FAQ: "There is an upper limit of 100 favorites per day". What's a day?
Just curious. I'm going favorite-crazy in the Curiosity thread, and I've reached my limit -- twice today! I had thought we would get 100 favorites allocated each day, but now it's looking more like each new favorite is checked over the total given over the last 24 hour moving window. Which is it?

I'm enthralled by the Mars landing but am puzzled by that thread being so big. This is not a criticism in any way, I'm just Curious. What is it that you've run out of favorites for? What thousand comments are to be made less than 24 hours after launch beyond individual expressions of "wow"? We're not a community of astrophysicists with inside baseball to discuss. If I had tried to guess I would have said it would be 100 comments, 150 tops. What are y'all on about?

Pretty sure it was the livebloggy aspect of it. Most of the time if someone makes a "Hey important thing is going to happen soon, let's watch..." we'll axe it and tell people to post when there's some there there. In this case, the post was decent and it wasn't going to be a trainwrecky thing [i.e. not some "let's see if the crazy bill passes/fails" situation] and we talked and decided to leave it up. That sort of post (see also: many of the Game of Thrones posts) tends to get a lot of rapid comments as opposed to other sorts. That's my best guess anyhow, I wasn't really working so I just watched it on the TV and missed all the online buzz til today.

In the English editions I'm used to, it's woah, or wooah, but it varies according to language. Eddie Izzard does a bit on it. I had assumed that "woah" was the typical French onomatopoeia for barking, but the quite extensive Cross-linquistic onomatopoeias wikipedia article suggests that it's ouaf ouaf, or wouf wouf. Wikipedia might be wrong, or it could be a Belgian French/Walloon idiom.

I'm not really one for travel, so on the one occasion I visited Europe for a work project I was both surprised and amused to find that German cows really do speak with a German accent. If the cows here made the same noise as the cows there, I'm quite sure we would also transcribe it as "muh".
