Damn! Congratulations flf! I suggest you take the month of October off and just post SLYTs of astroturfy viral ads for mediocre pop.

It's just the build up of a long con. Post 501 will be a self-link. But it will be worth it.

Thanks for the great posts - I hope your next one is about Levi jeans or tax exempt non profits.
And the one after that about the Louisville-area telephone system.
I have no idea what you should do after that.
(It would take a long time for me to get tired of that joke, but I am not the standard by which you would want to judge those things.)

It would've been super cool if, right after clicking "Submit Post", he'd disabled his account. And just walked away.
And we never heard from him again.
(But I'm glad he didn't.)

flf, griphus? filthy light theif should be flt. Unless you're using the same acronym system as Calvin's G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS).
That said, flt's the second coolest MeFite I have ever met IRL (only because I've also met scody). I felt mixed emotions when he recently moved to Albuquerque because that severely reduced the chances of me meeting him IRL again, but it allowed me to reclaim the title of "Most Notable MeFite in San Luis Obispo" that he took the first time he posted. (Also, I was worried he'd take a wrong turn between Pismo Beach and Albuquerque, but that's just the Looney Tuney in me)

'I gave up counting them. I mean, I had to. It was just so much, so fast. I tried weighing them. I figured one link of any website weighs a gram. There are 454 grams to a pound, but... there's a variety of websites. So....'
'How much is this?'
'I have no earthly idea. I truly don't. I just stack them up, keep them dry, spray them for silverfish. There are more links here than what we could read in ten lifetimes.'

If I quit my job, stopped going outside, sleeping and bathing, ate pizza at my desk and did nothing but make MetaFilter posts, I could never churn out the sheer number of links in 10 years. And they're not only incredibly numerous, which is in itself a feat yes, but all the ones I've read have been truly fantastic posts. I'd still celebrate his oeuvre regardless of quantity, because flt churns out quality stuff.
Thanks for your tireless commitment to excellence, sir.

shakespeherian, that's a timely quote, because I happened to be perusing filthylightthief's profile page recently, and I found some...shall we say, questionable content. And now all my alarm bells are going off.
Consider: As we know, filthylightthief lives in New Mexico, where he describes himself as being "now in between things". Pretty convenient turn of phrase, could mean anything. Even something illicit. Like maybe...making meth?
You know who else lives in New Mexico? Walter White, supposedly "Heisenberg", the master criminal.
What is this Heisenberg known for? Crystal meth. But not just any meth, oh no!
His crystal meth is of such exceptional quality--99.6% pure--it is apparent he must Know Things others do not.
Filthylightthief is a self-described "infoholic" who posts many, many links on things I know nothing about!
Heisenberg is taking in serious cash from the black market sale of his product.
What was filthylightthief's very first Metafilter comment about? Black market money exchanges.
Bammo. It all fits together. Wake up, sheeple!
filthylightthief is Heisenberg!
Admit it--you've never actually seen FLT and Walter White together, have you?
Someone go check FLT's bathroom for Walt Whitman poems! I'll wait here.
__
Seriously, flt, congratulations on 500 posts, every last one of them full of win. Your product is better than 99.6% pure!

Aw, thanks!
I was trying to think of a "stunty" 500th post, and got stuck on this song. And then I realized the band/brothers had a total of 9 albums, even releasing an album earlier this year. And I kept on reading, listening, and watching. And writing.
Stunt post fail, I think.

And being a stay-at-home dad really hampers my ... medicine ... making. He's only crawling, but the little blighter is all friggin' hands some times. Tipping over equipment one moment, tugging cords the next. I try to keep him in his baby cage, he screams bloody murder, and that really gets the neighbors interested when they can overlook the eternally closed windows. But as long as he's free to roam, he's giggling and happy, so I can't complain.

heyho: If only I could remember every single thing I'd hoped to commit to long-term memory; but nooo
I'll be honest, I have, on occasion, re-read my posts and said "damn, I did write that. That was interesting." I've also forgotten comments I've written, and found myself agreeing with a particularly insightful point or two, only to see my handle at the end. "Oh, I guess I did write that. Well, I had to, because that's my nick there. Hmm, and it was only a year ago? Damn."

As for the link count ... would you count the links for a post that was too damned long and ended up spilling into two additional comments? JHarris' High Weirdness by Mail was longer and didn't appear to break anything, but that might be because I had more links per overall text. High weirdness, indeed.

I think it's actually just that we restructured the db a little bit in the interim to get away from what had previously been a lower effective limit on text.
