is South Boston. The South End is the South End. Eastie is East Boston. The North End is east of the West End. The West End and Scollay Square are no more—a guy named Rappaport got rid of them one night."

I'm curious why this "via metafilter" especially noteworthy when there have dozens in the past 24 hours? Look everyone, the North-East has once again proven itself superior to pissant Appalachia. It's MetaFilter-related!

I think it's because pointing out another good local source for Boston news that people may have overlooked or not known about is a decent community service.

Pissant Appalachia and a pissant in Appalachia are two very different sentiments.

UHub is how I get all my local news. It's a great site. While the network news is all atwitter about Whitey Bulger's trial or whatever else and pontificating about this and that, UHub, tells us about potholes and the latest status of the ducklings' latest spring fashion.
Man, I love this city.

Thank you. I like to think that W.Va is at least as represented by Katelyn Campbell as by George Aulenbacher in that story.

I removed that comment. Please don't bring shitty comments over from other sites just to make a point. Linking is just fine.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed that the auto-refresh "click for new comments" thing doesn't do anything with deleted comments - they stay there until the next full page refresh.

pissant Appalachia.
I've known some really nice people from Appalachia. Please don't insult them.

benito, I think 0 was complaining of anti-Southern bigotry that often appears in the Northeast. The sentence was ironic.

Yeah, I was trying to out-irony irony and it didn't work. But 0 and I cleared it up (I hope) over me-mail.

Wait, what. We had a thread on the West Virginia high school and I missed it!! That's my alma mater. Off to the thread - I have much to say.

Yes, benito, clearly understood my concerns and expressed them ~1000 times better in the memail than I did in thread. (Not that I set the bar high enough to make that difficult.) His compassionate response actually made me feel a lot better yesterday, so thank you, benito.
I apologize to the community for posting while cranky and to Melismata for the derail.
