Could we add Glitch to the profile social apps? There's already a MetaFilter group there and there are a lot of social aspects to the game. The more people you know in the game, the more fun it is. Thanks!

My 6 year old son was VERY interested to try this, but it required a version of Flash higher than what's available on Linux. The only site I've seen to do that in quite a few years. :(

It's not suggested for anyone under 14. There are a few...ahem...ribald aspects to it. All cartoonish, though.

Just kidding. I just added it.

You'll need to find your Glitch URL ID to add it. Visit your glitch profile and take a look at the URL in your browser address bar. Here's what it looks like:

http://www.glitch.com/profiles/PUVRH0T8ICE28JA/

Copy everything after /profiles/ and before the closing /. That long alphanumeric string is your Glitch URL ID. Copy that here into your profile and you should be set. Then watch this space for other Glitchers.

Glitch is very sweet and very cute and the art and incidental music are exquisite. And I get a little thrill of relaxation whenever I pet a tree and hear its grateful sigh. and you can become a no-no dealer and make a lot of currants from auctions and that is a weirdly rewarding feeling.

So what's Glitch like, anyone?
It's like a multiplayer, sidescrolling harvest moon/animal crossing thing. If you like achievements at all, it gets its hooks deep into you early on because at the beginning you can't do anything for more than 10 minutes without inadvertently tripping over one. And you're given in-game rewards (xp/money/crafting recipes) for getting achievements too.

I had been meaning to make a post about Glitch, but TOO BUSY PLAYING.

Pretty sure my character has been naked for a while now, and besides the websense is preventing me from linking to him here at work, so just know that a wild, naked man named Tristram is wandering alone somewhere in Glitch with a bag full of cherries and dwindling inhibitions.

This is my first foray into any sort of gaming like this, and I think I'm doing it wrong. I finally got a pick but by the time that happened I was so far away from any rock I couldn't use it. Why don't shrines want game show tickets?

Being a noob is tiring, sigh.

Solomon: " Do specific shrines prefer specific items?"

Not really, but gemstones and music blocks are really good for lots of points.
posted by IndigoRain at 3:21 PM on October 22, 2011 [1 favorite]

i found that the shrines associated with cooking are more impressed with complicated food, likewise, mining shrines seem to like mined/crafted metal things.

but beyond that, yeah, gems and musicblocks. i only donate dupes, though.

a few tips that i learned too late:
once you buy a house, you can keep bags in the cabinet.
spinach not only makes you jump high but run fast (useful for the desert)
set a destination on your map, if you hit the arrow, you'll automatically walk to the next street (as long as no jumping is not involved in getting to the next street)
eat hearty food in the wintery place to not lose energy
hug your bear every day
posted by nadawi at 3:32 PM on October 22, 2011 [3 favorites]

If you learn how to make Fairly Hallowed Shrine Powder or Extremely Hallowed Shrine Powder (or buy them from an auction, or find them in dust traps in Baqala/Choru/Zhambu/Xalanga), and sprinkle it over a shrine before you donate, the experience and favour you get for the item you donate will be doubled or tripled. There's a limit to the amount of experience you can get per game day from donating items, but this is a pretty good way to rack up a lot of experience and favour in fairly short order. Now that you can cash in giant emblems to take time off skills you're learning, this is also a good way to deal with those that take forever to learn.

Re storage in your house: you can also just dump stuff on the floor! Your house will look messy, but it is handy to be able to just leave things if you're heading off to mine or something.

I added all of you and got a badge for my trouble. Excellent.
posted by bewilderbeast at 3:37 PM on October 22, 2011 [2 favorites]

all my herb/flower seeds are on my floor. you can drop them on top of each other to take up not very much floor space.

just don't drop food where your pig can get to it. they will eat it.

We're pretty firm on the "No betas" policy for the social stuff but we're a little more loosey goosey on the "add it to the wiki" aspect, but that's entirely in pb's wheelhouse, so if he wants middle of the night pings from just-out-of-beta folks clamoring to add something, that's his choice.

