I'm here to defend zarq's alleged double and the deleted Waffle House post.
It is not a big deal at all, and I always support the mods, but I was excited to read the discussion on this one.
The old post was a one-link post about how FEMA is getting better. zarq's post was almost totally focused on Waffle House's own crisis management strategy, and had a number of related links. The only overlap was the intro to the WSJ story that noted FEMA's "Waffle House Index."
I read this article yesterday and was fascinated by it. Basically, the company has made it their personal mission that they will be the last ones closed and the first ones open in a natural disaster. They spend a lot of money bringing in outside resources (including their mobile command center and managers from other states) to make sure of it, and after Katrina they developed a whole protocol of what limited items to offer and how to cook them when you have some combination (but not all) of gas/electric/ice/generator power. That's pretty great.
The article says that their sales can be 300% higher after a disaster, but their costs in generators, extra labor, lodging, etc. are almost always equal to or more than that. They have just made the corporate decision that it is good for the company to be counted on as a reliable meeting place/taste of normalcy when a disaster hits.

Yeah, it's boarderline, but I'm inclined to agree. I think if the links were arranged differently with "(previously)" next to the FEMA one, it wouldn't have gotten flagged as a double and would have been fine.

I would have clicked on a thread about waffle house but probably not a thread about Hurricane Irene. So I'm glad you came to MeTa, anyway, because I found out about the Waffle House policy, which is darned interesting.

I didn't do my due diligence in researching previouslies, and totally should have. The Waffle House aspect of the previous post was discussed pretty extensively then, and that was only four months ago.
Now if you'll all excuse me, I must go back to finding links for what will no doubt be an epic post about Bill Nye the Science Guy. :D

Plus, we don't just whine on MeTa, we fume, gripe, and moan, too. And about all sorts of other things, not just deletions.
There's posts that didn't get deleted, posts that have pictures of cats in them and some people don't like cats, and links to kinds of music some people don't like either, like the other people don't like cats.
And some commenter called another commenter a bad name. And the other commenter kept commenting after the one commenter called him the bad name.
And pb needs fix something on the site because somebody's cell phone isn't working.
And there this [+] at the end of people's comments, and some people don't like the [+] thing. And pb made it so you can make the [+] thing go away, but it still not Ok because even if make the [+] thing go away, other people can still can still see the [+] thing.
We talk about all kinds things on MeTa.
And we make fun of people too!

Merely here to say that I for one am not willing to try to improve on any of zarq's posts -- though would love to see this one go back up with the previously links in place for the prior discussion (and Miko's old post!) How about it, zarq man?

It'd make more sense to consider leaving it if the Waffle House thing had been ignored in the original post, but at a glance it looks like people talked about it a whole bunch in the original thread, which makes this more of a double in spirit than it otherwise might have been.
I appreciated the second FPP because in the first one, the Waffle House part was actually just a passing reference in the article that wasn't really explained in much depth. I even did some searches back then to see if there were any other references to the Waffle House Index with more details but there wasn't much out there. There were some nice comments in the first post like The Giant Squid's but the article that is the main focus of the new FPP was really what I was looking for back then, so I'm glad it was posted.

Why? They've shifted the burden of tax compliance from themselves to their employees. I bet the accountants at Waffle House corporate HQ have some of the easiest jobs in the business.
(The best thing to order at Waffle House is a patty melt and a side of hash browns scattered smothered and burnt. They never cook the hash brown crispy enough.)

I'd like to learn more about Waffle House. Maybe if the next post can focus more on it, rather than the FEMA thing. Waffle House is an interesting institution around that part of the U.S. It is one of the clearest markers when you are winding your way across highways that you have entered into that part of the country; Waffle Houses, and maybe Churches of Christ.

Best thing to order at Waffle House: Cheese 'n' Eggs, with bacon, grits, and side of hashbrowns, scattered smothered and covered. Second best thing, any kind of egg sandwich, with hashbrowns scattered smother and covered. Third best thing, pecan waffle with hashbrowns scattered, smothered and covered. Get the idea?
There might be something decent on the wrong/dinner side of the menu, I don't know, I never look there.

I just realized that I have a very vivid childhood memory of going to the Waffle House where my family were regulars in my Halloween costume and being doted on by a couple of the waitresses. That's a memory that makes a lot of sense in some ways and not a lot in others.

I always thought that the Waffle House Index referred to the way that you can tell how Southern a town is based on the number of WH per capita. For example, Texas is a transition state between the southwest, the midwest, and the South, so it can be confusing when traveling, which parts are more Southwest and which are more Southern.
But if you look at the number of Waffle Houses, San Antonio (population ~1.5 million) has none, while Houston (pop ~2 million) has 10. Houston is infinitely more southern than San Antonio.
Dallas-Ft. Worth has 16 waffle houses, but a population of over 6 million. So Houston's WHI is .005 (waffle houses per thousand residents) while Dallas's is a puny .0026. DFW is half as southern as Houston.
I spend way too many road trips thinking about this.

I was greatly disappointed that we did not dine at a Waffle House when I drove cross-country. I did see a soda machine with Faygo in it, though, and that was really southern enough for me.

