A callout... for AWESOMENESS! March 8, 2013 7:06 PM Subscribe
I've gotten a lot of useful answers to my AskMe questions, but this question seemed to be a stumper. Until...
After a few days, barnone came through with lots of suggestions, but none were quite what I needed for the purpose, though still cool and useful for other purposes.
And then... chairface wrote an app to do what I needed.
Coolest AskMe answer I ever got! I love MetaFilter!

I am having a hard time getting a visual of what someone named chairface might look like out of my mind.
That is the ultimate in answering an askme. No known solution? Build one yourself and present it!

If that link had led anywhere else... well, saying you'd be dead to me seems a bit much... but still maybe accurate.

I suspect chairface would look friendly, and informational. Yep, friendly and informational.

That is helpful. Chairface, you really must write longer descriptions of your apps.

I ask you, does chairface look like someone with an abundance of time for writing mere descriptions?

Faciam. So close to facism, but endlessly more pleasant.

Mick Napier has been alerted. Assuming he's not already a Metafilter member, if he has anything to say, I'll let you know. :D

Um, it occurs to me that I might actually want to share how I've used the app, then. Saturday was my first experiment, and I set it up to do 30 second intervals for 5 minutes, so 10 characters. I started with a stock character of mine, and then did characters that were each somehow "opposite" the previous one - an idea picked up from my teacher/director at La Ronde rehearsal last Tuesday.
Going forward, I'll probably start with a random character from Storymatic and continue with the opposite idea. I think I'll try gradually longer intervals, and then work my way up to random intervals. I could see the value immediately on Saturday; I started with some pretty stock ideas but quickly had to get out of my head and was throwing different people out there.
I could have done this with an egg timer, but my fear of talking out loud in an empty apartment* took creative routes - "Oh, there's no iPhone app to beep at you at random intervals? Guess I can't do this, then." Luckily, I'm persistent. Plus, the beep at the end of an interval is very motivating.
* Why is it I have few nerves getting on stage to do improv in front of people, but doing solo work in an empty apartment gives me the willies? Sigh.

I'm going to avoid derailing this by sending you a private message, but wanted to say I only know Mick in passing and he's one of the kindest people I've ever met.
