What's the deal with The Deck? How is MetaFilter/Matthowie compensated: is it just eyeballs-on-the-published-page or is there an incremental payment for click-thrus? I ask because I often see items that are sort of vaguely interesting, and I'd be a lot more inclined to click-thru if that were to result in additional revenue...

I think that the Matt's business plan isn't really any of our concern. If he needs our help, he'll let us know.

As I recall from when MeFi switched over to The Deck, they're supposed to be an ad group that's a bit more vetted and classy about how they run ads. This seems to be pretty true so far. That is, ads here are much better than they were a few years ago. I don't remember anything like the Suicide Girls debacle [1, 2, 3] since The Deck came to MeFi.

Looking at threads that old I'm always surprised at how many of the accounts are now disabled; apparently you can only last so long before flaming out or getting banned (or just fading away, I guess, but that sounds pretty boring; when I go it'll be suicide by mod). We've all got expiration dates stamped on our backs, like infantry officers in 1914.

There's no click through kickback, I just get paid a flat fee monthly for running the ads. I find them well targeted myself and have clicked through on a few iPhone apps and I noticed I actually use a backup service being advertised. So click stuff if you find it useful, but there's no need to generate fake clicks to try and raise revenue because that's not how it works.

Please don't. It's not nice to the mods, who don't get any fulfillment from a bannin' or dealing with whatever leads up to a bannin'. Not that I necessarily think you're serious, I'm just sayin.

I like the ads from The Deck because they're well-designed and just intriguing enough to get me to click through pretty often, even if it's likely that I'd probably never use the thing being advertised; I've still learned about cool stuff that I've mentioned to friends who might find them useful. Metafilter is the only site I visit regularly where AdBlock is disabled entirely.

Thanks, matt. I apologize if the question was dicey - I didn't mean to appear to be snooping around in your finances or the business plan of the site, I was simple asking if the arrangement was flat fee or click-based. The Deck ads DO appear to be well-targeted for the MeFi demo; I'll just keep following the ones that are interesting.

I was actually talking about the thread from 2005, so wander on back, old-timer. Although 2010 is pre-Villanelles so looking at that gives me the same feeling of unreality I get seeing pictures of my parents before I was born.

Back to the original question, I don't know about the rest of you, but I avoid looking at Internet adverts like I would avoid a plague!
I liked mathowie's explanation. I might actually start looking at The Deck now. Not all advertising is annoying and evil, it turns out.

when Mozy went teh crap last year, I went to Crash Plan courtesy of recommendations of Mefites and used the Deck link since I figured MeFi should benefit if I'm purchasing based on advice I got here. As Matt says, don't click unless it's of interest to you though.

I often see my favorite app of all time (OmniFocus) and my alma mater (Parsons Design & Technology) in the ads and I get really happy. I really like the Deck ads.

I never use adblock, personally. Not a moral issue or anything, I just don't spend any significant amount of time at sites that use obnoxious advertising so it's basically a non-issue.
