Pop-up YouTube HTML5? May 15, 2012 8:28 AM   Subscribe

Would it be possible to make the pop-up YouTube player have an HTML5 preference?

Under the current Linux implementation of Flash, red and blue are swapped if you are using hardware acceleration. I wish I could get rid of Flash completely.

This is something you need to set on the YouTube side of things. We're using their HTML5 player embed code, so if you're not getting the HTML5 player this is a YouTube issue. I believe they have a setting in your YouTube account that specifies you'd like the HTML5 player, but I'm not positive offhand.

If you've opted in to html5 at www.youtube.com/html5 the player should remember that. Not all videos will work there (although more than before and soon should be virtually 100%).

(Can't test right now but I'm pretty sure it uses the iframe embeds which should be remembering html5 preference).

Yeah, look like this is the blog post about the "new" embed that supports HTML5.

Yep, that's what we're using smackfu.

I think it's so cool that we have our own attendant YouTube tech in the house. If you're ever at the new BH office, wildcrdj, swing by the library and I'll buy you some fudge.

pashdown, thanks for explaining why YouTube's half-broken for me at the moment on Linux. html5's working for me on the previews here.

I'm seeing HTML5 views from the metafilter embed player at the same % as overall HTML5 plays, and personal testing seems to verify that this works as well. Note that the opt-in is a cookie and thus per-browser not per-account (on my personal machines I tend to have it on HTML5 on Linux and Flash on Windows)

Main thing if you want to force it is to do the opt-in. For monetized videos it's subject to some ad restrictions (although some ad types do work on HTML5 now, so the # of videos that will revert to Flash is shrinking, and we're working on getting that to 100% coverage).

[and thanks carson :) ]
