Garkov posted on Cheezburger dot com: Garfield comics randomly generated by a spambot algorithm
Hey, I was excited! Didn't notice that it was attributed. Still, weird to get to very different parts of my end of work internet experience mixed up.

Yeah, not scraping, just sort of screenshotting and showing off. The fact is that Garkov doesn't actually have a working archive, so screenshotting's about all you can do really.
Been sort of crazy seeing it get a bunch of traffic all day long after being pretty quiet in general. But whee!

Kittens are like string... every yo-yo wants one. [CRASH] And I'm Frank Sinatra.
This is bizarre in such a precise and perfect way that even know I know it's Markov'd I keep trying to figure out the joke.

Also, I am sad without the Markov generator here. It seems to have been killed.

How come not all the balloons are filled?
It's an artifact of my hacky heuristics for the markov code that generates the strips. The text generation loops makes several efforts to randomly generate a phrase that will fit in the physical confines of a balloon, but for the smaller ones that's a taller order and so it's possible it'll try ten times, fail every time, and just say fuuuuuuck it and move on.
A more thoroughly featured markov generator might specifically build in a feature to prioritize minimum sentence lengths in choosing its random seeds for each phrase, but my code didn't go that far because it was Hard and this was Good Enough, basically.
Yes please can the markov filter come back?
I would really really like to bring it back some time and hope to do so.

Everyone's always trying to control the z's. Once you spend a bit of time in an alternative culture, you'll find you won't need so much control. You'll have a much more meta understanding of the z's.

I love this thing. I'm also pretty stoked that the Garfiled Randomizer still works after all these years.

I rediscover Garkov once in a while and spend an hour or so obsessively reloading it. Previously, On The X-Files and The Big Markovsky (p.s. cortex fix your link here) are both great and more technically impressive, but there's something really pure about Garkov.

See, the phrase 'scraping content' implies posting unoriginal content without attribution. That Jeezburgher blog both links back to joshmillard.com and also doesn't wipe out the author tag on each comic.
So anyway, the Internet works as intended! Yay!
