Look, clearly you don't know a lot about server technology. I transferred the site's core operations to my workstation before we brought the main site down. You can't just take a site off-line completely; do that and its positronic matrix will collapse and you'll lose all the accumulated experiences from its db and have to start from a blank slate. So you have to rehost temporarily, and keep it company because the process is fairly emotionally intensive for the server. It's like a houseplant, you've got to talk to it.

Ive got a soprano Fender, with a little Tele headstock thing going on. Plus a baritone Washburn, maybe from the 40's, that is a dead ringer for what Trapper John used to play on M*A*S*H.

I cannot take credit for the music on this one; that's actually uke wizard Jake Shimabukuro, but I don't know the name of the actual track because the ID3 tags on that album got fucked up.

Maybe I am most annoyed with MBAs.
I signed off on the change control but it wasn't requested I be on the voice bridge to perform application testing to sign off that the changes were good. There are some people who call every voice bridge for every change just or check in, but I got better things to than spend every Friday and Saturday night on conference calls.

Well, there's your lesson Ad hominem, and I hope you learned it: stop having better things to do on weekends and stop making the rest of the engineers socially inadequate.

If reports from North Korea are to be believed, MeFi's downtime was at approximately the same time Kim Jong Il died. If one watces the zany video that 'purportedly' "accounted" for the so-called Mod Squad's '''activities''' during said ''''downtime'''', one can clearly see that many of those scenes were filmed DURING THE DAY. One may begin to wonder where the alleged Mod Squad actually were during that supposed downtime, when their various talents and particular abilities were not required here on the site.
One may wonder; one may wonder about that, and also one may wonder about what the 'It' in "Is it done yet?"? is actually referring to.
OR WHO.

It is actually the older guys, most of them have grown kids and work is pretty much their hobby. Depending on who calls in, a voice bridge at midnight eastern can be pretty fun, the guys executing the change, of which I am usually one, are pretty much on mute while they work. You get senior execs calling in drunk and verbally sparring with each other. You get some guys only a few years from retirement telling stories about the mainframe era.
I used to execute all my changes from the office, so I would be there waiting till 9 or 10 for them to start. Plenty of weeks a bunch of would hang out and we would bullshit, we had a VP of technology that passed out plastic cups of scotch and we would sit in one of the conference rooms smoking cigars. After a successful rollout to production we would hit the bars, find one where our sales guys were so we could expense everything.
Working in technology at a huge company isn't as bad as people think.

I can attest to this, especially when things break. Nothing is more fun than sitting, breathless, while two vice presidents scream at each other or a dude who remembers punch card computers spins tales of ye olden days. The best one was the one where the vice president got on and started slagging off someone and that person said, in a remarkably controlled voice, that they were calling that person's boss and that the vp should log off as he would probably not be required on conference calls going forward. I learned a valuable lesson about the unwisdom of pissing off old dudes who know where all the bodies are buried that night.

ARE WE THERE YET?!
My father's response to that was always "No, we're here." Accurate, yet totally unhelpful.
I want to show this video to everyone who keeps asking me if I've got into labor yet.
The last ten days or so of my pregnancy, I would answer the phone "Still pregnant" just to head that off at the pass. Also had to clarify on gChat a few times that I would *NOT* be online were I in labor and would have at least tweeted if I had the baby, so "ZOMG ARE YOU HAVING THE BABY?!" was not a question to which the answer would ever be "Funny you should mention that..."

I have a friend who speaks Ojibwe. It is, I understand, a "leisurely language." He used to label the contents of all his pantry jars across the lid in English and around the lid in Ojibwe, leading me to believe that Ojibwe takes approximately π times longer than English. Anyway, he claimed that there was no way to ask "Are we almost there?" in Ojibwe, because, by the time you had asked, you would have arrived.
So, I suggest that there is no way to ask "Are we almost there?" on Metafilter, because, after the AskMe question was posted, answers offered, comments flagged, the question deleted, MeTa opened, and the thread closed, we would, indeed, have arrived, hung out, gotten bored, had children, raised them, had a couple of nice mixers, raised a second generation, and returned home.
Apparently, there are some things MeFites Are Not Meant to Know....
Not for moral reasons; it's a hard barrier in physics.

Judging by the amount of light in Jessamyn's parts, and the fact that it's the shortest days of the year in Vermont, I'm guessing they were filmed at like, what, 3:30 in the afternoon?

Dear AskMe,
I am thinking about replacing all the chairs in my house with sex swings. What is the best way to let house guests know there is no shoes allowed on the swings!? I'm thinking a big sign posted on my front door stating 'No Shoes On The Sex Swings' in obvious black and white font is best, but my SO wants to make the sign in awkward colors like fuschia to "spruce things up." Please tell me I am right.
