Someone already linked the contribution index thing, it's interesting other posters are a head of me, but that list changes over time. I think DU was actually number one when I hit 20k.
From the 20k thread:
Also, it took 5 years and about 3 months to get to 10k, but only 2 years 10 months to get from 10k to 20k, which is a little worrisome.Apparently it took me 2 years, 5 months, and 4 days this time. So unfortunately my rate is still increasing, but it appears that concerns over a singularity have been allayed.

It's an interesting change that has come over the site in the last few years - perhaps the rise of twitter and "status updates" has tilted things towards funniest/fastest over thoughtful reflecting.
I wonder if this has something to do with the rise of smartphones.

I'm probably one of the people you're talking about, but the site has always been like that. People who post multi-paragraph comments are not the norm and never have been. And as far as I can tell, Delmoi is still out-pacing me and most other people at the top of the 'contribution index'.

My guess is that a word count analysis would turn up a few interesting things. I would bet the mean and mode are up but the median point is down. More users who have more to say, but the converse is probably just as true. I'm just glad this place doesn't have threaded comments, like Reddit, which seems to induce people to constantly use short and snappy zingers. Not like that doesn't happen here, but it doesn't seem to happen to a large degree in the midst of a conversation.

Histograms of Metafilter comments, by number of characters, broken down by year (omitting 1999 and 2012). The red lines are the medians for each year. The modes you can roughly see for yourself.
The mean is badly distorted by a relatively small number of very long comments. For example, the average nondeleted comment length is 6,253 characters; the longest 0.1% of comments are 5,625 characters and up, up, up to 226,831 characters.

There's an option to have one's activity munged in the Infodump so that it is dissociated from your userid. Not many people opt for it, but it exists and I believe BP is one of the few on the munge list.

I saw that one in the FAQ. You have to publicly write a full paragraph, in MetaTalk, about why you want a munging. Also, include your feelings about the subject of mungings and how you think it will affect others in the future. If you are found to be deserving, the mods will respond with a time and place the munging will occur. When it is over, please include a follow up report on the munging. Details are appreciated, but please be responsible with possible spoilers.

Trurl, a shame the two accounts can't be merged somehow.
It's a slight nuisance to have to asterisk all self-references to my stats. But a merge would still only put me at 7th place on the Most Posts list. [In your face, y2karl!] And after 30,000 favorites, it probably is time to stop counting.
So I'm probably more distinguished by having had two such prominent careers. Beese has been retired for almost a year now and he's still ahead of jessamyn on the Contribution Index. That's scary.

How does one activate this option.
By very unambiguously and clearly not jokingly or lightly asking to have their activity munged. I had at least one "sounded like a straight-faced request" situation turn later on into a "hey why have I been munged?" spit-take, so I'm really boringly explicit about wanting a straightforward "I understand I likely won't appear in future casual analysis and can't be found in the infodumpster and etc, please add me to the munge list" request (in public or via email, I don't care) before I'll make the change.
If someone decides they want to be munged and then decides later they want to not be munged, that is technically doable and I'm fine doing that dance once. It's not something I want to keep going back and forth on with anyone, which has not to date been a problem but just putting it out there.
I'm trying to think of a reason why someone would do this, without coming to the conclusion that they are embarrassed by their own activity here.
There's a more neutral read that someone just might not feel like having their activity appear in a casually correlateable pile of data. Which, if that's how you feel that's how you feel and I don't really have an objection to it if so. The Infodump is all drawn from publicly visible content that could be scraped by anyone with shitty intentions, so munging the Infodump isn't actually any kind of protection against dataminers with bad attitudes, but I figure if as a speedbump it eases a couple people's minds that's an okay outcome at the end of the day even if it's not something I see any practical utility in myself.

Yeah, more to the point it would be possible to unmunge a munged ID even with a very large number of people using the system, because comment and post activity are still correlateable on the actual site. It is a speedbump only, a way to avoid showing up in casual searches of things like the infodumpster, and acts as a gentle hint to datawankers to maybe respect the implied wishes of the mungee.

stavrosthewonderchicken: "Also, I was feeling like 'how the fuck have I spent all this time here over the last decade and not washed up like spent eurotrash at the top of at least some of these lists' and then I realized that Metatalk is my local and I felt vindicated if not all that much better."
It's quite clear and unsurprising to me where I belong in this place, although I was somewhat surprised to be #25 on the MeTa All-stars list, especially given that there are quite a few above me on the list that aren't around any more.

...although it seems odd that I'm in exactly the same spot and the order above me seems to be the same whether I use data from my join date or from 'day one'.

Beese has been retired for almost a year now and he's still ahead of jessamyn on the Contribution Index. That's scary.
I spend more time in AskMe than MeFi, and probably more time here than either of those places. I'd say it's not that surprising.

yeah, I'll give one-frame-per-week a shot. I might also add some kind of moving average of the distribution, to make it easier to see trends.

Trurl, I forget you were Joe Beese! And Civil_Disobedient is now gone? How'd I miss that?

Hey, I don't want to waste an ask me question for this, but maybe someone who is still reading the thread knows the answers:
There's a phrase for the kind of question where people ask how to implement a solution to a problem, but they don't mention the problem they're trying to solve, and it's the wrong solution for the problem -- anyone remember what that is?

Nope, serious question, thanks :) A surprisingly hard thing to google for.

empath: I have half as many comments, but almost 15,000 more favorites, does that count for something?
Not really. Favourites were implemented soon after you joined, whereas nearly half of delmoi's time here didn't include the biscuit system.

What happened in mid-August 2001 that seemingly wiped comments for a couple days (more than a blink, less than a pause)?

Matt straight up took a couple weeks off, and everybody else took it off with him.
