MeFiSwap Mailing Reminder - Saturday January 23! January 16, 2010 9:40 AM Subscribe
Holy smokes, I just got my first MeFiSwap mix CD in the mail yesterday!
Reminder: the mailing deadline is in one week, Saturday, January 23.
Have you received mixes? Have you sent out yours already? Make sure you let your swapset know (you should have everyone's email via your swapset assignment email) and feel free to tell us here how your swap is panning out.
If you can't mail out by the deadline, please notify your swapset so there isn't any confusion about your participation. If a member of your swapset doesn't participate, please let me know via email (EIP) and I will mark them as banned from further swaps.
Questions? Help? I'll be hanging around this thread and am always available, again, via email (EIP).
Also, finally, thanks to all of you who are swapping. This is such a groovy part of my MeFi experience—for many others as well, I'm sure—and it wouldn't be possible without you. You rock.

Much like hippybear, I'm having panic attacks about which mix to use. I'm almost ready to just use the first 12 randomly-shuffled tracks that come up. Let's see:
30 seconds of music from Shadow of the Colossus, Zappa, a Mahler Symphony, 30 seconds of music from Batman, four tracks from Brits with funny mopey hair, AC/DC's "Mistress for Christmas", 15 seconds from an anime soundtrack, 17 minutes of ambient drone, Jon_Evil's "Skallelujah".
I'm sure someone would like it. Welp, back to the drawing board.
Looking forward to receiving though, that's for sure.

I was asked what I was going to name my mix and since then I've been stalled. I've got the mix done and all, I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CALL IT.
Also, I've never mailed out CDs before, what are the packaging recommendations from people who've done this more frequently than myself?

I recommend the bubble-filled padded mailers that are about 10x7". Write 'FRAGILE - DO NOT BEND' all over it too. I've also used two slabs of stiff cardboard wrapped in packing tape before with no complaints outside of 'hard to open'.

Mine is sorted, just need to burn them today and send tomorrow on the way to work. I've decided the mix name is Kitchen Music because I always want to dance around the kitchen when I listen to it, but I imagine everyone else will find the actual music inside to be not at all what they expected given that theme.
My packaging will be stiff envelopes and those horrible thin CD cases (sorry!) because I need to keep it under ten mm thick, but I'd forgotten about putting in some cardboard too and have a couple mm to spare to do so.

Oh, also in regards to the packaging question, I'm a steady participant so I always have envelopes from the previous swap to use. They go behind the books on the bookshelf between swaps. If you're planning on swapping again come summer, hang on to the envelopes you get this time 'round and recycle them.

Stupid iTunes (9.02) question:
How do I burn the CD, so that the song titles/artists etc appear when the CD is loaded into other computers?
I tried burning it as an Audio CD, with "include CD Text" checked. When I do that and put the burned CD in another computer, I get a note saying the CD was not found in the Grace Note database, so all the music files just show up as Track 1, Track 2 etc..
When I try to submit the CD into the database, via iTunes (Advanced>Submit CD Track Names) I'm forced to put in an artist's name for the CD, I type in "Various" and when I put the CD in a 3 rd computer to see how that went, the artists names come up as the title of the CD. WTF? I don't reacll this being that hard or confusing. How can I make iTunes include the relevant song title and artist name for each individual song file on the CD, so that it shows up on other computers when the CD is inserted?

Here's a stab at the issue, if you are on Windows. You have to keep the "include CD text" option checked, which is one of the options when you start burning. But you also have to make sure that the I3D Tags are readable by Windows. Windows can't read the most recent version, 2.4. So right click on the songs in the playlist, and choose "Convert ID3 Tags", then choose version 2.3. Open the folder of one of the songs, and confirm that you can see the tag data in Windows explorer. Then try burning. This at least seemed to fix the issue for me, burning CDs to listen to in my car. YMMV.

hippybear: "
CDDA (audio CD format) doesn't really contain space for this kind of thing. When you "include CD text", you're actually using a tiny bit (heh) of leftover space in the music stream to store a crude tag for the song. It requires a special player to read that data, usually found in car stereos. I don't know of any computer which actually will read this information.
Exact Audio Copy will read CD-Text from CDs and use it. As will Nero Burning ROM, CDex, and a plugin for WMP10 will read CD-Text.

You don't want to use "Various" as the name of the artist for the CD. You want to have the disc identified as a "Compilation" disc, and then it will allow multiple artist names across the disc.
Tried that but iTunes keeps insisting I need an artist's name. Weird.

