The website so nice they headed it twice...er, thrice and a half. September 12, 2012 7:50 AM Subscribe
Every once in a while, while reading MeFi on my phone, the heading will freak out. Like this.
It does that on the blue and the profile pages, but does this on all the subsites.
I don't think I do anything special when it happens, it'll stay for a little while (it stays even if I shut down and restart safari), and then it'll go away again seemingly for no reason. For instance, it was doing it last night for a while when I took the screen shots, but right now it's fine.
Just me? Or something you guys should know about?

Weird! Might be a failure to properly load/parse the CSS styling for the header image (that looks like it's set to 'background-repeat:repeat-x' for some reason) though I'm not sure how exactly that'd manifest itself. Possibly a Safari issue? I've never seen it on my phone, in any case, and I don't know that we've had any other reports.
As a cosmetic issue it's weird but nothing to worry about.

amro, no, but if I were running a website that was loved, used, and read by roughly a kajillionthousand (exact number of active users; I counted), I would want to know when there was any problem with it, even aesthetic.
There have been bug report MeTas for more trivial things than this, I assure you.

A bug is a bug. And sometimes the most innocent thing turns out to be a minor symptom of a much worse problem. I've learned to follow up those little bugs that make you say "huh, that's weird".

Yeah, no problem on the bug report. That is unusual, I haven't seen it before or heard about it. I agree with cortex—sounds like a style isn't loading. Maybe it's a network issue. Do you notice it more on your home wifi than out and about on 3G?

In re it being a network issue -- I notice that phunniemee is on Verizon, so I'll just say that I've never seen this happen on AT&T.
(Also that "att" autocorrects to "AT&T", but "phunniemee" autocorrects to "phonemes".)

Hmm...I think it happens more often when I'm on 3G than when I'm using wifi at home/work. Last night's was definitely on 3G.

Pretty cute, really, though I'd like to see what having each repeat be half the size of the previous one would be like.

Does reloading the page fix it? Or does it stay like that with each click?
I'm not sure there's much we can do to fix it on this end. If it's really irritating you could switch to the plain theme. There's no image at the top.

Well, if Zeno has taught me anything, it'd look like a page that never finished loading.

That reminds me - Zeno called and said he was coming over for dinner. Which I find a little inconsistent.

That is kind of the problem, no one knows what Zeno actually means because no one has ever finished reading the argument.

Yes, I had this problem since yesterday - the style was not loading at all - and on a PC, with XP and Firefox. Today I turned off Ghostery and Adblock plus and it loaded, and now I turned Ghostery on and its loaded. I have not yet risked turning adblock plus off.
I also turned off the AVG firefox update (which was an automated change to blocking with the new version update) when I realized that "Something" was stripping style sheets out from sites using Cloudfront - hootsuite, bit.ly and Metafilter.
Something changed somewhere - either at the tracker blocking end or the cloudfront end and poof went the weasel!
Y'all are looking thankfully blue adn grey adn yellow again though.

Reloads, IIRC did not fix it.
Changing the network did.
Weird.

Okay since this thread is already referencing Mario, and since we were talking about whether this glitch is trivially aesthetic or not, I must poiint out this weird, potentially seizure-inducing bug I found on Nintendo's website. I reported it to them and haven't heard back, and submitted it to Kotaku and never got a reply.
As I pointed out in the video description, the slideshow was flying by so fast that the screencasting software I was using couldn't capture it. I'm a migraine sufferer and just a few seconds of seeing the page gave me a mild headache. I would hate for an epilepsy sufferer to happen across this bug. (Yes, I know that perhaps epileptics are less likely to play video games in the first place and thus might not be interested in Nintendo's website, but there's always blind links and first-time seizure sufferers.)
The bug is currently fixed, although I have no idea whether it was via the intervention of someone who runs the site, or the release of Firefox 15.0.1, or the intervention of the great video game deity in the sky.
So I thank the mods here for responding to "trivial" website issues when a giant corporation may or may not have ignored a possibly dangerous website bug.