I'm not keen to give up my spot in Groddle Meadow as there is a kind of old-timer prestige to having it (Groddle being the only initial spawn location during beta). Also Groddle Meadow boasts proximity to both Shimla Mirch and Ix and a relatively high population of pigs.

But there are plans for group owned spaces. I'd totally be down for that.

There are a whole bunch of more expensive houses for sale now (or at least half an hour ago when I was looking). There were also a bunch of more varied lesser priced houses (15-30K) for a short while, presumably as people sold of theirs to trade up, but they went pretty fast.

I'm not sure I like having a house. I feel kind of tied to it and am not wandering as much as I was. I'm learning the teleportation skills now which hopefully will help with that.

This game is both terribly boring and horribly addictive. I'm glad it didn't come out last year or I may not have completed my PhD.

I'd also be down for a MeFi co-op.

Also if any Glitch devs are reading this and have any pull, it would be sweet to have hybrid crop/herb gardens instead of just one or the other. Or come up with gardening pots or something where you can plant a single crop or herb.

Clearly the get-ourselves-banned hackaround solution to the coop thing is to have a robotic player who just sits inside a house all day long and automatically answers knocks on the door from folks whitelisted as known-good mefite glitches. Everybody stores their extra stuff in there, the whole give-some/take-some thing, and we make sure to restock the robot with steaks so it can eat all day and not die.

Cortex, I spent five minutes yesterday explaining to TheDonF my current conundrum: I saved up 50K currants to buy a big fancy house, but now am feeling attached to my little woodsy house (even if the 10 piggies and 6 butterflies and 1 chicken I have get in the way when I'm trying to harvest my zucchini) and I wonder if any expensive but woodsy houses will ever go on the market... when I could feel him staring at me. "That's... a tough one, baby," he said.

I also am concerned about what will happen when I'm in Germany/England for ten days. Will my animals and plants be okay?

Oh, also, ericost made a Plate of Beans item and thus has earned an intangible Golden Bean award.

You are getting ALL THE TROPHIES. You know who gets trophies? Winners. That's what you're doing: you're winning at life.

Both of those countries have internet, you know. IT's possible the electrons from glitch will stretch all the way over there, but maybe you should just check when you get there...

/instills seed to ruin your trip as you never go outside the whole time

me :)

Specklet... If you have an animal pen (so one of the fancy schmancy modern homes) all you need is enough feeders to hold 60 veggies for each animal (1 food * 6 game days *10 real days). If you don't - they'll nibble off your trees and should be ok I think. If you need feeders, I can lend you two. Ping me ingame. I'm there. A lot.

I joined as Theora55, but have not had time to play because real life has been interesting. That can't last.

I thought I might like this game after reading about it here.

I was pretty sure I'd like this game after watching the preview video.

I started to like this game after playing it for an hour.

But then I didn't realize what would happen if you spent too much time in a freezing cold area and ignoring the message that I should eat something hearty and not paying attention to my energy and mood levels.

Then I ended up in hell.

That's when I skipped straight from like to love.

I'm LogopolisMike there.

<~~~ If that turned out as a real link, then it's me, SweetTea Biscuit. I"m feeling particularly thick today as I can't remember how to link and I can't do anything but walk around aimlessly in Glitch petting stray pigs and squeezing chickens. And people keep coming up and staring at me and I don't know what they want me to do, so it makes me nervous. And last night someone did something to me and a rainbow appeared, does that mean I've been sexed?

the staring is either a coincidence- they were running, remembered they wanted to reorganize their inventory or eat or whatever and you happen to be there - or, they are checking your level. when i see someone under a level 10, i usually give them some higher level food or a gem or something.

the rainbow is "random kindness" they are given out like candy at the higher levels and we can run around and "bestow" them on people. i random kindness anyone i mine with if it's not a huge group. i also just sort of toss them around. while running through the world squeezing chickens.
