MetaFilter Wiki's Tenth Anniversary November 9, 2012 5:04 AM Subscribe
Ten years ago today adrianhon, MetaFilter Wiki's generous host, announced the creation of MeFi Wiki. It's been a valuable addition to the community since its birth. Thanks Adrian!
We probably need our very own TV Tropes page at this point.

The wiki is great, I particularly like the way it says Don't Panic on the first page, in case you were feeling like panicking.

Hey, I met adrianhon! He helped us hand reddit's butts to them at trivia in London last year! I had no idea he was the MeFi Wiki guy, otherwise I would have gotten his autograph.

Whoa! There I was just reading an election thread for the 500th time, idly clicked on MeTa and my first thought was, "Dammit, something's wrong with the wiki?" Seriously, the credit should go to people like RichardP and Pronoiac who have worked so hard to keep the place shipshape and spam-free. I just set it up and wrote a bunch of article stubs in a fit of mad enthusiasm. Those guys are even keener motherfuckers.
Anyways, Mefi is always my go-to example of an online community that gets it right. Sure, there are places with more people or more money, place with more press and a professional white background, but none that will last as long as this place, thanks to the mods and everyone here.
Tonight, more than 10 years after a former server won the right to become a wiki, the past of perfecting our union moves forward. It moves forward because of you. It moves forward because you reaffirmed the spirit that has triumphed over trolls and spammers, the spirit that has lifted this wiki from the depths of despair to the great heights of hope, the belief that while each one of us will pursue our own individual dreams, we are a Mefi family, and we rise or fall together as one wiki and as one website.
Mefi, I believe we can build on the progress we've made and continue to fight for new pages and new podcast transcripts and new injokes and new howtos for the newbies. I believe we can keep the promise of our founding, the idea that if you're willing to make the edits, it doesn't matter what your username is or where you post from or how you pronounce Mefi.
It doesn't matter whether you're Mac or PC or Android or Linux or user #1 or #100,000, Team Cortex or Team Jessamyn, crouch or don't crouch. You can make it here in Mefi if you're willing to try. We're not as cynical as the Redditors are. We are greater than the sum of our individual favorite counts and we remain more than a collection of green subsites and blue subsites. We are, and forever will be, the United Sites of Metafilter.
And together, with your help and mathowie's grace, we will continue our journey forward and remind the internet just why it is that we read and post on the greatest website on earth. Thank you, Metafilter!

(Adrian is a gentleman and a scholar. I adore him for the Zombie app. I am now a runner, and regularly participate in races. I'm pretty slow... but I'd never run in my life before. And the fact that he made the wiki, proves that he is my pinup boy for ever.
Love this man. He saved my life.)
