Anyone interested in creating a spin-off board for NYC MeFites?

There's a lot of us from NYC here and I figure a spin-off board for news, events, shows, questions, and general shit-shooting would be appreciated. We've had some spin-offs that have worked and some that unfortunately have not and if I had half a clue as to what makes the difference between the two I'd have posted this to Projects, but I do not.

In Chicago, we seem to mostly be using twitter for this purpose, with links there to other sites with event details, or articles complaining about road maintenance in the bike lanes, or pictures of our puppies. This way we don't need a wonderchicken on the back-end.

As one of the few NYC-based people who was actually born here let me say two things:

1) get off my lawn, you brooklyn hipsters
2) What would be the purpose of it? (meant honestly, not snarkily). Would it be for NYC-specific FPP-style posts? Would it be specifically for organizing meetups and getting to know fellow NYC-based MeFites? Would it be purely for NYCers to continue to insist upon their own exceptionalism and crow about how awesome Brooklyn is? (ok that last thing was snarky)
3) IMHO, I would prefer fragmentations like this be in a format less likely to 'compete' with the overall metafilter experience, so that people don't need to choose which site they go to, or add yet another side to their list of interesting websites go visit. To that end i think a yahoo group would be awesome.

I would support (and be willing to help administer) something like this for DC as well. A full website is way above my pay grade but a general network of Google groups for regional hangouts questions and whatnot, rather than sticking everything into the melting pot of IRL/Ask, seems like a pretty cool idea.

Metacooler mostly didn't work because I was wishy-washy about moderating it and we failed to attract the large, diverse group of conversants present on, you know, metafilter. So the thread-hopping during TV shows that happens here was actually richer, deeper, and more interesting. No one wanted to go to a separate site to have shadows of a conversation we could be having on a more successful site.

(Also, semi-related: I get weekly IRL invites for the NYC group even though I'm 2 hours upstate--which I signed up for in the vain hope that I'd be informed about Hudson Valley meet-ups. On the one hand, I really want to go to an NYC meet-up someday; Whelkie keeps telling me to come out and chill; you all seem awesome [if a bit intimidating, but then, I'm shy]. On the other, it's kind of like, here's-your-weekly-meet-up-invite-you-probably-won't go to, and I wonder if this will lessen that. It's hard to figure out the right "nearby" radius for a densely populated area like NYS.)

There's an option to abstain from linking your profile to your group ID, but I'm not sure how airtight it is. Looking in the "members" section of the group, looks like most people aren't linking to their Google profile so all I see is a (self-selected) username and group join date.

The group owner/manager(s) can see email addresses and I'm not sure what other info.

As to the Boston group - I used to be a Boston MeFite and I'll be one again this fall and I would totally join a group to pass on recommendations of the four things I know about and say that I'll attend meet ups and then have to cancel at the very last second because My Kid Has Some Bullshit That Needs Attending To.

(And get into lengthy discussions about how to avoid the orange line as much as possible, but really, the blue line is so gross as to make the orange line look positively *welcoming.*)

Yellowbinder, not a bad start, they all live in Astoria however, you can get arrested in parts of Manhattan for thinking about carbs too hard.

Hmmm we're staying with someone's brother, all I know is it is Manhattan. I hope we don't get bear bashed!

Yeah, I mean, why would we make fun of Boston when the Dirty Jerz is just right across the river.

Do not mess with the people of New Jersey. Someday there shall be a central Jersey meetup...

There will be improv performed (by me, partially) in August in Sayreville. If I knew anyone here (other than my husband) in real life I would totally make an IRL post... I need to go to a meetup. Sigh.

where all that's required to become Mayor of a place is to visit it twice.

- visit once, add location to foursquare
- visit a second time you are the mayor
- gloat to no one, receive no benefits

Hope you make it to something, sonika, but just remember: Bowdoin is the appendix of the MBTA. Sure, it probably serves some obscure purpose, like containing/releasing commuters on weekday mornings, but it could easily be removed and the system would function perfectly normally. Even those downtown commuters wouldn't notice.

MBTA jokes: Because watching an entire musical about the T (twice) didn't get it out of my system.

hay guys I moved away from NYC just six months ago, and didn't write an article about it, so I feel good. Also now I live in Portland, which I'm told is "like Brooklyn". Can I join this group?
posted by jivadravya at 10:16 PM on July 12, 2012

if I had half a clue as to what makes the difference between the two I'd have posted this to Projects, but I do not.

I dunno either, exactly, but if you want to buy me 8 or 10 beers, I'll be happy to hang out and come up with some theories!

I suspect I am now too old (and poor) for New York, which is a damned shame. I wish life had taken me there at some point in my wanderings, but so it goes.

I don't live in NYC and have in fact never even visited, I am reading this thread like the weedy little loner kid listening in at the door of the cool kids club house.

To make myself feel better I have spoused elizardbits. Now I feel connected. Now I'm the loner kid with a crush on one of the cool kids who sends her flowers that she assumes are from one of the other cool kids but never asks them about because she's TOO FREAKING COOL.

I need a little sit down.

Sometimes it seems like Metafilter proper has turned into a spin-off board for NYC Mefites.
posted by item at 10:42 AM on July 12 [15 favorites +] [!]

Don't be silly - Metafilter is clearly a spin-off board for Toronto Mefites since we, of course, the centre of the universe.

But now I'm curious: what city/region have there been the most posts about? And if we discount posts that are also national-level news (Occupy Wall St, London Riots) and look at just truly local posts - which place come out on top then? I feel like I'm seeing Toronto local/city news here a lot more than other places, but maybe I'm just more aware, or more likely to see NYC/London/Washington news as being national/international.

quickie search of the site shows:

588 MeFi posts with the nyc tag
4253 AskMe posts with the nyc tag
257 MeTa posts with the nyc tag

(no idea what the percentage from the overall is though)

using another example, posts tagged with "london" are 1224 on MeFi, 1963 on AskMe, and 142 on MeTa.
posted by elizardbits at 10:59 AM on July 13, 2012

Also there are surely posts that would fall into these categories that have been untagged/poorly tagged, and included posts with those tags that really have little to do with either category.
posted by elizardbits at 11:01 AM on July 13, 2012

Also, the constant deluge of posts about London, Ontario are probably messing up those numbers.