I've seen carsonb mention June / December in a few different places so he has already. There are usually several metatalk threads about it plus the timing stays the same (winter/summer, which even I can follow despite being summer/winter) so I don't see what else can, or needs, to be done.
I was this close to putting Summer 2010 on the CD actually since it's so hot and lovely over here right now. But I've already confused carsonb about it, figured I'd leave my swapset alone and went with Jan 2010 instead. My lucky swapset gets the full glory of my awful handwriting because I don't have time or technology to make CD labels.
And Tunes is a piece of crap that hates me (feeling is mutual yet I had it set up and it was marginally less effort to fix iTunes than to swap to different software, gah) so I've only just finished burning the CDs. Plus I realised I left the envelopes at work so they won't be sent until the day after tomorrow.

I figured that we were all cyborgs from the future and would immediately rip the mix CD and put it on a music player of our choice, as opposed to going old school and actually putting it in a CD player.

(I thought it was weird that I was only sending out 4, but I hadn't done a swap in years...)

Omigosh JoanArkham, I am so pleased you mentioned missing SemiSophos from your list, because I'd remarked on there only being four in our swapset and almost missed him too!
Thanks a bunch lewistate for a most excellent mix, which arrived safe and sound this morning.
I plan on getting mine out on Thursday, but in all likelihood it will be the very last second before the deadline.

My mix is short 'n weird, loosely inspired by the Exotica genre, which was also both of those things. They're going in the mail tomorrow. Canada and New Zealand...it may take a while to arrive, but I hope it will be worth the wait!

Um... a good perusal of a clip art collection along with The GIMP or Seashore and a bit of imagination? Or are you looking for a more automated solution than hand-assembling something?
Yes, thank you for that terribly helpful aside, hippybear. Now, anyone got any useful suggestions for free CD cover creator programs for OSX?

salmacis, basically what you want is a template and a graphics editor (Photoshop, etc.). The template will depend on what kind of jewel case you use, but for a regular ol' standard-sized jewel case the dimensions of the insert are easy: 4.75x4.75". Downloading templates can be confusing (I've never really got it, but here's pretty much any style you'd want) so what I usually do (when I'm not hand-assembling and photocopying inserts) is start up a new file in GIMP with the dimensions 4.75in tall by 9.5in wide and for the cover art go hog wild with whatever I can find on the internetz. That goes on the right half. Then I type out the track list (ostensibly, generally I'm loathe to include it at first because I don't like band names to taint the listening experience) using whatever fonts I want and slap it on the left side. Then I print and cut-out (sadly, you can really only fit one per page) and fold in half and slip into the case and pack up and mail usually just in time before the deadline. Finally, here are some extra parentheses I had left over: ((((())))).

It was a lightenin' and a thunderin' and I got in my stupid car and went there and filled out the little customs forms and everything. Done. You guys have no idea how good this feels! Send yours and you'll know this glory.
I am a productive human worthy of your love, yay. Now I just wait for music booty to come to me, five times over.
I also mailed off a belated Channukkah present. To a family member. That's how bad I am at this follow-thru-with-commitments thing.

I was really freaking out about my mix and I realized I basically already had a theme mix-worth of songs all done. All they need is some ordering and they're ready to burn and go. What a relief!
(And I'm sadly not very creative with mix covers. Sorry, fellow Zouks. I will tell you what songs you got, though.)

No, hippybear, go and read your original reply. You were being an ass. Nothing good could have come from a reply like that. I asked about a program for creating CD inserts so I wouldn't have to do it all in GIMP. (And GIMP is horrible to use on OSX.) I know at least one exists because I used to have one on an older machine, but I can't find it any more.
carson, thanks for the slightly more helpful reply. hippybear, if you wanted to suggest using GIMP, that was the way to do it.

I'm guessing hippybear is in the same situation as I, having never heard of software specific to the making of CD inserts. Their original response doesn't read snarky with that in mind. I've heard of CD-R printers that will lay a label down on the actual CD-R, and the software that runs them, but nothing comes to mind that is meant to just make inserts/liner notes. It's always been easiest to just put it together in a graphics editor for me anyway—the whole dessert AND a floor wax attitude of software usage, I guess.

For the second, I found a graphic file I liked, and used this set of instructions (pdf) to create a very simple origami CD "case."

Done. To my fellow Newbeats, I got a bit worried that the mailers I bought would be too flimsy, so I put in a small piece of cardboard approximately the size of the CD to try to keep it from getting bent or cracked.

My were in the mail on Wednesday. Theme -- Music From Across Canada. It includes songs from at least one artist from each Canadian province or territory. At this time I refuse to post a track listing because based on what's posted so far? Not nearly cool or obscure enough.
But I promise there is no Nickelback or Celine Dion.

aclevername: don't worry. My mix is pretty pedestrian; mostly pop stuff. I was intimidated when I got chuqd's and jeremias's mixes. They're obviously much cooler than I am. But, hey, they didn't say you had to be cool to play. Fortunately we didn't all line up to get picked by the team captains (aw, picked last again).
Just send out the mix. At least everyone will get two cool mixes, one pedestrian mix (and the others will probably be cool too). So three cool ones, one lame one. That's pretty good! It's especially good for me, 'cause I'll get four cool ones.
By the way The Jives, it'll be in the mail tomorrow. My theme: Civilization and Its Discontents. Really, it's not as depressing as it sounds. Really.

