In a perfect world, out here every day. It's pretty rare I get out that far though. Usually I just climb the fire escapes for a thrill. =\

Not sure I understand the premise unless you want a picture of my bed?

I go down to Clover Point

Funny story about puppies and airplanes...

For those of you who don't travel with pets, let me tell you: traveling with pets is expensive. Southwest has the cheapest pet travel fees, and they charge $75 per leg for your pet to fly with you in a bag under the seat in front of you. (I think United has the most expensive, with $175/leg.)

Anyway, I was explaining this to my mom, who responded with shock and outrage at the exorbitant fees. "I know," I said, "but there's just no way to pay less if I want to fly with my dog."

And my mom helpfully responded by saying, "how does Truman feel about becoming an amputee?"

Because she thought the "per leg" charge was per leg of the dog, not per leg of the flight...

Hawk Hill, counting migrating raptors, is my best non-work spot.

That and hanging out at home, while under supervision of one or more cats.

phunniemee, I thought the same thing, and wondered if birds got charged extra because of the wings.

If it wasn't like 20 degrees out I'd be up on my roof looking out at the harbor. Can't wait for summer!

The base component of my relaxation is still illegal in most places. Currently the remaining factors can generally be filed under three categories: Star Trek, Ace Attorney, and Other.

My relaxation typically involves salt water and palm trees.

Here's my living room, a lovely place to hang out, though I really need to paint it a more interesting colour. Here's that same room, but with robots!. This is a typical view when I'm lying in bed reading metafilter on my netbook.

you want a picture of my bed?

Yeah in the wintertime nights if I'm not actively cooking/baking something, or doing internet work I am most likely in bed reading or sleeping or doing non-work internetty stuff. I also birdwatch (from the window and out in the field), do stuff with my neighbors and friends or go walking on the beach when I'm in MA.

Same place, my messy basement dungeon.
But when I turn my chair around...* MAGICAL HARP SOUND *...TA-DAA! Just as messy behind me, where the MAGIC happens, when everyone's asleep and I remember to turn off the furnace.
Really the rest of our house is quite bright and lovely. It's just me that's condemned to the basement with all of my loud noisemaking.
And in the summer I have weeks on end of this kind of thing with my awesome family, in Muskoka.

In ascending order of how much free time I have (and therefore how far I can travel) I like to go to this levee at the Industrial Canal behind the army base, to this bridge in the Barataria Preserve, or this bayou out in Manchac between Lake Ponchartrain and Lake Maurepas (canoe required for the last one).

Those are all day trips, of course. If I have a lot of time, I go to Organ Pipe National Monument or White Sands National Monument.

Stayed up all night one time to take a little bit of video as the sun came up on Mt. Rainier.

Shot a lot of footage for the Seattle band Klover Jane that ended up in that video.

Ran a camera for a Queensryche show last fall and am now working with the director on editing/finishing the videos. (Sorry, nothing has been published yet!)

That's what I call fun.

For exciting, hard to beat falling out of the sky.

I like to take strolls through the big cemeteries that are just a short walk from my house, like this one and this one. I love hanging in Ueno Park, too, which is also close to where I live.

Garage workshop. I bought that table saw based on an Ask I posted awhile back. Most of the things in the picture are related to beekeeping, so here's one shot of the bee yard. It's not much of a bee yard, with only 1 colony. BUT:

It's about to expand - we're moving out into the county and onto some acreage in a month or so. I can hardly wait!

I explore my surroundings, seduce local fauna, and enjoy the views while mountain biking. The last two years, I've spoiled myself further with a subscription to the Monaco-Monte Carlo opera. (It's really reasonable, since the Monegasque royalty fund much of it.)

Otherwise? This.

Mariela's Wine Bar
71 Westchester Avenue
Pound Ridge, NY

I can be found there most Thursday and Friday evenings. It's literally around the corner from my house (which adds to the appeal).

I am sad to realize I don't have a picture of my second home on my flickr. I'll have to remedy that tomorrow when I go there.

You do not want to see my living room. It looks like a combination bookshop and yarn store exploded in here.

If in Iowa, then hanging out either in the Saints Rest coffee place, or the Candyland ice cream parlor, in Grinnell.

If in England, then walking on the Malvern Hills, or looking for books - especially in Hay-on-Wye, which is crack cocaine central for people addicted to books.

If in Scandinavia then, yeah, the sea or eating local food. Or trying to figure out the signs in elevators.

NEVER TAKE A WHEELY-BIN ON A SCANDINAVIAN ELEVATOR.
posted by davidjmcgee at 8:37 PM on February 2, 2013 [3 favorites]

My spouse translated the scary sign for me as: You must bring the trash can all the way into the elevator, because if even the slightest bit is over the edge, when the elevator goes down it could get stuck and CRUSH YOU DEAD.

Which really IS terrifying! Especially when you think it must have happened often enough that they felt the need to post a WARNING sign. Wow.

The picture, incidentally, also shows my dog's favorite hangout: human crotches.

No good pictures of my haunts on hand, and I can't go get any just now as it's winter and most of these places are only active in spring and summer. But I have some pictures other people took --

I don't know which head in this picture is mine, but I'm in there somewhere. (I do know that I'm not the paddleboard guy. But I can say that the paddleboard guy is gloriously nuts in the best way.) This is our beach, though, and I might also be somewhere in this picture of the group suiting up.

I am also in amazing crazy love with this place (wiki link here) and would absolutely live out here if the city zoned for it (it's not going to). I have spent an afternoon dreaming in the shade under this tree, biked past this view, wondered at what life was like living in this house or this house, took a ranger guided tour of this monument, played this minigolf course and others like it, played a gloriously silly game that was a combination of tag and capture the flag with nerf swords on this field, watched a vintage baseball game between these teams, discovered this WPA mural in a building while I was spending a night camping in this patch of grass (after paddling over from Brooklyn with a flotilla of kayakers and landing at this beach), held one of these chickens, had curry goat and ice cream from these food trucks, and spent one afternoon in one of these hammocks looking out over the Statue of Liberty while reading E.B. White's "Here Is New York."
