I think this could go on the blue, but the last time I tried on a link from a blog it was deleted. Would this work?

Maybe get your link from someone other than the poor hating, racist, global warming denying, nazi scumbags that are the daily mail.

oh - and if you're going to go weather related, here's another reason why you should never link the Daily Mail.

A single-link, Daily Mail, climate change denialism post is unlikely to survive, and guaranteed to be unpopular.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 9:07 AM on January 30, 2012 [2 favorites]

A thinly sourced and deceptive article (see: the graph of temperatures taking advantage of the outlier year of 1998) from a single newspaper? About as bad as a post from a single blog.

Do your homework. I can see that your total contributions to climate discussion on the blue is "Climate change = hoax." You will have to do better than that. Maybe you should try to participate in the next climate discussion with some solid research and arguments instead of putting up a sad, single, weak link as an FPP.
posted by maudlin at 9:08 AM on January 30, 2012 [2 favorites]

There's an existing post on climate change from the last few days that was already pretty contentious. Additionally what seanyboy said, a single link to a news article from the Daily Mail is likely not a good idea. Feel free to email us if you're just curious about whether a link would make a good post.

Really. The Daily Mail should be banned. They're fucking ignorant, right wing trolls. I can't even begin to express my frustration that they're beginning to work out how to win the internet (cute pictures and badly researched "science").

Maybe link many of the various Mailwatch blogs that report on the lies told by the Mail. Or the Oncology Ontology which documents the Mails increasingly shrill attempts to classify all the worlds things into those that give and those that cure cancer.

Maybe leave the fuckers well alone. It's depressing enough that they're even allowed to print papers. Seeing their names on metafilter fills me with so much GRAAR, I can't even begin to express it.

posted by iamabot at 9:35 AM on January 30, 2012

Yeah and I should be really really clear: if your assertion is that, despite all scientific evidence to the contrary, global warming is not happening, it's almost impossible to make that post and not look like you are trolling or severely misinformed or ignorant. Using the Daily Mail to back up that assertion will not work. If you just want to argue with people about fringe theories of climate change, you might not want to do that here.

The Daily Mail prints climate nonsense

The actual Met Office press release:

"While 2010 was a record warm year, in 2011 we saw a very strong La Niña which can temporarily cool global temperatures.

"The La Niña has returned and although it is not as strong as early last year, it is still expected to influence temperatures in the year ahead. Therefore we expect 2012 to be slightly warmer than last year but not as warm as 2010."

Horace, how do we flip open that book? I want to read more.

Unfortunately, all that's digitized is the title page, because someone ordered it as an illustration for a journal article. You're welcome to come to Houghton to see it, or if you have access to a library that subscribes to Early English Books Online, you can see it there. I thought people weren't allowed to post stuff in metatalk as test runs for the blue, especially if they know full well that it wouldn't fly.

They're not. However the larger issue of how bad a source the Daily Mail is plus talking about people who are asking about posting global warming denier stuff is a larger topic. But yes, if this turns into a thread about the content of the link itself, we'll wrap that up because that's not okay.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 9:53 AM on January 30, 2012

Fair enough - if it's understood, however, that the issue is articles from the Daily Mail and how to handle denialism on Mefi, is there any reason to leave the link URL intact, feeding the Daily Mail hits? I think everything we need to know about the article is well covered in these first few comments.

If you, notned, are going to be That Guy about climate change, at least make enough of an effort in constructing a post that it makes it clear you have some familiarity with the actual science - not the Daily Mail's version of science - around the issue. posted by jamjam at 10:54 AM on January 30, 2012

If you look at this and the list here it is pretty easy to plot Sunspot activity in conjunction with the warmest years on record. Not much correlation to be found as far as I can tell.

Not sure what continues to drive the "SUNSPOTS ARE THE CAUSZ!!" crowd, especially in light of easy to find data to the contrary.

He could well be too timid to come in with all the blasting the link got. And I'd understand that temerity. Was this a legitimate question? eh, 50/50. hard to tell if he really has a handle on how Metafilter proper actual works as he is hardly there. I realize now that climate is an issue that people tend to hold their own views on.

Or.. you know the views and considerable opinion of the overwhelming majority of scientists who's work has more than a nodding acquaintance with the actual data.

I mean it is not even really debate any longer. There literally has not been a significant challenge to the notion that climate change is man made in... I don't know? Decades? This is not some OMG world order conspiracy, but the simple fact that nothing thrown out there sticks and as we go on the more hyperbole things become. The Daily Mail? 16 random scientists(in tangentially related fields), sun spots? It is weak. It is not a matter of holding your own views any more than saying gravity... well everyone holds their own view on weather or not it works. The sun, giant ball of flaming matter or some bright object pushed across the sky by a dung beetle... well everyone has their views.

Hate to tell you, but not all opinions are equally valid. You say the sky is blue and I say it is a bowl of red jello? Not even close. Jello all the way.

Everyone has their own views on the subject.

My favorite climate change info nugget lately is this blog post by a guy [brother of a friend] who argues that if you truly do not believe that the climate is changing, the best thing to do would be to put your money where your mouth is and invest in the insurance companies that are currently taking a terrible bath because of all the weather related claims they've been dealing with in the past year to 18 months. If it's anomalous then everything will bounce back, you'll be invested in these companies and you'll make a killing because everyone else is pulling out. But if there really is some sort of global warming stuff going on, the insurance industry is just going to get more and more overextended. So, are we in a new normal or is this just a random-ish set of weird weather patterns?

Heh. not just the Mouseketeers.

Oddly enough, I was thinking about Funicello just a couple of days ago. About how she was a, er, touchstone for kids of the 50s and even those of us who were kids of the 60s and 70s knew about her, because of our parents, I guess. But the postwar era through the middle-80s was still a time when there were these universal cultural touchstones that we don't quite have anymore. And I wonder what the cut-off is for people who've heard of busty Annette Funicello.

"...And I wonder what the cut-off is for people who've heard of busty Annette Funicello."

People who watched her guest star in sitcoms without need of an introduction.

Or just people who watched sitcoms.

You forgot 1978's Granny Beat, which was be-a-dear reviewed.

It was also the first of the "journal shows" adapted for television. It was followed by Late Night Beat which only the weary viewed. Less successful was Superman Beat—whose script was so bad, I hear Reeve euw'd. Even earlier, the silver screen had the silent film Canal Beat, about the Erie feud. Most critics agreed the voiced version was better.

Some things, though, you gotta experience in person. Lenin Beat, for example, is bier-reviewed.

I know the thread has drifted onto beats (but not Beats or beets) but I wanted to give kudos to the OP for being so gracious. MeTa is a tough crowd and you took your licks.

Now go and do not read the Daily Mail again.
