opt into notification for IRL meetups November 4, 2012 5:02 PM Subscribe
Feature request: opt-in email or MeMail when a meetup in your city is proposed.
I visit MeFi daily but have recently missed a discussion on a meetup in my city.
Can we have an opt-in feature where we list our city/town/state/country and can be emailed or memailed when a proposal for a meetup hits the IRL site?

ooh! I hadn't. I don't normally want to post specifics of my location to the public web...

Your location appears to already be set in your profile, you shouldn't need to change anything there.

Ok, I see this feature keeps my privacy pretty well-respected.

This might be something we could use Twilio for (it's a telephony API company). We could enable SMS optionally when something is first set up and the night before/morning of the event, so you get a more prominent alert on your phone.

mathowie: sounds quite cool. Twilio is primarily US-based but they are expanding rapidly globally.

This could also be done with IFTTT. For example, I get a text every time there is a GitHub drinkup in SF. Someone just needs to make a recipe for their city (and this wont require including a location in ones mefi profile).

Misread that as Twilio being a "telepathy API company" which *would* make it pretty good for alerting folks to this sort of thing without having to broadcast it on the internet.

One for all of Oregon. There are ical links for every region actually. See here for Portland's.
Also the MyIrl page lets you get an ical/rss feed for event's you've RSVPed to as well.

I can confirm that having just set my IRL to Austin, I got a memail about an event in Austin a day or two later. I didn't have to opt in to anything. It was wonderful and unexpected!