My mix is done and I'm heading to the post office now. The tracklist and cover are here if you're interested. I thought the swapsets were bigger, so I made too many discs. If anyone is interested in an off-the-book swap, MeFi Mail me.

I find that a line from one of the songs, taken sufficiently out of context, almost always provides a great title. Creativity not really required.

All my swap mates are from either the U.K. or the States, so taking inspiration from some excellent FPPs from the last year about Australian rock history I've sent my fellow Old Timeys a bunch of Australian music going as far back as 1970, eliminating from my list of potential selections any musicians that appeared to have significant and/or sustained success in the American or British music charts (with one obvious and one probably-not-so-obvious exception). I also eliminated any performance that I could find a mention of here on MeFi, rounding the disc off with a handful of covers by Australian artists:

1) One More Boring Night in Adelaide - Redgum
2) Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again? - The Angels

5) Turn Up Your Radio - The Masters Apprentices

Wow, I am SO much more lo-tech than y'all people. I gave up pretty quick on making the CD-text readable, though it's supposedly in there. And making my CD covers didn't include any software at all-- it involved scribbling like a 3-year-old with oil pastel crayons.

I hope this makes up for all the customs forms.

It's not a requirement, it's an option that some are partaking in.

I thought the rationale was that not everyone in a swapset will get 5 cds as not everyone who signs up actually sends a mix out. Putting the mixes up online lets people redress the balance.
Also sorry about using sharebee, file sharing and me don't get along and that's the easiest one to use for me. And I think I might an m4a or two in my mix, d'oh! And as I have a Macbook Air, which doesn't even have a bloody cd drive, how did that even happen anyways?! At this point I think my relationship with the music files on my computer can be characterized as:
supercrayon (staring at computer): PC load letter? What the fuck does that mean?! *backhands computer*
Cheers for the kind words ShawnString.

For those of you messing about with rapidshare and the likes, Dropbox is free. (That link is a referral link which gives both parties extra space.)
So far I've downloaded mixes from IndigoRain, Supercrayon, ShawnString and runningwithscissors (who was the one with one protected file.) I'll do the rest as they get posted. I'll hold off commenting until I've had a proper listen.
Personally, I think swapping a physical CD is getting obsolete - sharing a mix online seems easier and cheaper all round. I only got 3 from the last swap and I've already beaten that, even though I've only had one actual CD from my swapset so far.

Easier and cheaper is overrated. I love that we exchange physical CDs. Even my non-Metafilterarian SO, who giveth not a damn about online internet communities, thinks it's pretty damn cool that I'm getting CDs in the mail every day this week.

I know it's counter-intuitive, but there's value in the clunky, inefficient, slow-you-down, costly, time-consuming process of bothering to burn CDs, design covers, find addresses, mail them...and wait.
I had a massively annoying day. Receiving two CDs in the mail and a thank you from a CD-receiver today spared me from taking out today's trifles on my much-deserving car (with a crowbar in hand, ready to go). It kind of turned the whole listing ship around for me, thanks.
The internet is full of hugs and kisses, but you have to go out and get 'em. That can be a soul-sucking, humanless kind of clunky, inefficient, slow-you-down, costly, time-consuming process of getting what you need. Sometimes you just need the love to come right to you, somewhat unexpectedly. More touching of things, less clicking on things.
(Sorry I just sexualized your CDs, swapsetters. I guess I'm trying to say, it meant a lot to get them today.)

It's not so much the CDs... I don't listen to CDs anymore really, and the songs on these that I like, I'll find for myself online. But getting something in the mail from other Mefites is just awesome. It feels like penpals.

Questions: If I want to upload the mp3 files from iTunes to something like Dropbox, so that you people can have a listen, how do I preserve the playing order of the mix? Also, isn't sharing these tunes via the internet ever so slightly illegal?

So is burning them onto CDs and sending them to people through the mail. Home taping is killing music!
Anyway my CDs are in the mail and hopefully all of my swapmates will be receiving them soon (with an extra bonus).

Jonesor: what I did was just made dragged all the files out of my play list (so it makes copies of the files) Then just add 01, 02, 03 to the beginning of the file names.
Then zip them all together, drop them in your public folder and done.

