The IRL meetup for Glasgow i'm proposing won't accept real, actual addresses.
I've tried putting the Louden Tavern into it and used the addy given by google maps but it's not happening - is there a way just to bypass the google maps bit ?

While we're discussing this, why doesn't the address show up in cases such as this one? All I see is the location name and the map.

There's no way to bypass the map requirement because we don't want to send people out into the world without a verified address in hand.
I rather suspect that people living in the city where the meetup was being proposed would be a better source of verifcation than google, no ?

I think the address in question is 22 Harvie Street, Glasgow G51 1BW, United Kingdom, from the googling of it anyway.

Thanks mrzarquon. If I plug that address into IRL it brings up the map. If I put in "22 Harvie St, Glasgow" that works fine too. But if you don't include the city or just use a venue name it won't work.

How is the restriction of the information that I input, help ?
The implication that someone in Palo Alto, California would know Glasgow better than jack_mo, len, bftgog, fire and wings etc is strange.
If I want to challenge that, I will.
If you don't like that, fine but please don't try and bully me into whatever bland, passive acceptance mode you think counts as good behaviour here.

You're free to challenge our use of Google Maps, but it should work fine for the scenario you mentioned in your post. Maybe you had a typo in the address, I don't know. You won't tell me what you were entering that didn't work for you so I can only speculate.
IRL is a site for public meetups. We want to tie meetups to a specific real world location so we don't get into a situation where we have semi-public meetups. If you're in the know you get to go, if you're not you can't get there. So we want a spot on the map associated with meetups so anyone can attend and get directions.
We have had issues with Google Maps in the past and we've addressed them. In the first few months we had trouble with parks and intersections and odd points of interest, those now work. Occasionally someone has a problem with an address. They contact us and we work it out. The system isn't perfect but it works 99% of the time.

Away and lock yourself back in your basement, eagerly awaiting the day when people begin to discuss meetups in Glasgow with the same tone and gravitas one would address the allocation of lentil mushing duties in a 60's California commune.

So why didn't it work originally? Were you using a different address?
Maybe it should send out a bat single to the mods when people put in an address that Google can't find.

Google doesn't actually develop that data in house in Palo Alto. They buy it from local authorities.

You say no joy there either, but you had joy the first time around! Your first address worked fine. If I put in "171 Great Western Road, Glasgow" that works great for me.
What error message are you getting with these addresses?

That's not fair, the cuban. There could be something unique to his setup that is causing problems. There could be an error on our end that's causing things to work for me but not sgt.serenity. I'm trying to understand why these addresses aren't working when they're fine for me, I just need a bit more info.

Sorry sgt.serenity, I'm stumped. I've pored over the code, logged in as test users, tried several browsers and I just can't duplicate the problem. If I put the exact address "171 Great Western Road, Glasgow" in the "Venue Address" field while creating a new Confirmed Meetup event post at IRL, I get a map with a location and no error message.
My last ditch thought is that somehow that Venue Address field is being cleared out by your browser before you click submit. Are you running any Greasemonkey scripts? Try disabling them. If you can, try posting from another browser and see if that works better.

I can look into it, what's the address you're trying to use? You can send it via MeFi Mail if you don't want to share it here. The Google Maps API we're using can be picky about address formatting, but there's usually a way to make it work.
