Mathowie was the recipient of a greeting card emergency.
Author and former greeting card creator David Ellis Dickerson (already mentioned here in the blue a few months ago) fields requests for unusual greeting card ideas in his hilarious, ingenious and thoughtful Greeting Card Emergency videos. This week, he wrote a card for our very own "web celeb" [SLYT] .

I like the specificity of "zero point five" and "eleven point six." That's the kind of detail that makes a good joke great.

That is pretty frickin cool, man!
Purely in solidarity with Matt, I was diagnosed with leukemia on Dec 4th. In four short weeks in December I went through the crazy battery of tests, the biopsy, etc. Then the chemo (ugh).
But I'm happy to say that I was so responsive that we were able to discontinue the chemo after 16 days and it looks like I'm at a good maintenance level on the white blood cells. The prognosis is great: one pill a day and I'm golden!
So YAY to surviving teh cancerz and awesome props to Dickerson for his gnarly cards. :)

Is everyone clear on the fact that mathowie does not and did not have cancer? Not that he's not a total superhero [though perhaps not made of magic like pb] but it was a different sort of tumor.

That was fun. Went down the Amazon rabbit hole and read 30 or so pages of Dickerson's memoir (and I was totally going to be asleep by 11 tonight. Oh well).
And since we're polling: in my head it's meefites, but when it comes out of my mouth it's mehfites. Weird, huh?

The pronunciation ambiguity has always bothered me. Even in my head. If only "metafiltarians" had caught on instead...

Two things.
1) Super-awesome card.
2) I can see both sides of the argument - on the surface Mehfi(tes) may seem more stylistically consistent with the original brand, but MeeFi(tes) is how I'd pronounce those words without any context (MetaFilter). The former, stylistically consistent viewpoint becomes more problematic when you consider the popular pronunciation of the word MeFi in the Meh camp becomes more like MehFee. Maintaining rigid pronunciation of the first syllable while entertaining three variants of the second (Mehta[Fih]lter/Meh[Fie]tes/Meh[Fee]) in the different words could and perhaps should be considered irrational. I propose dropping this conformity and applying normative pronunciation rules to each case and ending the fight.
Also, beans are delicious.

MeeFites.
AskMeeee. (No really, go ahead.)
Meh-ta-filter.
Meh-Tah
This seems an extraordinarily ordinary of a pronunciation thing to me.
