can't click - no time - want mouseover August 30, 2011 8:01 PM   Subscribe

Pony request: mouseover that shows who favorited a favorited comment. As opposed to having to click through to a list.
posted by flapjax at midnite to Feature Requests at 8:01 PM (127 comments total) 10 users marked this as a favorite

What happens if a comment has like 200 favorites? I only ask because this happens so often to me and I could see how that might be inconvenient.

YES! I want this so bad! I've only hesitated to bring it up because of 1) the inevitable GRAR DON'T EVEN LOOK AT FAVORITES THE INTERNET IS NOT A CONTEST crap that comes up and 2) facebook does it and we're too hip for something like that.

But yes, I like this idea so much. Not necessarily the whole list of folks when there are, like, 40 favorites, but the first one or two would be awesome.

(I like to see who favorites what things because it gives me an idea as to different users' personalities, and I think that's a good thing.)

Pony Finessed: A clickable linked list? or just a list... because if you're trying to figure out a congruity in users that favorited something or whatever, the separate page lets you troll (fishing sense) through the list more easily.

I agree it would be lame to just stick it in a hidden div or something. Add a REST API to check favorites on a comment, return JSON, then I write the dashboard app I have been dreaming of so I can watch my favorites in realtime. Then you can use the same API when someone mouses over a favorite count.

Honestly, this really does feel like a "just click on the dang link when you need to know who favorited something" situation to me. Anybody who needs to do in-depth analysis of favoriting can spend some time with the Infodump; short of that, if you're checking so often that a clickthrough is a burden, you may just be checking too often.

Shouldn't be too hard since sanko and I already did all the work, the dev just needs to type it in. Can we see a POC next week? And schedule a roll to production the week after?

In the flow of debate, a favorite between interlocutors (as opposed to observers) usually denotes an extension of opinion. Such favorites help round out individual positions into group positions. As long as they're sequestered from the conversation by impracticability, that information is lost.

I feel that enabling even speedier access to who favorited your stuff is likely to make people talk about favorites and the meaning of who favorited what and why more than they already do, and already this is happening too much. There are many people who enjoy a MeFi that isn't constantly focused on favorites and many people who like them a lot. There is an unsteady tension between these groups of people. I personally would prefer to not build in any more things that enable more attention to favorites than the site already has. I feel that spending mod time on this implies certain things about how important we feel favorites are to how MeFi operates that are not true. I'm aware that this may just make me a huge grumpus, but you asked specifically what I think and that is pretty much it.

So is the objection to this pony request: (1) that it's not worth spending time coding/devoting server resources for something that is too minimal a need; (2) that not having this feature minimizes unwanted behavior (i.e., over-checking); (3) some combination of both; or (4) something else?

Number three, pretty much, with more focus on the second issue than the first. Jessamyn's explication upthread covers the bases well: the tension brought on by "let's have more enabling of talking/thinking about favorites vs. talking/thinking about conversation itself" is not, pure and good and enthusiastic intentions notwithstanding, something we really want to aim for. There's not really a need for even-more-speedy access to favoriting details; they're plenty accessible right now, very much so for any need that isn't premised on focusing way more regularly on Who Favorited That than we want people to be doing.

For the folks who really, really can't live without this feature, third-party scripting is a possible (and, it sounds like, actually realized) solution, so as with most ponies we've blinded it's more an issue of doing some more work yourself on the client side than being totally unable to get the feature you want.

Let's just make favorites private.

Thy have been tinkering with the upvotes on hacker news. Comments are still sorted by upvote, and if a comment is downvoted the text color changes slightly to a lighter color so it gradually if fades into the background color.

But you can only see the upvotes on your own comments. So I never know if I need to upvote something to keep it from fading into the background color. It is a mind fuck. So I never bother to upvote anything.

I only have like 200 karma over there, but I put blood sweat and tears into getting them.

You don't want to just appear in the Grumpus room. You have to figure out where the Grumpus is and fire from an adjacent room.
posted by homunculus at 11:48 PM on August 30, 2011

My first reaction to this is two-fold and mostly leans on the resources side of things.

- it's a pretty deep query to do on every single comment in a thread. Even if it only fired on mouseover, it would take a few seconds to pull data

- it would be seldom used and virtually invisible to almost every user on the site. A lot of server resources with very little upside

- logistically, it's actually pretty difficult to display the data. A tooltip cuts off after x characters in most browsers, making this only half-work for a lot of users. If instead of a standard title tooltip it was a div layer that displayed, we'd have window/viewing problems for anything with more than a handful of comments.

If you're interested in who favorited something, just load the link in a new background tab and glance over at it after a few seconds. It's just too much work to provide this seemingly easy and low-tech feature.

Howls of Outrage isn't working for me either, unfortunately (Chrome, Windows XP).

So, let me know. Seriously, this is one of the biggest problems for developers when writing simple scripts and extensions that they don't daily use themselves. The code typically deals with a static situation and tends to rot over time, plus the vast majority of users, past or potential, don't give error feedback. As a consequence, a problem can persist for weeks or months before the person who is (usually) the most familiar with the code and interested in fixing it twigs to the situation.

