MetaFilter Shirts. For real, this time. Let's make it happen. July 11, 2012 2:31 PM   Subscribe

In March, we talked about a new round of t-shirts being made, Mat said that he'd "found a new printer/fulfillment operation that could do it." and then radio silence.

What needs to happen to make these a reality? Should we set up a projects to lock down/crowdsource design thoughts or slogan ideas? Matt would you consider delegating the creation to someone, if you don't have the time to make it happen?

We just need to add a little metastarter to the mix and then ...

I do have a printing/fulfillment company I could use this time around, I just need some designs. Last time around we sort of solicited a few designs, there were only a couple I thought hit the right balance of MetaFilter-related and something for fans to appreciate without being so inside jokey that you'd get tired explaining to people what it meant. So basically the goal is a normal/amusing shirt that makes a little sense to outsiders and a lot more sense to insiders and looks good.

The next shirt go-round will likely have basic MeFi logo shirts and 1-2 other designs. I liked one design suggested by a user but we never could agree on a workable payment scheme. I'm open to mockups/sketches here and would pay someone a flat rate for a shirt design that I think is fair (I think we're only going to sell maybe 50-100 shirts, so $500/max/design feels about right to me, considering I only make about $7/shirt).

On Kruno Budiselic:

However, entering into Guinness Book of World Records is not something entirely new to him. This is because this extraordinary record breaker also holds the world record of opening beer bottles, in pushing cars, in moon walking, as well as in the highest number of push-ups in 60 seconds.

That strange loud noise you just heard was my heart strings being plucked like never before.

The old "Please Hope Me" tshirt is annoying to explain, but it's a perfect shirt to wear to bed after a long night of drinking, only to wake up on an air-mattress that has a slow leak and deflated overnight, and you get up at noon and your head is pounding, so you stagger to your friends refrigerator only to find that it's empty except for some rotten Chinese takeout. So then you stumble outside into the sunlight and you realize, shit, you're in South Philly and don't know where the fuck you are, so you stumble around for a bit looking for a convenience store, and you find one and buy some Tea, but the Tea isn't working. After a few blocks you come to Passyunk and it's mostly empty, and it's still hot, and you don't know where you're going to eat, so you walk back 5 blocks to your friend's place and knock on the door, and he leads you to a diner where you order pancakes and just stare at each other going "this hangover sucks"

I think the shirt should say "MeFi's Own" on the front.

There should be two designs. One design should have the "Me Figh" phoenetic pronounciation on the back, and the other should have the "Meh Fee" phoenetic pronounciation on the back.

Colors should be blue, green, gray, black, and white, and sometimes Y.

Well, as i'm sure the "Metafilter User # xxxxx" would be prohibitively expensive, I'd be fine with logo shirts in blue and green.

Also would love a "MetaFilter [+]"

Maybe "I'm a MeFite"

(i'm also too old for witty t-shirts, though it certainly doesn't stop me from wearing them).

In my mind, an ideal shirt would
1) Identify yourself to fellow MeFi-ers as being a tribe member
2) Provide something that curious folk could use as an opportunity to ask about.

Nursery rhyme in my head

And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.

Maybe a remake of the image theme but the plate running away with the bean. Can't think of other replacement mefi specific players or things that get posted a lot.

My normal XXXL shirts are baggy on me, but I had to lose over 50 pounds before my MeFi XXXL shirt even came close to fitting.

I'll also throw in a vote for a coffee mug, and since we're making suggestions, I'd really love a hoodie or a sweatshirt.

posted by benito.strauss at 11:40 PM on July 11, 2012

It's hard to pick the right catch phrase. I mean, I like "Flag and Move On" as a slogan, but it's associated with people making dickish comments — that's not what I want to think about.

So what if we use the "Note"s that are under the comment live preview on each sub-site:
  • MetaFilter: Help maintain a healthy, respectful discussion.
  • MetaTalk: Everyone needs a hug.
  • AskMetaFilter: As useful as you make it.
  • MeFiIRL: You're going to see these people in real life.
(apologies to the other sub-sites)

They're not the wittiest things in world, but I think they reflect the spirit of the site(s) very well. I could almost argue that they are at the heart of the MeFi experience; we've put them at the most important location on each site.

I can't figure out how we fit them all on one t-shirt. Though the true bon ton de MeFi would of course have one for each, in their respective colors, and choose to wear the one that best fits their mood and the season.

Hey, just wanted to drop an update: I'm working with a tshirt printing/fulfillment company (we are at the stage of contracts needing to be drafted and signed first) and hoping to launch a couple designs (one by a mefite, the other design will be just the standard logo) whenever we can. I'm hoping they can start taking orders in the next couple weeks.

As always, we'll go with Not American Apparel for previously stated reasons. Usually we go with Alternate Apparel or Royal Apparel (or all the other confusingly similarly named US shirt companies that make well-fitted tees).

So, just to check...how can we keep on top of when t-shirts are available again? Check this post in a couple weeks? Will there be something posted on the sidebar? Thank you for setting it up again, mathowie!

I imagine we will have at least a nice loud Metatalk announcement when they're for sale and a sidebar mention to go with it.

That Alternative Apparel Social Responsibility page is such a cop-out. Every line basically just boils down to "We won't exploit our workers to the point of actually breaking the law in whatever country they live in, but reserve the right to exploit them right up to that line." It's dressed up in very affirmative language but basically they say that they pay employees at least minimum wage, comply with legal overtime requirements, comply with local environmental regulations, and don't employ actual slaves. I guess they're a little better than most in that their non-discrimination policy is more comprehensive and maybe "legal age of adulthood" means that they don't employ kids in their sweatshops, although it'd be better if they just said "yo, you have to be over 16 to work in our factories" or something rather than getting all weaselly about it.

I mean I'm fine with using them as a supplier as I don't know of anyone who's actually materially better than that, but it annoys me when companies brand themselves as being all goody-goody and socially responsible without actually making a commitment to paying their workers a living wage rather than just the legal minimum in whatever third-world country they have their factories.
