Erez Elul: ready for questions January 14, 2010 8:44 PM Subscribe
Two days ago, I posted about the history of Pile. Now, the inventor has commented in the thread and is open to any questions!
I know him to be very engaged and open.
How well do you know him?

And while he might have an uncoventional way of writing and expressing his ideas
I'll say.

crossoverman, I met him in person at a introductory workshop for Pile in 2004, I think. For many reasons I didn't want to get involved at the time and only followed the development sporadically by watching the pilesys website.
I've long wanted to post about it and when I recently found out that Peter Krieg had died I finally put the post together. I was pleasantly surprised that Erez showed up.

What do you mean by that?

Posting FPP's about friends is pretty much frowned upon. Mods will have to judge that for themselves, but 'promoting a friend's project' is not good posting etiquette here.
It doesn't sound like that is the case here, to me, but the "I know him to be..." comment may have raised a flag or two in that regard...

man, that is nuts. dude has a pretty difficult way of speaking to understand, but he also hasn't replied to the thread since 5pm yesterday, so... I guess this is much ado about nothing?

Yeah this seems to be on the okay side of the friends-link line to me, unless there is something I'm missing.

yeah, taking a workshop from a dude 5 years ago doesn't count as a friend in my book.

I understand the problem with posting a friend's project - however I was much more interested in tracing the rather strange evolution of it. I don't understand comcomism and wouldn't want to promote it. What I understand of Pile is interesting yet also nothing I would promote blindly. I'll try to make those things clearer in future posts.
shmegegge, he did reply now and my guess is that he will check in on the thread again.
Burhanistan, I felt strongly reminded of the timecube website after reading the comcomism pages. I still I don't understand your criticism of my using it. Are you simply pointing out it's a dated reference? Do you think I shouldn't have compared comcomisn to timecube because the timecube author is a paranoid racist or are you saying that Erez is? I'm confused.

Glow Bucket ,
"I felt strongly reminded of the timecube website after reading the comcomism pages. "

The structure and layout of the pages is hard for me to understand (All those sudden changes in font, layout, etc.). The texts are written in a difficult way I can't quite get my around. I'm not sure I understand the content and frankly don't feel like making the effort.
The main difference to me is that I believe you have a point I just can't understand.

"i am now in this talking going to prove that for your children there is no other way than comcomism."
I love this phrasing.

"Sooner or later concomism will win everywhere in the world and, consequently, concomism will bury capitalism. This is how my statement should be understood."

I had a crack at making the effort.
As far as I can tell, a comcom is a hybrid beween a standard co-operative or mutual (where each part-owner holds exactly one share) and a company (where each part-owner can hold an arbitrary number of shares).
In a comcom, ownership is split between "c-holders" who each have the same number of shares, and "p-holders" who can each have an arbitrary number of shares. As c-holders buy in and sell out, the total number of shares available to p-holders is adjusted such that c-holders collectively retain a fixed percentage of the total share pool. That percentage is defined when the comcom is first set up, and cannot be changed. C-holders can be natural persons or comcoms, and p-holders can be natural persons or companies.
Erez seems to believe that this structure has the potential to out-compete all existing organizational forms, including companies and governments. Exactly why he believes this remains unclear to me.
However, his style of exposition does remind me strongly of some of the stuff I wrote while in the grip of a psychotic mania, and shows signs of the same kind of conceptual tunnel vision. He seems to have absolute faith in the correctness of his project and seems to expect that if he just puts it all out there, his readers will also experience the same kind of revelatory delight.
I guess it's just too bad that we're all educated stupid.
