I added Artw the other day to my contacts when I realized that many of my delighted squeals of OOH at a FPP were generated from his sterling contributions. That way I will see them in my side panel for maximum convenience!

Well yeah, but Dredd came out yesterday and I was relying on ArtW to find some way to start a discussion on MeFi, if not another full Dredd thread, but he hasn't because he sold out his birthright and moved to the US and its not out there yet. Now all of us loyal subjects of her majesty have seen his glorious brutality, big screen and 3D and you haven't! Eat it ArtW, you grexnix.

Also, thanks for the posts, keep it up.

Maybe so, but Egg Shen has racked up one hell of a résumé in a short period of time. I dunno if he's the rebirth of an old user in a new guise, but his contributions have uncannily fit the spirit of the place right out of the gate.

That said, I do hold out hope that one day, he might find just a little bit of love in his heart for the series finale of Battlestar Galactica (setting all continuity issues aside).

NO DON'T SAY THAT WORD IN AN ARTW THREAD
posted by entropicamericana at 7:48 AM on September 10, 2012

Look, three thousand years pass. The narrative thread from the reader's perspective is necessarily broken (which is in ironic contrast to Leto II's specific priorities vis-a-vis the Golden Path). You need to give the God Emperor some space and treat it as the start of a companion trilogy, not as a fourth book in a tight group.

Because it's a mystery and a reflection on the transformation of humanity and of Leto II. And read like that—where you've signed up for some unraveling, some contemplation, some picking apart of what exactly has changed in three millenia, what exactly Leto II is up to with all this crazy power and vision and so on—it's really, seriously great. It's just not The Further Adventures Of Paul's Kid, which is a bit surprising after the first three books. The second trilogy is actually more like The Redemption of the Bene Gesserit, and four lays the groundwork for a return to a bit more adventure in five and six on those terms.

And, I mean, I bailed about halfway in the first time I tried it to, because it is a shocking change. And giving it several years and then coming back to it helped, but so did reading The Dune Encyclopedia start to finish after Rhaomi posted about it and man alive that's great stuff. Some of the context in there helped; some of the entries touching more on bits of the history filling the gaps of Leto II's interim reign really bring that gap alive and gave me specific reasons to look forward to seeing what was touched on in God Emperor in a fresh light.

(And a bunch of the stuff that was more on galactic/human history in the millennia prior to Paul's life is really fantastic as well. Details of the Butlerian Jihad, the strange protracted life of paranoid genius inventor Ibraham Holtzman, the backstory of CHOAM, etc. Some of the post-God Emperor stuff is contradicted by Frank's later plotting decisions in books five and six but you can hardly blame him or McNelly for that. Apparently much of the pre-Dune stuff is badly contradicted by dumb plotting decisions in Brian Herbert's prequels because fuck Brian Herbert. But yes. Really fascinating reading. Worth considering as Book 3.5 in the series.)

Clayfeet was a Charlton Comics character in the 40s. Are you thinking of Shitfoot from that Alan Moore 60s pastiche book?

Shitfoot would totally be an Ennis character.

I shit you not I wrote "Moore," deleted it, wrote "Ennis," deleted the whole sentence, rewrote it and forgot to make the switch.
