DFW SUCKS November 19, 2009 11:37 AM   Subscribe

Dallas sucks! Remember how much fun we had at the anniversary meetup in July, and we were all "We're besties now, let's do this every weekend, forever!!!" and everyone else was all "YEAH!" Then.... nothing. Austin has met-up three or four times since then. Even Houston has planned a couple. Dallas? Verily, we sucketh. Therefore, it is time.

So, what say you? Should we look at a date in the next few weeks? Any ideas? Shall we air the Festivus grievance airing? SantaCon? Suggestions on parts of town? Dinner? Just drinks? Thoughts? Who's in?

I am so in.

Addison seemed to be a good place last time, or it was for me, anyway. And I can usually be convinced to eat dinner. I can always be convinced to drink.

I liked the idea of bowling that was floated last time, too.

And I'm bringing my wife this time, so as to convince her that you people are real.

I would definitely make an effort to show up this time. Whether that effort would end in success is anybody's guess.

As it is not the summer, and I am actually in town, I will definitely turn out for this, assuming its under-21 friendly.

DFW SUCKS

Hence all the low pressure weather systems such as thunderstorms and tornados in that area. At least it is geographically contained because of Waco's proximity and its tendency to blow.

I won't be in Dallas this Thanksgiving. The extended fam has up and moved to from Dallas to to Colorado. So sadly I will miss this one.

AUSTIN RULEZ, DALLAS DROOLZ!

i'm having a meetup in my pants

i don't know what that means

I'm voting for: under-21 friendly (less than a year until I can socialize like a grownup!) and sometime over the holiday times, saaay between December 19th and 31st? It's a hard sell, I realize, but if I come I promise I'll be less awkward this time.
posted by MadamM at 2:19 PM on November 19, 2009

Yes, Dallas sucks. But I would still make the effort to come out and play.

+1 vote for a place I can drink beer.

I just spent last weekend at the intersection of 75 and 635! I thought about announcing my presence and demanding that you all entertain me while I was there. But it turns out I was busy as a bee all weekend and had co-workers to corral. So it was for the best that I didn't try to plan something. Maybe next time.

Um, also, you can always come down and hang out with us in Houston.

besties? people actually say that?

I know I don't remember saying that, but I can't vouch for everyone else.

And plz to have this event yes

Did someone mention a party? How about somewhere public transit goes? I dislike driving, especially since I'm in Fort Worth. Mockingbird Station too trendy? I'm game though, whatever. No Yo Banana Boy!? Boo.
posted by haunted by Leonard Cohen at 5:16 PM on November 19, 2009

Actually, now that you mention Mockingbird Station, I kind of owe Trinity Hall a favor for not being assholes like their neighbor was in an emergency. So I'll offer that as a suggestion.

Naïve question: are minors allowed in bars if they aren't drinking?

I just spent the evening crawling down the ~1 mile of Woodall Rogers. Still had time to stop for dinner and get home earlier than I would have taking DART, though.

MadamM: if there's food, usually yes. There are places that shut the kitchens down and go 21+ around 9 or 10, but that's not generally a conducive atmosphere for a meetup anyway (because it tends to get LOUD and be short on tables). In Dallas, it's not hard to find a place to accommodate drinkers, eaters, sitters, and minors, and then if the party people want to move on to a serious bar after, they can do that.

If we think Trinity Hall is a go and we can get a date and approximate headcount, I can talk to them about setting us aside some space. And Greenville is right there for the party people.
posted by Lyn Never at 5:17 AM on November 20, 2009

I nominate Trinity Hall for worst website, however it appears they have a full menu, so I assume under 21 is OK. If we did a Saturday afternoon, I bet it wouldn't be so crowded.
posted by haunted by Leonard Cohen at 5:23 AM on November 20, 2009

Trinity Hall does indeed allow all ages in, as they are a full restaurant and self-proclaimed "family friendly". So we're cool there. Mockingbird Station/train proximity is also a win.

I will also offer that they have a mighty fine pub quiz on Sundays, should any MeFites be willing to rendezvous on a school night in the interest of wiping the floor with the other competitors (wouldn't a MetaFilter team be just about required to win a trivia competition?).

So, sounds like we have a location (thanks, Lyn Never for excellent suggestion)...

Suggestions/thoughts on dates?
posted by pineapple at 6:28 AM on November 20, 2009

I'm in if we do this before the 19th, because after that, I'm on the Newlywed's tour for 2 Christmases.

