To us privacy is binary: an app is either completely private or not. Glassboard is totally private. August 22, 2011 4:19 PM   Subscribe

Here is where I ask if Glassboard can be added to the list of social apps, and the mods say "No, because it doesn't have web-facing profile page", and then you tell me your email address and I invite you to my Mefite board.

Memail or email if you don't want to put your address in the thread

This is where we also might say that the normal process for requesting a site is adding it at the wiki. But it sounds like it doesn't have a public profile page so we won't be able to add it.

In this comment, I make a snarky comment about people with unsupported devices.

I was expecting the "Not another social network" gripe to arrive before the unsupported device complaint. Metafilter never fails to surprise!

So it's a private social network that's only accessible from smartphones?

How odd.

My interest is mainly goodwill due to NetNewsWire. Plus, it's not run by an advertising company.

What does this offer that Google+ huddles don't?

User privacy, apparently.

I did love NetNewsWire and then it had a few clunky neverfixed bugs and then I gave up on RSS. I'm in, but I'm rarely on my phone.

What does this offer that Google+ huddles don't?

The joy of needing neither a Google account, nor indeed an invite, the availability of such being encumbered so by a curiously prolonged bout of artificial scarcity.

(Why the florid talk? Just finished watching some Deadwood for the first time. Considerably worse: when you complete a marathon of The Wire and you catch yourself talking like a Baltimore homicide detective. Sheeeeeeeit!)

But, back on topic: I've signed up, but will have to wait for contacts to try it before I can test it properly. Is it just me, or does this seem like an attempt to grab a slice of the group chat market before iMessage arrives? I suppose its chief advantage would be cross-platform compatibility. It could do with a little bit of UI polish (the signup screen, for instance, seemed a touch basic, not that it really matters), but it looks like it could be put to all kinds of uses. I do wonder if everything's encrypted though (ordinarily I would assume so, but the website doesn't discuss the topic as far as I can tell).

is this something I would have to own a television to understand?

Please. Even us enemies of Dorothy heard of Grindr last year. I'm getting ass purely via Ajax requests nowadays. Hurts like hell, but the odds of disease are low and my rear has never been cleaner.

I'm checking all these new social thingummies out. I'm an early adopter but a questionable stayer.

How would you link to this at all? Let alone a profile page? Hard to even make this a request.

Hey all, Mister_A is now on Smoke Signals. If you want to get into my ellipse, go to a high place, start a fire, and send a Smoke Signal my way!

It's like a speakeasy. If you're cool, you don't even have to ask how: you just know.

Horselover Phattie: "What does this offer that Google+ huddles don't?"

A complete lack of a business plan, as far as I can tell.

Hate to burst the bubble of everyone who thinks this is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but Glassboard is a service, and services cost money to run, so how do you think this is getting paid for, in the long run? How quickly we forget the sage words of a fellow MeFite:

If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold.

Not a rant, but simply an undeniable truth. Businesses need money to operate, and goodwill is not a currency.

And the plan they've stated is paid accounts/upgrade. I don't know if that's viable to keep the lights on, but it's not fair to say they have no plan

So I join now for free, set it all up and looking nice, and then they say "Cough up or else bye bye profile." Is this right?

Sure, could be. Or it could shut down tomorrow. Or it could continue forever running on bitcoin donations from AnonOps.
