No place like Metafilter June 8, 2011 12:21 PM   Subscribe

Should there, can there, must there be an AirBNB Metafilter Group?

While planning a month long trip to LA this summer, I've discovered Airbnb, a site in which users can post and access vacation and short term housing all over the place from living room couches to apartments to whole islands. It is pretty sweet and cheap.

The Mefi community is tight-knit, trustworthy and lives all over the world. If we pool our resources we may never have to worry about staying with someone who doesn't get our in-jokes ever again. I mean if Hacker News has one...why shouldn't we?

Are people using that site? Do people have places for rent on there? I guess to form a group we have to suggest it on the groups page, so let's do that and found the group and so on and so forth.

I know there is a Couchsurfing group already, but this is more for facilitating responsible rental business transactions rather than spreading bedbugs (jkjk!!!!)

I know of at least two MeFite on AirBNB. I am not on it, but think it is a good idea.

I use it, I know two other MeFites who do. I think setting up a group there is a good idea.

When speicus and I were trying to figure out our Boston lodgings we looked at listings on airbnb. Some of the listings were....interesting. Once we discovered a mefite on there it made the whole process a little less ohnoes what are we getting ourselves into.

Sounds good. tight-knit, trustworthy and lives all over the world is a selling point so to speak. It makes the service more trusted. But will there be a link here to there and if so, were to place it. for example tuck a little link/sentence explanation inside meet-ups?

I keep almost unfollowing them on Twitter because reading about all the cool places people are going makes me jealous and sad that we never fucking go anywhere anymore.
But I love the idea of it. We stayed in some apartment in Rome that we found on the internet many years ago and it was great so I can't even imagine how much more awesome this kind of thing is now.
Also, if I recall correctly there was a big kerfuffle a few weeks ago because Ashton Kutcher is on their board now or something like that, and everyone was convinced it would be the downfall of the sort of "indie spirit" of AirBnB.

Anyhow, I'd join a Metafilter group for sure, and then be all jealous of everyone...

I'd join a MetaFilter group for sure. My friend just pointed this service out to me and I have a spare bedroom in Los Angeles.. so this has to be more than a coincidence, right?

I suggested a MeFi group but I'm not really sure what's involved at this point. It's nearly a social site, maybe we can find a way to add it there...

Yeah I'm not really sure what else is needed. I guess we just keep suggesting it until they notice? Maybe I'll drop them a line in the official contact form as well.

I'm just about to head out for an Airbnb stay in a couple weeks! Can't wait. This sounds like a great plan.
