I, for one, am extremely happy that post 100k was not a stunt. In fact, it's spectacular. Three cheers for zarq.

I'm kinda surprised there weren't several posts within a minute of #99999 going up. It's even more awesome for the site that the Epic Gachaman Post didn't have to compete with SLYTs and SLOEs...

I'm still waiting for the thank you note for my deleted posts which allowed this to 100,000 and not some meaningless number.... If it wasn't for me this would have been 100,128 . And, given the quality of this post, that would have been a shame...

No, a deleted post keeps its number. So if "posts" means extant (non-deleted) posts, then there have been significantly fewer than 100,000 posts.

On the other hand, 100,000 is just on metafilter.com. If you added AskMetafilter and other subsites, there would probably be more than 100,000 extant posts.

Of course, which was why I asked "what about 100,000 existing posts?" meaning "approximately how long until we reach that number?" I can't think of an easy way for someone like me to figure that out, or even figure out the number of non-deleted posts right now.

There's no way to know when we'll reach 100,000 existing posts. If we exclude deleted posts, the post with ID 100000 was post #91,931.

Yeah I saw that too, their claim, not mine. They're not used to overthinking, I bet.

[Like in a traditional Indonesian cookbook I have where the (modern) editor thinks that you can substitute Thai basil with parsley (which is like using burned eggplant when you're out of coffee) That's why I love MetaFilter, mistakes like that don't happen here.
I guess.]

So Zarq ... were you poised, waiting to make the post, refreshing constantly, and then swooped in as fast as you could, breathlessly frantic to make sure no one did it before you? The fact that the previous post was made in the same minute as yours would indicate that you were.

Interesting that the posts per year per active user must be dropping.

Depending on how you define "active user", of course. My guess is that posts per year per user for folks making posts in any given year is probably more likely about flat, once you account for slow turnover in the userbase as new people sign up and older users wander off.
