How will I search for my favorite pony? December 13, 2011 1:35 PM   Subscribe

Wondering if it's possible to limit a search to just within my favorited posts?

I use post favorites to bookmark threads that I want to "save." Usually it's threads full of useful information, recipes, answers to problems that I'm trying to solve or think I will need to solve one day. I have a lot of favorited posts.

Sometimes I'll do a search for something and will turn up a post that I've already favorited. I'm wondering if it's possible to just search within my favorites. I can imagine the technical difficulty that this might pose but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Sure, go to your favorites page and use the search form at the top right of the page.

Is that new? I noticed it only last week.

Nope, it's been there since we added local search a few years ago.

Yeah, at least two and a half or three years now.

Thank you for my beautiful pony! Heh. Wow. There it is. Even better than I imagined.

I knew about searching your own favorites, but I failed to generalize it to anyone's favorites. So thanks, amanda for this question, and pb, for linking directly to amanda's favorites page! Huzzah!

i offhandedly mentioned this in a metatalk thread once, like "man it'd be awesome if..." and the mods immediately were like "it's already there!" i don't think i've ever asked for a pony before only to discover it'd been in my back yard all along.

Ha! Now can we automatically have generated a psychological profile of me based on my favorites? Or is that already there, some button I just don't see yet.
posted by amanda at 2:04 PM on December 13, 2011

You joke about psychological profiles, but take a look at the suggested tag list for My MeFi and My Ask. They're based partially on things you favorite.

Ooooh.

Ha-ha.

Hmmm.... must log off now.

Well if we're giving out ponies, I want a small one:

On the profile page the "search user's activity" field is on the upper right side of the page. On the search result page the field gets moved down and all the way over to the left.

This leads to confusion, particularly in the form of intending to search that user for another set of keywords, but instead accidentally using the global search field which is still on the upper right.

Could we keep the search user's activity field on the right on the search result page?

If we're taking a poll, my suggested tag list just freaked me out a bit with its accuracy. Nothing embarrassing -- or at least nothing that people who didn't also read my own comments couldn't figure out -- but as far as profiles go, it's certainly not INaccurate.

I always appreciate threads like these -- though they also make me feel a little guilty because y'all have obviously done so much work behind the scenes that I don't take the time to appreciate on a day to day basis.

pb, does the My Mefi suggested tags take into account the tags of your own posts? I was noticing the difference in tags from the 3rd column of my profile page [MeFi tags: art (28) space (17) photography (15) comics (12) film (10) fun (10) nasa (10) apollo (9) design (9) science (9)] vs the suggested tags on My Mefi (politics apple USA obama ipad iphone america terrorism BarackObama osamabinladen alqaeda art SteveJobs comics election palin GOP music photography YouTube women mccain sarahpalin history starwars)

No, it just uses tags from your favorite posts and comments.

Yeah, I can see the confusion there. You can also search through people's activity like so. And I think it would be confusing to start out with the search form on the right on that page.

Could tags from posts made by the user be added? I'm guessing that people would only post about stuff that interests them.

Those are just some suggestions to get you started. They're not meant to be a comprehensive list of things you like. Sometimes it works out that way, that's why I mentioned it. But that's not what we're going for there.

I'm going to throw out a question now, because I don't want to clutter up the MeTa front page with "do you remember this" posts, but I remember an FPP from forever ago, about a different thread where people shared adorably mortifying stories about their kids. It was a great thread, but I can't find it, and the most memorable one (the story which I believe began the linked thread, IIRC) was also horrible to try to search for, but involved a dad having his poker game with his buddies, and his two-year-old daughter running into the room naked and excited, shouting, "daddy! I've got my own pocket! It can fit a pen!"

This is an awful thing to be searching for based on what little specifics I remember, but it was a great thread and I'm almost certain I found it here. Does anyone else remember this? Searching My Favorites does nothing (and it might have been before favorites were implemented, actually.)

If you were part of the backtagging project, you might have tagged old posts whose main link or links were broken.
