It's time for another collection of Metafilter Music! January 21, 2013 8:43 PM Subscribe
There is so much music here. Here's the annual torrent of all the songs from Metafilter Music, gathering everything from 2012. There were 558 songs, taking up 3.1 gigabytes. Massive, massive props to all the musicians who shared their music! Check it out, and remember, the song threads never close, so if you find a song you love, please drop by and let the artists know!
Also, my thanks to the people who are helping to get the files around the world quickly. This would go much more slowly without them. With them, there are even now seeds available for the first 5000 songs, 2010 Q4, and 2011 - see the original torrent thread, which is still open.
Incidental plug: this Thursday marks the second anniversary of Start to Finish, my song-a-day podcast that draws from Metafilter Music - over 500 quality songs and counting! It leans toward indie and electronic music.

Wow, that's downloading faster than expected. I'll be seeding this for a few weeks.

Great stuff, thanks Pronoiac.

I still can't get used to this. You'll get exchanges like:
5 years later and I still love this song.

Seeding from a pretty fast seedbox. Perhaps the first legal thing I have done from it.

we're waiting for you now
to drop on by, and say "this rocks!"
or ask one of us "how?
how do you get that kick drum sounding like a cannon blast?"
or "how the hell d'ya play that bari sax so goddam FAST?"
or "hey, it's cool, but I'd prefer a slightly brighter mix"
or "hey, I wish you'd tell me all your cool recording tricks!"
or even "hmm, you know, this kinda thing just ain't my bag,
I'd much prefer a ukulele dubstep polka rag"
or "man I can't believe how fucking brilliant your songs are!"
or "this is what I'd like to hear while driving in my car"
or "hey, you got a day job? like, something to fall back on?"
or "just what software did you use to make this groovy track on?"
or "this song sounded better on my Altecs than my Bose"
but anyway, stop by today
cause song threads never close

Pronoiac, Thanks for your pretty tireless efforts to shine a light on the dark murky back alleyway that is Music. Also, apologies in advance for my outsize contributions to the massive data load. Maybe some day, we'll learn to craft songs that don't "kick in at the 9-minute mark."

Why is the torrent file zipped? It's a minor nit, but I have to download the file, unzip and then start my torrent client, whereas with just the torrent, it's all in one go.

922257, they're zipped for boring technical reasons, involving my host's mime types, and this was the obvious workaround. It only takes an extra couple of double-clicks in my browsers - one to open the zip file, and then one to open the torrent.

No problem! I'm relieved that it wasn't too serious - it bothered me, but I'd thought it was completely out of my hands, and using zip was much simpler to download than the alternative.
Aaand there's good news - I just found a workaround. Try it out!
