Son of "a desk is a dangerous place, redux" January 26, 2012 9:51 PM Subscribe
I know I asked this about 10 months ago, but I'm so excited about my new proper work desk! Our workplace was remodeled during the summer; my old desk was demolished and I was working from a large Rubbermaid cart until this beauty showed up. So please indulge me, and join me: "Show us your desks again, pretty please!"
No way. I just finished a project, that is I had finished until the changes started coming in. MY desk is here somewhere under a mass of printouts, but you can easily picture it by looking in any paper recycling bin.

All that we see in this world might just be shadows of the spirit world beyond, but as long as some of those shadows are thick enough to hold up a keyboard & display, the old order may persist, much to your astral dismay.

I have been doing HealthMonth with the MeFi team and learned that putting things out in the open is highly motivating when it comes to change. I loved looking at the desks and thought, "hey, mine isn't that bad after all." But then I turned and looked at my desk, not my workstation, and realized that this would be the moment I would put it out there, face the truth about my desk, and at the risk of the public humiliation for doing nothing I would spend the afternoon trying to clear off that desktop. There is only one annotation for the stuff on that desk -- "things that I have not looked at in over a year."

I also have a rice cooker behind the one monitor, and I've since rotated the TV to be horizontal instead of vertical. I really need plants. Next is plants.

Also also, you can see someone's brain waves in the first picture on the TV on the bottom. It's a bit noisy/blinky, but there!
OK. I'm done.

Two Lights... we were truly impressed until we learned that you had to sit at your desk and eat rice while the rest of us went out for steak and lobster... 99%/1% whatever, whatever....

Infini, is that a netbook, or are those bizarrely oversize USB plugs stuck in the side of a laptop?
Anyway, here's mine. I'd just posted it publicly because I wanted to show off the painting my mum did for me.
I don't get the window view, but if I did, I'd be in what one of the IT desktop support guys calls the best office in the organisation (4000 employees), so I guess I can turn around and enjoy the space. Everyone else in the office gets 24" monitors, too.

Two lights - Like everyone, I am incredibly jealous of your setup. But THANK YOU for inspiring me to put a rice cooker in my office. Best idea ever.

two lights above the sea, that is brilliant! My next monitor is going to be wall-mounted!
Also, it would be pretty cool if that wall-mounted monitor had two lights on it, and the other monitors had the Sea.

Ooh, ooh, am I too late? Because I remembered I have this shot from the last time I took my assistant to the office. She's there to provide scale for the ridiculous amount of screen real estate I appropriated for myself. (Being the senior research assistant has its advantages.)
(Is it obvious that two lights and I work in the same office, what with the ridiculous numbers of 30" cinema displays floating around?)

I guess "assistant" should be in quotes, because she's rubbish at alphabetizing. Sheds everywhere too.

No no, it's not too late until the thread is closed, in like 28 days or so. Yes, Verdant, if that's really your desk, um, we have questions! But nice shot, nonetheless. sonika, what an interesting story your blog shows. two lights above the sea and three monitors, one vertical. Yep, that is amazing! I thought that was maple syrup too, care to elaborate? What I'd love to see, if he would consent to show it, is pb's desk; have we ever seen that? We've got Jessamyn's, cortex's, restless_nomad and vacapinta, whose desk is as elegant as he is. How about it, other mods? Taz? Mathowie, we haven't seen your desk since the first desk post. Feel like showing us an update? Moar desks, plz!

Hoorah! I love these threads. Forget the lamentations of the women, these and bookshelf threads are best in life. So many cozy, enviable workspaces. (Most happy-making: deborah's gargoyle collection.)
I cleaned my desk for the first time in months this morning and I shamefully confess - I considered pretending my desk is always like this.
But then I realised that lying is wrong, so here is the sordid truth, after I put some of the piles of Desk Stuff that were living temporarily on the couch back. For true reality, times it by about three and add some coffee rings.
But the best thing about my desk is this.
Combine it with an obliging partner and it's like being a wizard - some sonorous chanting plus the tolling of a bell and coffee magically appears beside me. Magic!

My people just check periodically, and refill as needed. If I have to ask for coffee, something is very wrong and I need to go and check to make sure everyone is still on station.

About once a week, a delivery person from Texas Coffee Traders walks through the door to my office with 10 lbs. of freshly-roasted beans. She is like some sort of minor goddess, whose mystical powers baffle and delight by equal measure.
I'm frequently the grinder/brewer guy, and I accept my responsibility with humble acknowledgement of its importance. So, I ask not for whom the bell tolls.

I don't have a desk at home at the moment, as we just moved into a new house and dumped a lot of old crappy stuff on the way, including my desk.
I mostly hang out on MeFi at work anyway, so this is probably more appropriate.