Bottom line: something that used to work doesn't, and you report it to the developer, you're a hero. Small 'h' limited-scope hero, but a hero nonetheless.

No guarantees after notice, of course. Hero rules still allow the developer to decline further effort.

Chrome, huh? Well, I still use the working GM version, mostly by virtue of never having bothered to disabled it, but looks like I'll have to fire Chrome back up for the site and see what's up. I do remember working around a quirk or two in Chrome to make the native extension work, hopefully that situation hasn't gotten worse. Well, at least it's not Safari, I think my developer certificate has expired.

Anyway, give me a day or three to get to it.
posted by mdevore at 12:34 AM on August 31, 2011 [5 favorites]

Instead of a mouse-over, what if the click through just doesn't navigate you away from the page? Like it brings up a little box with the info in it, but you remain on the page.

The main reason for the mouse-over suggestion would be to stay on the same page, so that should make that side happy. And it's as deep of a query as the current method is. There should be less server resources used for this actually, since the servers don't have to serve a whole additional page, just the bare facts.

Anyway, give me a day or three to get to it.

Sorry for the grar, flapjax. I guess I'm one of those on the other side of the "unsteady tension" when it comes to favorites. I'm gratified that if the mods refuse to consider any changes to the way favorites work in ways I consider positive (like making them private), they're also refusing to make enhancements in ways I consider negative.

Oh, and thanks for curing cancer. That was fast.

ponies we've blinded

I'm glad that didn't link to anything having to do with Equus. Here's some advice: if you hear Equus is playing near you, and you are interested in a play that provides a disturbing look into a twisted psyche, and that does interesting and unusual things with staging and the use of human actors to represent horses in a sexual context, by all means, go, enjoy. If you are interested in a play with boobies because you are a college freshman, THERE ARE BETTER WAYS.

Though 15 years later, I know at least three people (besides myself) who you can totally creep out by softly chanting "eeeeeeeeeeeq" near them. So there's that.

flapjax at midnite: "99But, now that it's clear that this pony ain't got no legs, and that cancer is cured and all, I'd just like to mention that... SHIT! Fourcheesemac disabled his account! His last site activity was on July 5. I just discovered that."

Yes. Over the discussion about the most recent Dawkins thread.

$("#FavoritesDialog").dialog({autoOpen:false});
$("#FavoritesDialog").dialog("open");
How about instead of a new page it's an inline popup when clicked?

So, this comes up every now and then. As (i think) the first person to ask for it, I like to keep track of the various responses. Here they are for the record!
2006!
2007!
2010!

And finally shot down again for the fourth time today.

For what its worth, the script that mdevore wrote works fine.

shot down again

Bang Bang.

That whole hovering over '7 favorites' to discover that '7 users marked this as a favorite' is indeed lame.

No interest in a mouseover favorites list, but seriously, wtf is with this existing feature?

I assumed it was for the voice programs used by visually impaired people?

I hope this doesn't become a thing here.

Isn't The Huge Grumpus one of The Muppets?

I don't know about that, but it would make an excellent title on a business card.

wtf is with this existing feature?

There was a time when "favorite" wasn't necessarily a known term across the Web. People new to MetaFilter still might not know what it means. By hovering they learn that site members took some sort of action to make that number what it is. "7 favorites" by itself doesn't tell you very much. You get a little extra info on hovering that helps explain it.

Sweet, thanks mdevore. I didn't get around to trying it the first time.

I want a mouseover to see who flagged a post. Because I'm keeping a list, man. I'm keeping a list.

I thought the mouseover for number of favorites was added after the Great Favorites Experiment led to the Show/Hide/Obscure favorites user options, so that people obscuring favorites could still see absolute counts if they wanted to.

nah, we've always had that link title text in there: "x user(s) marked this as favorite". I just checked some old code to verify.
posted by pb (staff) at 11:18 AM on August 31, 2011

Thanks, pb. I guess I just never really noticed it prior to that.

You know that ajax feature to show new comments? I want my screen to be covered with a modal box every time a favorite is made/lost, along with scrolling the comment thread to that specific comment.

that way I can enter an active political/religious thread and use it as my screensaver

pb, just a note that if the tool tip is meant to be instructional in nature you might clarify that "x members marked this as a favorite," to help non-member users intuit why they don't have access to a mechanism for assigning favorites. Not all users are members.
posted by Jeff Howard at 3:09 PM on August 31, 2011

True, but only members can update the site in any way. I get the distinction, but I think it's clear as is.
posted by pb (staff) at 3:21 PM on August 31, 2011

Everything is clear to the programmer doing the implementation. I don't particularly care about favorites and I'd never thought about this tool tip before now. It may not be important either way but please be aware of the bias that comes from knowing too much about how the code works. The phrase "I think it's clear as is" means almost nothing in that context. Something to watch out for, is all.

heh, in that context I also can't do my job. I understand what you're saying, but obviously I disagree or I would never weigh in on decisions like this. The final decision doesn't rest with me and that's good.

Howsabout a vote? I think you may be outnumbered in that opinion, is all.

You're fooling yourself! We're living in a dictatorship!
