Show favorites in Ask only, hide them everywhere else January 7, 2010 2:17 AM   Subscribe

Tiny favorites pony: a preference setting to show favorites only in Ask?

I enjoy reading Mefi proper without the favorites displayed. It takes away the focus from highly-favorited snark/one-liners/etc. and lets me enjoy the whole conversation without my eyes wandering to the favorites count of a comment.

But I miss them in Ask, where they play more of a "Yes, this is good advice"-role and are more helpful. Could there be a setting in the preferences to show favorites in Ask only and hide them everywhere else on the site?

No. Being popular is not the same thing as being right, and encouraging people to think that is very, very dangerous - much worse than the simple popularity contest that happens on the rest of the site.

I could point to a whole slew of answers which are very popular but very wrong, and I could point to a whole slew of answers which are very unpopular but very right. There are few "wrong ways" to read metafilter, but reading the popular answers as right answers in ask.metafilter comes cloes.

Hey - argh. I wish I could edit my comment now. I am sorry, insouciant, for flying off the handle there. I was being a huge dick. (ha.)

[i totally thought you were asking to only see favorited comments in ask. now i am going to go shoot myself. ech. no more late-night posting for me.]

I asked for this same thing, I think toward the end of one of the end of November wrap-up threads, and I believe pb suggested a greasemonkey workaround of some kind.

a) Install a greasemonkey unfavoriter, like Jepler's Unfavorite for metafilter.com.
b) Right click on the little greasemonkey icon, and click "Manage User Scripts".
c) Select the script you installed.
d) Remove ask.metafilter.com from the list of Included Pages.

I only favorite answers in AskMe that are really really bad, stupid, or illegal. That way I can find them again.

Why would you want to find questions that are bad, stupid, or illegal?

Yes, it is possible.
First turn off favorites in your preferences.
Then grab the greasemonkey script that was written when favorites were disabled.
Edit the greasemonkey script (right click the monkey, choose manage user scripts and edit the included pages field) and just allow it on ask.

That should do it.

This thread almost has more apologies/typo corrections than it has substantive comments.

Why would you want to find questions that are bad, stupid, or illegal?

That's a question that answers itself. Useful answers are interesting once. Bad, stupid, or illegal answers are interesting forever.

I've been leaving favorites off for the most part too. I've noticed and like that they have it set up where if you mouseover "Has Favorites " it'll show you how many without having to click.

as evinced above, afroblanco, I was so traumatized last time that I still have apolpectic fits every time I see the word "favorites"
