Could we revisit the close-a-proposed-meetup thing on IRL?
I think the last time this was discussed was July and the discussion ended at just let a mod know and they'll kill it on their end.
Since then, several proposed meetups (at least over here in Chicago) have fizzled out. When I was the proposer, I asked pb to close mine up, but now there are meetups hanging out on the sidebar that aren't mine (so pb would probably have to contact the OP to ok it, meaning more mod-side work) and their presence making me twitchy.
Is the best thing to do still to let the mods know? (If so, Chicago needs some work...) Or could we have some sort of button option that the OP of the thread could click to close it up on their end?
Thanks!

Proposed meetups do fall off the sidebar after a certain amount of time. Sounds like we need to make that a shorter amount of time, perhaps.
As always, the OP can send us a note via the contact form and we can close it up.

I'm worried that wouldn't actually be used and we'd still be in the same situation. People don't even bother to comment in proposed meetup threads that don't work out. I'm not sure they'd take the time to find a close option.

Both of these are from mid-October. (One was for Halloween, though, so is obviously not going to happen.) It probably also wouldn't hurt for me to recalibrate my OCD Twitchometer for a longer amount of time.

At the next meetup remind me to ask if you're pooping right then.

How did this thread turn so quickly into being all about my butt? You guys are so silly. You're supposed to save the lolbutts stuff for Fridays!

Just took a look. On MetaTalk, proposed meetups are listed for 14 days. On IRL, there are a couple different time periods. In the "Upcoming events near you" sidebar list, they are listed for 1 month past the posted date. In the "Proposed Meetups" sidebar list they are listed for 2 months past the posted date. So we could adjust these a bit to handle abandoned threads.

I was asked by another Chicagoan to email the mods to shut down an IRL post I made, because it was just sitting there. I did so, and was told that proposed IRL posts are never shut down. So, when did that change?

When we talked via email in September I mentioned that Proposed meetups aren't deleted, but they are closed up. And I closed it up.

We don't poop, that would be revolting! We just have to powder our noses a lot.
We also don't fart, and if we do it smells of peach blossom.

My lady fair,
When passing air,
The air doth smell of bacon.
All other lasses,
Pass lesser gases;
All other men: forsaken!

Now that's the proper way to threadshit!
Also, props to pb for managing to stay on subject while all around him people are yelling POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP POOOOOOOOOP POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP POOOOOP.
With all those extra O's these poops look like Google results.

Just a suggestion, but how about phunniemee change's her profile photo to a thumbs down (smile or not is up to her) for when she's not pooping. Keeping the existing photo for those time's she is seems logical. That might save Brandon Blatcher and others on the "Is she pooping?" watch some valuable time.

I always manage to poop into the toilet. It might be the only thing I consistently get right. SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF, AT LAST!"
Metafilter: overachieving in baby steps.

How about a "Not Happening" flag so that it can be brought to the mods' attention most painlessly?
posted by schmod at 9:15 PM on November 9, 2011

I'm not sure a flag is right because whose call is it to make? Someone reading the thread might decide that it's not happening, but a few others haven't decided that yet. Most of these seem to fade away without any involvement from anyone, including the OP. There's never a point where there's a decision made.
I changed the IRL "proposed meetups" list on the sidebar to show proposed events for one month instead of two. So one month is the longest time someone will see a proposed meetup in the sidebar.

Can we take a moment to grumble that moving meetups to IRL from MeTa has basically killed the meetups here in LA?

Yeah, I hadn't made the connection before, but meetup numbers have cratered in Iceland too, since meetups moved to IRL.

When I say cratered, I mean that before the move you'd get 4-6 people, now it's more like 2-3.
