Five years, same as in town November 18, 2009 12:29 PM Subscribe
Five years ago today, Matt posted "New user signups are back on" letting all us rowdy unwashed masses into Metafilter for the mere price of five dollars american. Happy Fifth Anniversary to users 17578 to 18680 from 18117.
To those who signed on before then:

Some antediluvian members may disagree, but the decisions to reopen signups was probably the best thing Matt did for the community since he started it in the first place. A stagnant genepool makes for an evolutionary dead end.

Yay! I even remember exactly where I was on that day - in the Engineering computer lab at the college I was attending. I signed up, then had to go back to my room to get my credit card. Then I had to send Matt an email because I couldn't figure out how to get the username I had reserved. Fun times!

I will always remember each and every one of you with the utmost fondness, and I hope that you will keep me in your hearts as well. Farewell, friends.

Man, when I first stampeded through the gates I was the n00biest n00b who ever n00bed.
I had been reading the site for years (thanks to gompa who sent me here when I asked him, "man, where the hell are you getting all these crazy links you keep emailing me?") but even then reading and participating are two different things altogether. Hell, I barely knew any HTML. One thing that was strange: I felt I knew people on the site, folks like jonmc (who I have now met in NYC) and others but of course they didn't know who the hell I was. "Fuzzy Monster? What's that?" And then I proceeded to ask all kinds of stupid questions and make spelling mistakes in Front Page Posts and get sucked into flamewars...
But I learned. And I made friends. And I still try to add cool links and answers and music and comments that hopefully contribute to the Positive Metafilter Experience. I've learned a lot from the posts and comments here-- thanks, everyone. This is a One Great Site, and I'm very happy to be here.

Good.

There's lots of things in the Constitution that I think need to be changed, or clarified in today's language.
There are lots of laws that are either obsolete, ambiguous, or just plain BAD LAW.
The problem I have is that I don't trust the people in "Power" to change them in a way that works FOR the citizens.
Everything the current administration touches turns to crap.

OK, for the last time:
17578 - no account activity, nada, doesn't count.
17579 - with a name like "matt123test" it is obviously not a real account, and I would think that in a properly administered joint such an account would be deleted. Does not count, unless we want user #1 to be considered the first $5 n00b.
17580 - ditto above, this one is called matttest2. Does not count.
17581 - One comment ever, in early 2005. And an inane one at that. Surely we would not deem such an account holder to be an actual member of the community? Doesn't count.
17582 - OK, it gets a little questionable here, but would you consider a user who only ever answered questions in AskMe and who has not been around in over a year to be a member of the community? And even if you did, would you, my dear $5 n00b littermates, wish such a user to be your standard bearer? I submit that this also doesn't count.
17583 - only 16 comments over 5 years? Surely we can pass by this account without objections?
17584 - account does not exist. Doesn't count.
17585 - ditto.
17586 - ditto.
17587 - only 16 comments over 5 years, the most recent more than 2 years ago. Doesn't count.
17588 - Ooh, what do we have here? This is the first $5 account we have come across that has posted consistently since joining. There are posts and comments on all of the subsites, there is a user profile pic. This person posted in the actual welcome thread, on the day, and this person has even had ballads commemorating his exploits penned by cortex himself.
I am the first $5 n00b by any reasonable definition. And as is my birthright I claim the crown.

Then it reopened but I didn't have an international Credit Card.

Ah, now I think I understand. I was lurking during the boom time of this mass wave of $5 in-migration. It seemed chaotic. Layers of cultures - bits of puffery and alpha dog challenging. Lots of good wit.
Then when I did join I got a taste of the resentment that the cohorts behind the boomer wave feel. What a big, noisy crowd up front; can I even squeeze a word in? I mostly hung out in the background.
Mefi sucks me in for days at at time; I get lost in links, wikis, posts and then resurface to wash my dishes. I fear my love of Mefi; I love my fear. I should plan a world trip based totally on meetups.
BTW, I still don't know my user number (rank?), tho I know someone once told me how to find it.

Just hover the mouse over your name, and read what the link is. For you, the link is http://www.metafilter.com/user/33193.
This means your user number is 33193. Not that it matters.