Two points in favour of physical CDs for me: if I didn't have to send a physical object out into the world, I'd never decide it was 'done', I'd still be thinking about switching out this track for that or redoing some of the transitions. If I didn't receive things on CD, they'd just fall into my ever-expanding download pile and I'd never listen to them, or I'd take a look at the track list and decide I didn't even need to download them in the first place.
Anyway, here's mine.

I had three mixes waiting for me when I got home last night. One more to go hopefully. I sent mine out last week so hopefully they'll reach America some time this week.

Hopefully a bunch of stuff you might not have heard amid a few gems you'll recognize. Or vice-versa. A bunch of these tracks were introduced to me in previous swaps. A bunch are from the days I was listening to and filtering through lots and lots of new music (years ago). Nearly everything is ripped from my CD collection in high quality, a few per disc are sourced shadily from the internets. There are cover songs and imposters and one song twice. I like the video for You Cried Me. One of the guys who did that also did a silly video about internet misinformation called About Dogs that I like too. I put the anagrammed tracklist thingy in with the uploads, but didn't include the big picture from NatGeo of glacier cliffs and the NYT building I used for the 'cover'. Again, that's here if you wanna see it.

Ah, somehow missed this follow-up thread until now... I missed the deadline by a couple of days, but with a bit of luck they should now have made it across the Atlantic to my fellow Zouks. Anyone else can now grab a copy here. Those with sensitive ears may wish to skip the penultimate track ;)

I realllly like anagrama's mix. And not just because it has an Obits song I didn't know about. I hope he's in all my swapsets in the future. All the other Zouk mixes I have so far (4 out of 5) are also quite nice. Hippybear's has Kate Bush and Rowlf the Dog! A match made in heaven! Too bad it's not a duet, right? Immlass's has a lot of unfamiliar covers of familiar songs, which is high up on my own list of mix-success tactics. I love the jazzy version of Mad Tom of Bedlam, I song I know by way of Steeleye Span (but don't they call it something else?). And I need to make a note to check out most of the artists on Ufez Jones's 'Side A'.

I got a cd with songs all about rain! Big rain love here. Big love also for mollymayhem's beautiful handmade cd cover with an appliqué umbrella and real stiches. Makes me happy.
My fella thinks you (the collective you) and me are having an affair I spend so much time with y'all. But he's been easily bought out with the cds arriving in the mail. In fact I think he'd overlook any indiscretions between Metafilter and me if there was a cd in the mail from each and every of you. So baby, how about it?
Four in the pocket, one to go. What a gas this has been.
Spiritualists, I apologise for not abiding by file type rules. If you can't read my cd, let me know and I'll send another proper one.
My pterodactyl internet connection won't cope with carrying a full upload but here's my playlist for the Kerasia Metamix 2010.
1 Better Than – John Butler Trio
2 Headway – Bertie Blackman
3 Take My Hand – Ben Harper & The Blind Boys of Alabama
4 This Is Not The Way Home – The Cruel Sea
5 Here We Go Again – Angus & Julia Stone
6 When In Rome – Nickel Creek
7 My Culture – 1 Giant Leap with Robbie Williams
8 I’m Sure Of It – Blanche
9 Wicked & Lazy – David Byrne
10 Thirsty – The National
11 Four – The Cruel Sea
12 World Keeps Moving Sideways – Chris Wilson
13 We’re Up To Our Necks In It – Skunkhour
14 Save Me From My Own Hand– Barry Adamson
15 Mega Bottle Ride – Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros
16 Guns Of Brixton – Nouvelle Vague
17 Falling At Your Feet – Daniel Lanos with Bono
18 Last Great American Whale – Lou Reed
19 Brokeback Mountain 1 – Gustavo Santaolalla
I particularly recommend #14. It's "full of damp towels and asthma inhalers".

I've received two mixes from the other Old Timeys in the mail as of the weekend - glibpaxman's and kingbenny's. Really neat stuff, folks. Glibpaxman's inclusion of The Decemberists was really neat 'cause I'd just seen them in Melbourne on Monday last week, and kingbenny's disc came with an awesome kitty postcard! Hope my discs are making it through the postal system okay!

My mailbox isn't big enough to fit a CD in and my apartment office now refuses to hold packages. The first four CDs I picked up at the post office (thanks, guys! But I think the Swagger© is causing a reaction with the Funkatryl©). But pick_the_flower's CD got shoved in my mailbox and snapped in half. I had a sad CD day :(

just got the last mix CD in the mail yesterday. Pretty excellent stuff all around. pick_the_flower's CD had some damage on it's surface, but I managed to get it ripped successfully, so I will be able to experience it in all it's glory. Looking forward to my 4 hour car ride on Friday so I can listen to all of the CDs one after another.
I hope everyone enjoyed my mix. MeMail me if you'd like the track listing.
