Pogo gets out of the house January 12, 2011 12:39 PM Subscribe
Metafilter musical favorite Pogo has a new idea. He wants to remix the world.
I'm sure in no small part thanks to his frequent appearances on the Blue, Pogo is moving on from remixing the cartoon past, to remixing the real world present. He's done one trip, to South Africa, already. His next trip is planned for Tibet. He's already raised more than enough money on his Kickstarter for this leg of the journey. I can think of a few musicians I'd love to send to places that have inspired me.

Oh. This isn't about the cartoon possum. Never mind.

It's hard to find much on Walt Kelly's Pogo today. Fantagraphics was supposed to start publishing collections, and then it quietly disappeared from their website, and I've been unable to find out what's happening there (inquiries to them were met with "OH HAI i've signed you up for our newsletter thx"). A pity, because I think Pogo is really, truly amazing. We had a couple of collections kicking around the house when I was a wee lad, and there was nothing weirder under the sun. I should get a tattoo of Churchy, come to think of it.

mkultra: ... and this is in Metatalk why?
MetaTalk and MetaFilter look similar on the professional white background? (Well, they both have "New Post" as an option, whereas the other sub-sites have different descriptors for new postings.)

Or, you know, I could go check the wikipedia article. Still, that's just the daily strips and it's the longer-form stuff I'm especially curious about.

Wow, he works for Pixar now? That's pretty neat.

Does one really "perform" a youtube video?
Is a video of a performance a performance?

If you're referring to the note that he "performed for YouTube Play at the Guggenheim Museum," check the Guggenheim Museum's PR for the event, or see the video. It looks like this is a debut of Pogo's video, but maybe he did some live VJ-type work.

Pretty sure I read something about him in the New York Review not that long ago. Let's see . . . oh, this is from 2002 on the publication(?) of a Fantagraphics collection. . . . And 2002 was 9 years ago. Oops.

There's a blue post to be built around all the new ways musicians, and other artistic types, have found to fund their creative endeavors. Or a post collecting all the artists that have gone from Youtube to 'real' fame. This is just an update to the many Pogo threads we've already had on the blue, imho.

I am tickled about how this got derailed into a plea for a Pogo Possum post... I'd love to see more on the web from Okefenokee Swamp, so I'll see what I can do, but it may take me a while; if anybody wants to beat me, feel free...

Yes please Pogo Possum post! And Fantagraphics had better come through for us sooner or later. Last I heard it was delayed because they wanted to make it an absolutely complete collection, and they were having trouble finding some of the old Sunday cartoons. I guess I'll have to treasure my 40-year old paperback printings until then.

That's why he changed his name. Pogo = the artist formerly known as Fagotron.

Not so formerly..."Fagotron" is still the name of his YouTube channel, which is pretty prominently displayed on the remix the world link.
