Why is the MetaTalk front page so much shorter than the MetaFilter front page? June 23, 2011 1:15 PM   Subscribe

How come there are so many more MetaFilter FPPs on the first page vs so few on MetaTalk's first page?

Currently, I can read 50 posts on MeFi's blue front page before I have to hit "older posts," whereas there are only 10 on MetaTalk. Is this a setting I can change for myself, or is it configured this way for a specific reason?

Huh? If you upgrade to the paid version, you have as many posts as you want, along with images.

I am all for the shorter MeTa front page--I like to think it keeps GRAR issues from being on the forefront of GRAR-prone users' minds for too long.

I think we went with shorter to let fighty or controversial actually die after a day or two instead of being on the front page forever and having to rehash things out. MetaTalk threads work ideally over short periods of time, the longer they go, the more likely they are to get people nitpicking with one another.

Can't find the thread but once mathowie dialed it up to 11 and the internet broke.

Yeah, the full version of MetaFilter is pretty awesome. You get access to GuessMe, IRL Elite, and Jobs unlocks all the secret chocolate/fireworks/puppy factory work that come up surprisingly often.

God damn you griphus my dad died in a chocolate fireworks puppy explosion.

The answer, anyway, tzikeh, is that once the basic question in a Metatalk thread gets answered the thread tends to get very silly. This effect sometimes sets in faster than others...

Ah, okay. Fighty moving away from the front page, I get.

The reason I had the question was that the music exchange post moved off the main page so quickly, and I was wondering why that was as I was really enjoying the thread. But it makes sense to move things along quickly, since a lot of MeTa threads get fighty.

Ah, see, but, IMO of course, that to be a feature rather than a bug. I really enjoy it when MeFites get goofy, because we do have a lot of intense conversation here, so it's nice to see the names I know (and the ones I don't) be silly. (Though I understand that recipes are verboten now.)

Heh, I've asked the mods about this in the past (long, long ago) for exactly the same reason, tzikeh. It's why I try to post the MeFiSwap* announcement threads just before a weekend—usually MeTa is much, much slower on the weekends and a post will likely have 4 or so days of exposure on the front page. Given the subject of so many MeTas is grar-based and/or quickly resolved, pretty much in every other case it makes sense to have the threads go out of sight and out of mind, so, you know, so it goes.

*Signups are still open! Here's a link to the thread! Email me!

posted by Brandon Blatcher at 2:11 PM on June 23, 2011

Yeah, part of the issue is that the grey is so much lower volume in terms of posts that ten threads will usually be three or four days worth of posts, vs the maybe one and a half days worth of posts from the fifty on the blue. Two weeks of shelf life for any given thread means more chances for goofiness but, more notably, more chances for angry flameups.
posted by cortex (staff) at 2:11 PM on June 23, 2011

Ten posts on Metatalk is way too many, and fifty front-page posts isn't nearly enough.

This seems like the question about when one should post their Ask MetaFilter question to maximize response—moving off the page slowly happens because fewer people are around to interact with it.

At work today, we got started talking about who had done work in phone banks. Four out of ten public-library employees (though two of those are college students who have never had non-library jobs in their lives).

Tracey told a story about cold-calling people to sell them extended warranties. Two of us had called people for our college alumni associations. I got to tell my story about how, when I was in high school, several of my friends and I unknowingly raised money for a fake heart charity that got shut down by the FBI.

Some real good bonding, there.
