Then is a close thread a close thread? September 22, 2011 9:21 AM Subscribe
Has anyone ever got in after a Jessamyn/Cortex "I'll close this up" comment...?
What I mean is, is how does the closing thing work? Does someone announce they're closing the thread then go find the button? Or hit the button and then sneakily add their intention to close it after it's already gone? Or do mods have a "close this thing" button next to their comment box?

I'm pretty sure one of the mods said that they were able to comment in closed threads, so it usually goes: close -> comment about closing.
Also, this thread is going to have so many people pretending to close it up.

It's difficult for mods to comment in closed threads. So the process is usually: 1.) comment about closing. 2.) close the post. Only MetaTalk and IRL threads can be closed by a mod.
I'm sure a comment has snuck in under the wire here and there. There's probably only a few seconds between commenting and closing in most cases.

It has only ever happened a couple times, as far as I can recall. We pretty much leave a comment, let the page reload, jump to the top and hit close, so the window is pretty small. You could probably hunt for this with the Infodump by looking for metatalk threads with the closed flag set and a non-mod with the last comment.
I can recall one occasion where someone was being a jerk and I removed their post-closure-statement comment that they snuck in, and I deleted it, and they sent my shitty mefimail about it, but that whole thing was a weird jerk patrol sort of situation so it was mostly of a piece with the rest of it.

No it is not a hellban. It's contextually appropriate. It lets you type really long comments and then when you try to post them it says the thread closed five seconds before you hit "post." You're only banned for comments that take longer than ten minutes to type.

Indeed. I ran a query to look for metatalk threads which have been closed (or closed and deleted) and where the last user to comment is not one of mathowie, pb, jessamyn, cortex, vacapinta, or restless_nomad.
And I came up with 265 such threads. (I think that is way, way to many to post a list of them here, so I put them on my Infodump datawankery page instead.)
None of them have your userid as the last commenter, burnmp3s.

I've never had time to play with the infodump, but is there a way to filter it so it only includes MeTa threads where a moderator is within, say, 5 minutes or 2 or 3 comments of the end of the thread?

The Infodump is just a bunch of text files with data about site activity in them. For example, one has a list of metatalk posts, and another has a list of metatalk comments, and the latter has a 'postid' on every line that matches up with the 'postid' in the former. And there are timestamps on damn near everything.
So what you can do in terms of filtering and so on depends entirely on what tool you load these files into/run them through. For example if you have access to some kind of database and are fluent in SQL, then yeah, the kind of filtering you're asking about isn't too hard.
I'll give it a try when I get home tonight, unless one of the other usual suspects does it first.

I'm disappointed that you have to do this within the user interface at all. I've always pictured it as an over-sized red button--about 4 inches in diameter--next to a mod's computer that they just punch with the side of their closed fist. And then there is a "wah-wah-wah" sad trombone sound.
Because that would be cooler.

The fun part is this would be easy to do. A simple hack to a mouse driver and a weird key mapping to the close button would be all it would take.
What would be even cooler would be if the red box (do closings get those?) also autoplayed the sound. Then everyone would be in on the awesomeness.

Ok, here's a new list that looks a bit closer to the mark. This is closed threads where the last comment is 1) from a non-mod, and 2) not more than 60 seconds after the latest comment from a mod.
The actual time when the thread was closed isn't in the Infodump, so this seems like about as close as one can get to "attempt to post a final comment, then close the thread, but somebody snuck in at the last minute" using the dump.
Only 35 threads, so here they are:

I would think the apparent correlation with disabled accounts isn't a coincidence. The hypothesis there would be that closed threads in general would tend to be more fighty than average, so are more likely to be the type of thing that leads someone to push the big red button. And closed threads where somebody sneaks in at the last minute, like we are looking at here, are probably even more like that overall.

Maybe I'm talking out of school here, but FishBike actually had his license to wizen suspended in three states after a mishap with some statistical analysis and the daughter of a junior Senator. So, strictly speaking, he's not, though the time travel thing does pretty nicely mitigate the punitive effect of temporary bars from legalized practice.

The infodump is at http://stuff.metafilter.com/infodump
The "disabled" flag is not one of the data items provided in the dump, however, so we can't get that directly. And not everybody who leaves the site disables their account anyway.
The last time I remember talking about this was in December 2009 and I made a comment that links to a graph that tries to get at this in kind of a roundabout way. Since that was nearly two years ago, it might be neat to refresh that one.
I sort of can't believe it was that long ago.
