Has a thread ever hit the wall? That is, still been active and chatty (with more than two participants) when it was time for auto-archiving?
That one about the Israeli atheists circumcising de-clawed feline rape victims just would not die, for some reason.

Well, there's that Palin monstrosity that still holds the site record for longest thread. That one stayed chatty for pretty much its whole month of life, mostly on the strength of the wacky adventure in US electioneering that kept unfolding.
Generally when threads keep going for the full month it seems mostly to be because people in the thread feel like pushing the longboat aspect for its own sake; the fact that The Thread Will Close with some sort of increasing proximity becomes a point of discussion (or a prompt for silliness) in its own right, more so than the original topic holding folks' attention.

that might be too dry to convey the intention. i'm totally kidding.
But yeah, most of the super long threads either
a) devolve into meta-conversations about the length of the thread and silliness
b) are driven on by a small number of entrenched debaters or
c) are focused on continually-unfolding current events, it seems.

The recent Zimmerman thread was still going strong, including news updates and discussion (in addition to some fighty stuff), when it was locked. I was sad to see it go.

Those types of threads always seemed longer too when folks could post images of pissing elephants. There are some things about the good ole days I do not miss.

There was a recent GoT thread that wasn't particularly high-drama, but was definitely still going with 5 or 6 people commenting when it closed.

I can't think of another MetaTalk thread with such a dramatic twist - it's tootling along all pro-and peculiar, and then... HURF DURF U.N. OWEN.

I have a feeling that homunculus and I will end up dueling to the death in some thread, far from the eyes of the crowd, submitting relevant links and maintaining the 'recent activity' page until we fall, silently, off the cliff of the one-month limit.
Yet I am a mere upstart compared to his longstanding prowess.

This year's April Fools thread in MeTa was still giving participants "staff tags" at 11:59pm Pacific Time on April 30th.
And the "B**ngB**ng thread in MeFi revealed a bug (since fixed) when it was closed after 30 days but because it was started on the 30th of a month without a 31st, the next day (31st of the next month) it came back to life, with plenty of witnesses - the first time it closed, there were over 50 comments in its last hour (as they were intentionally working toward 2500 comments), then 40 more comments just about the reincarnation/zombification.

Some threads get so long that people stop posting in them not because they've nothing to say, but because the thread's file size gets so unwieldy that it's painful to load, reload, and navigate.

When erect, the penis was about one‐quarter of the echidna’s body length.Probably a good thing humans are not of the same proportion.
