Hidden feature? June 21, 2010 1:39 PM Subscribe
Ok, so whenever I hit Ctrl+Shift+A anywhere on Metafilter, a little thing pops up saying "Please enter the site you'd like to link!" What? For what? Is this a feature I was never informed about? By the way, I'm running Ubuntu Lucid, with Firefox.
Oh cool! That's pretty nifty. But this also appears on pages where you can't make any comments, like the front page. Shouldn't this be disabled there?

There are keyboard shortcuts for that?! What other non-obvious Mefi keyboard shortcuts are there?

That is a little strange on the main pages. We can send links into the ether. Where do they go?

When you do it on Safari 5 on Windows, the browser thinks you're trying to Autofill a form and complains that there is no form.

Well, the javascript should load only on thread pages, but we might be loading it everywhere accidentially.
Other weird shortcut is the j/k keyboard navigation on all front pages and threads. Go on, try it out on a long thread.

Nifty! But Ctrl-Shift-T overlaps with Firefox's "Reopen Closed Tab" keyboard shortcut. Why not, say, Ctrl-Shift-I?

Ctrl+Shift+B also overlaps with Firefox; it opens the "Organize Bookmarks" window.

Yep, accidentally loading it everywhere. It should be working properly now.
Yeah, it's easy to get in an arms race with the various browser/OS/extension/software keyboard shortcuts. There are no safe choices. We've moved them to different keys over the years and it ends up a never ending shuffle.

I can manually type code faster than I can find those tiny little buttons.

Well -- yeah!!
So, are we talking fantasy fiction here or is there a way that does not involve blue and white nail polish and some very wonderful stencils?

Those little buttons are for babies! HTML is for kiddies! When I need to format something, I use a zero-day browser exploit to jump to hand-assembled custom-written machine code.

They become FPPs on the Anti-MeFi in the mirror universe, where all the mods have goatees and are evil. You should see jessamyn with a goatee.
I just did a site-specific Google search and the mirror universe / goatee joke has been done such a ridiculous number of times. Maybe there should be a warning dialog when you type in a joke that has been done too many times already. But that won't stop me!

So when I use those shortcuts in Firefox, I get the Mefi effect as well as the Firefox commands. Is there any way to tell the computer which I want it to choose?

No, you can't disable the HTML keyboard shortcuts without disabling other features. You can block this file with AdblockPlus or Script Block, but you'll lose the HTML buttons, j/k navigation, the inline youtube player, and live preview.
You might be able to come up with a Greasemonkey script to assign those keypress combos to a function that does nothing, but I'm not sure how to do that offhand.