My then-girlfriend and I were driving back to Massachusetts from Atlanta after DragonCon one year. I can't remember where we stopped, some little town in South Carolina or something, but it'd been a few hours in the car and we were hungry, so Waffle House it was. It was delicious.
Then we finished our meal, went out to the car, and discovered that she had locked the keys in the car. Awesome. We went back into the Waffle House, ordered some more coffee, and sat there for another 8-9 hours while we waited for AAA to figure out whether or not they really felt like sending us a tow truck.
The waitstaff was very nice and accommodating, they gave us a bunch of free stuff while we were sitting around. After about hour 2, one of the waitresses came over and asked us if we wanted her to call her boyfriend, who had a jimmy in his car. Of course, we said, and so he wandered by about half an hour later and tried unsuccessfully to unlock the door.
Small towns, man, sometimes they're awesome. Within the next hour, it seems like every man and woman in this town started driving by the Waffle House to find us and offer to help. I've never seen so many arcane lock-picking tools in my life. They busted up the lock pretty good trying to help, but it was still really nice of them, and everyone was super friendly.
At least, until the tow truck finally showed up, late into the night. I don't think that guy was expecting half a town to be almost literally in line, waiting to give this guy a piece of their mind for making us sit there for so long. He had to fight his way through a bunch of cranky waitresses to get to the car, and then he had to jimmy the door while a bunch of snarky Southerners critiqued his every move. Hilarious.
They waved as we drove away. I love Waffle House.

I always thought my hometown was special, 4 Waffle Houses with about 50K - at one point there were 2 interstate exits with a WH on both sides of the interstate - now the WH are in the same places, but we've grown to 100K and not added any WH...

So does anyone else remember way back when Waffle House had a 24-hr. all-you-can-eat menu? For, like, $5.95 or something? Man...back when we were kids, unknowncommand and I would skip meals for the day in order to cram as many egg sandwiches, waffles, and orders of hash browns and into our bodies as possible. It was fantastic.

The Waffle House Index proposed by muddgirl is skewed in Texas by the large number of Dairy Queens there. It seems like even the smallest towns have at least 2, one on the right side of the highway coming into town and one on the left leaving town.

the rocky horror cast i was a part of (small furry animals with duct tape, represent!) always went to waffle house after the show. which is to say, i've been kicked out of waffle house a lot.

There is kind of an index for neighborhoods in New York. Duane Reade index, they move in to a neighborhood on an upswing, when there is enough money to be made to justify it but the retain rents aren't obscene yet. Did you know that Duane Reade is named after the corner where the first store was? The corner of Duane and Reade street.

btw, I once lived within walking distance of the original Waffle House location in Avondale Estates. The first structure is long gone, but the location has always been a WH since. One of the few places inside 285 where you can walk at 2:30 in the morning with almost no fear. /cue 'red light violations' flame war

Waffle House Museum. I get my car serviced near there and always forget to stop by.
I may be the only person in the universe-where-Waffle-Houses-exist that never orders her hash browns smothered. The onions are always a little too close to "heated but still mostly raw" for my liking.

Yeah its Pennsyltucky and I guess Philadelphia just isn't southern enough because I just found out we have no Waffle Houses here. Pretty devastating turn of events.

When my mother-in-law visited from Ontario, it was her first trip to the Deep South and I think there was a part of her who genuinely expected to see shotgun-totin' hayseeds in overalls drinking moonshine out of clay jugs with "XXX" scrawled on the sides.
So we tried to show her more positive things and took her to museums and snooty restaurants and all that. For a pretty crappy town, there's a plethora of good restaurants, and she enjoyed herself immensely, I think.
Then one night (we're night owls) we got restless and decided that we'd show her the Real Southern Experience and we went to Waffle House.
She LOVED IT. LOVED IT. LOVED IT. She was charmed by the talkative waitress who called her "Sugar"; she was fascinated by the skill, speed, and dexterity of the cook; she was amused by the loud drunks at the counter who were already arguing about college football though the season was months away. She ate every bite of her eggs and hash browns and ordered pecan pie (warmed on the grill with a pat of butter on an ice cube, the Waffle House Way). She couldn't stop talking about it. She had driven down, and she sent Liz a regretful text on her way back when she realized there were no more Waffle Houses between her and home.
For her birthday, we sent her two Waffle House mugs. She was delighted, and emailed us pics of her and her friend drinking coffee from them.
Waffle House: everyone likes it!

There is a Pannenkoekenhuis chain in MN
The main Pannekoeken Huis chain went belly-up several years ago, but a few of the local franchisees continued in business under the name for a while afterwards. Any of them still around? A little googling has a late-1990s bankruptcy for the corporate organization, but I remember eating at the one in St Louis Park as late as 2005, 2006 or so. They tended to be in highway locations with a lot of sign clutter, so I may have driven past them without noticing.
Concept was a mostly breakfast restaurant with lotsa kitschy "Dutch" trappings: windmills, wooden shoes, Delft china blue/white color schemes, all laden on thick and syrupy. I've been told that at one point, if you ordered the namesake item, waitresses would make a big production out of delivering it hot to your table: "Pannekoeken!! Pannekoeken!!", although they never did that the few times I was there.
I remember the "metworst" sausage they offered as a specialty was okay.

In Minneapolis, we are closer to Tim Horton's in Fort Frances, ON than we are to the nearest Waffle House in the Kansas City suburbs. Five hour drive for the former, almost seven for the latter, per Google Maps.

My buddy Dave and I had both spent a not insignificant part of our lives in Pittsburgh, which is part of why, I think, we became fast friends when we met in NYC, a year or so after I moved there from Pittsburgh.
My sister was in nursing school in PGH and it was late in the NFL season of one of the recent years that the Steelers were on a super-bowl winning streak - I think it was the Bus' last year. Dave and I decided to find some tickets to the Steelers-Browns game and drive down for a long weekend of partying at night with my sister and her friends, and then the game. The whole drive down, Dave and I were joking about girls from "Pennsyltucky."
Well, sure enough, we end up out one night late and Dave's flirting with a friend of my sister's and we all end up at some diner where I finally spill the beans to this PGH native that Dave thinks she's from Pennsyltucky. That was the end of that.