My wife will be coming along, hopefully. I'm up in Lewisville, and at grad school in Denton, but I'm willing to make the trek into the big, scary city.
posted by SNWidget at 8:02 AM on November 20, 2009

This is probably a lark, but would anybody actually be interested in a Fort Worth meetup? Maybe at Rahr or one of the new 7th street places or one of the Magnolia/Park Place restaurants?
posted by kmz at 8:42 AM on November 20, 2009

I'm in. Will there be bean cake?
posted by LeiaS at 9:08 AM on November 20, 2009

and belly dancers?

kmz, I do think we have some Fort Worthians and mid-cities folks around here. You'd have to poke them with sticks to gin up enough interest to split off a FW meet-up though, I fear. As you can see, we're slacker enough that Dallas proper rarely happens.
posted by pineapple at 11:41 AM on November 20, 2009

Date-wise, I would prefer for this to be before December 16th, since I'll be heading back to Tulsa for Christmas Break soon after that. I could probably stay for a meetup on the 17th if an earlier date won't work out.
posted by grandsham at 12:48 PM on November 20, 2009

I'd be fine with pretty much any Sunday in December, and I love the idea of playing some trivia. As a matter of fact, I feel very strongly that we should lob the trivia gauntlet at our Austin-ite brethren. Do they still do those things on a nationwide (or somesuch) network?
posted by Shohn at 5:52 PM on November 20, 2009

This isn't NTN on the little boxes, but a proper live English-pub-style quiz. Y'all will love it, I suspect.
posted by pineapple at 8:54 PM on November 20, 2009

I'm in, but the 20th may be too late for most folks, since it looks like lots of people are starting travel plans around the 16th.

Perhaps move it up a week, so as to capture a larger mefite contingent?
posted by dejah420 at 8:04 AM on November 23, 2009

Oh...and I'll bring cupcakes if anyone is interested. I want to try out my new modeling chocolate recipe. ;)
posted by dejah420 at 8:15 AM on November 23, 2009

It looks like we'll lose somebody on any date. In other words, some are leaving town and some are coming in to town, and the twain ain't gonna meet, or somesuch.

My preference would be Dec 20, with the 13th as second choice.

We've got a venue, a nerdy activity and the promise of cupcakes. This is MeFite gold, people. Let's set a date and get this bad boy done.

I'm good for either Dec 13 or Dec 20.
posted by pineapple at 12:31 PM on November 23, 2009

I am really looking forward to this - every time I have been in a place with a meetup, I have always had something else to do that took precedence!

One vote for December 20.

I can make the 20th, but not the 13th. I totally understand if the numbers work out better if we have it on the 13th, though.

So, have we built towards a consensus for the 20th at Trinity Hall? If so, what time?
posted by dejah420 at 2:08 PM on November 24, 2009

According to their site, the Sunday quiz runs 7:30 to 9:30. Just as a data point.
posted by ormondsacker at 3:39 PM on November 24, 2009

Perfect! Let's start early- say 3:00 to 4:00 or so, and ease into the pub quiz.

Dec 20th is great, but I'm not sure I can do a 7-hour deal (arrive at 3pm, wrap up quiz at 9:30 or 10). Will people be there for the duration, for those of us who need to roll in later, say 5 or 6?

Item: "I've never been to Trinity Hall before - anyone know if we should make reservations? If so, I'm on for Item + girlfriend, a non-Mefite who will probably kick all y'all's asses at trivia"

I don't believe it's an option, actually. We ought to try to get there and grab tables— quiz is pretty popular, iirc.

Trinity Hall
(located at Mockingbird Station)
Sunday, December 20
5:00 P.M.

Anyone going to wear a MetaFilter shirt or bring other indicator of the gathering spot? Or shall we rely on the old standbys? (faintly recognizing someone and silently making beseeching "are you the right person" glances until confirmation received; or, boldly walking up to tables of people and asking "MetaFilter? No? Sorry" untill success is achieved)

I'm sorry guys, I'm not going to be able to make it. I had a bit of a thing involving me, a very large excitable dog, a run away goose and a non-breakaway leash. My foreseeable future includes many painkillers and no driving for a few days.

I'm sad, I was looking forward to making/delivering candy cane cupcakes, but right now I can't even get trays in and out of the oven.

I will miss you guys bunches! Have fun storming the trivia castle!

I am also reporting suck: I can't make it. I have an unexpected family obligation this afternoon; I could go into soul-crushing details about the circumstances... but it's family, and you know how it is... and I will be there in spirit having copious amounts of drinks.

I fully expect to hear about a triumphant MeFi win at trivia!

This was a good meetup, even if 25% of the attendees came in from out-of-state. Unfortunately, Dojie and I were called away early to rescue my mother-in-law from a baby who wouldn't take a bottle, and the pub quiz went unfinished. We had 25 points (I think) out of a possible 30 after two rounds.

Good fun. Recommended. Would attend again.

Hey, while I'm small-casing, Shohn & dojie - check out Learning Express, in Snider Plaza back behind Southern Methodist's campus corner. Very neat little toy store, mixed right in there with Logos Christian Books, The Great Harvest Bread Company, Food From Galilee Mediterranean Restaurant, and Bob's Methodist House of Methodist Methodism.
