MetaFilter shirts for sale July 10, 2009 9:18 PM Subscribe
METAFILTER SHIRTS ARE HERE! METAFILTER SHIRTS ARE HERE!
Finally, after months of prep and research into obscure postage rules and searching for a non-skeevy tshirt company, we have 300 shirts sitting in my garage that I am ready to fold up, stuff into envelopes, and mail your way. The new mefi shirt shop is here.
Unfortunately, our initial goal of getting the shop up a month before the anniversary ran into delays when we had to change shirt manufacturers and had to wait a few weeks for shirts to show up from the new company. If you're in the US and you order a shirt by Tuesday, it should get to you by Friday or so in time for the 10th parties. Outside of the US, it will unfortunately take at least a week to get there.
Printing is actual screen printing (big thanks to Devils Rancher for printing them at his employer) on Royal Apparel shirts (which run a tad snug like American Apparel shirts) in sizes from Small to 2XL (both mens and womens) and even 3X in mens. There are MeFi catchphrases on the front, with a small MetaFilter logo on the back. Shirts are $15 and shipping is $5 US, $10 International. All sales are handled by PayPal and you must list your current mailing address in your PayPal profile if you want the shirts sent to the right place.
If the sales go well, expect to see new designs in the future. I may also be selling the last of the old blue original MetaFilter shirts from a couple years ago.

Matt: Would you consider Google checkout for payment processing? I'm not a fan of paypal, and I signed up before you started charging.
Not only that, but the paypal accounts I did create, I haven't logged onto for years. I have no idea what the passwords are. I would imagine other people have similar issues.
In other words: Paypal sucks! but Google sucks to a lesser extent, and offers similar services!

You should be able to make a paypal payment without having an actual paypal account; look for the "don't have an account" type text in the bottom right of the checkout screen, it should let you make a one-off payment with any major credit card.

Also, we will eventually think of some way to post shots of members wearing said shirts on the shirt detail pages. I guess when you get one and take a photo, upload it flickr with a "mefishirt" tag and we can monitor that for new ones to add.

I guess yeah, I could bring some with me and cut down on the shipping workload in my garage. Buy them and send me an email or something immediately after so I can note which order is yours that doesn't need to be shipped, and I promise to give you a shirt and your $5 change (for not having to ship it) at the party.

Oh hey!
As a result of the Skeevy-CEO outrage at the original American Apparel sizing thread, we've gone & gotten an account with Royal Apparel, and I'd like to say that they do make a fine quality shirt. Cheerfuly shipped with accuracy & swiftness, not one reject in a batch of 300, and excellent not-leering, drooling customer service. When I got the area rep on the phone & explained my dilemma, he laughed out loud & said that Charney was one of Royal's best salespeople. I was impressed by their organization as well as their product. Comperably priced, too. I see them poised to take a big bite out of Am Ap's hide.
I'm trying to push them to all new clients who are initially seeking American Apparel. I was taken aback initially by the sheer level of vitriol, but after doing some further reading was able to see where everyone was coming from. We've bought a ton of Am Ap shirts in the last 2 years, and I'd like to swing that away from them as I can.
And if the yellow on the back doesn't look right, CALIBRATE YOUR MONITOR! Hope everybody loves 'em. I feel honored & humbled to be Metafilter's printer.

It should be temporary, as the 10th link will disappear in about a week and a half after the parties are done.

Oops, I'll try fixing those, the images on the front page are the correct ones that got printed.

If you're not joking, you can order them on the Royal Apparel site directly.
As for everyone's suggested future designs, we considered a pile of about 20 possible ones and tried to pick out the most obvious, most used, and most loved things (GYOFB and DTMFA were in the pile but I thought they were too negative for a shirt slogan).
I've seen [+] [!] stickers at the NYC meetup. They're so small and short they'd look weird on a shirt though.
Also, holy shit, but in the first two hours I have forty orders to pack tonight and drop off at the post office tomorrow morning. In a couple weeks when I've learned a bit more of the ins and outs of this whole shipping yourself thing, I'll finally resurrect fortuito.us and make a "how to run your own t-shirt shop" post since I couldn't for the life of me find a decent tutorial online. There are tons of things to know about shipping and the products to make that easier (I have a really cool USB scale for weighing and a perfect postage label printer).

There are tons of things to know about shipping and the products to make that easier (I have a really cool USB scale for weighing and a perfect postage label printer).

Yeah, but a gigantic [!] that takes up nearly the entire shirt would be fantastic, if that's even possible. Like this, only with brackets!

mathowie writes "I wish it wasn't but yeah, it requires loads of special customs forms and international shipping."
Matt if we Canucks got organized would you consider sending out a batch all at once? I'll even volunteer to redistribute if we can get the within Canada shipping down below break even. It's not only the US$10 in shipping; it'll cost us $5 plus GST each for brokerage. Sending a single box with a dozen shirts in it would still be just $5. And it would save you all that customs form filling.

Canadian attendees of the Toronto meetup can have their shirts shipped to me. I'll deliver them to you next Saturday night at the Troubador.
This will probably be faster than shipping through USPS->Canada Post.
Memail me for my address. I will need your real name and address too, so I can put your shirts in the post if we fail to make a hookup.

As a former commercial screen-printing apprentice, I can tell you that 100-1 odds are that the hole came with the shirt from the manufacturer and simply slipped past everybody's quality control. There really isn't anything in a screen printing shop or shipping that causes puncture damage (burns, stains, dirt, stretches, and tears are a different story). Some companies are better than others, but sometimes we would get orders there would be 3-4 damaged shirts per dozen gross. We would send them back for credit if we caught it in time, but sometimes you don't catch the damage until the shirt is on the platen with ink on it. On occasion, you don't catch it at all.

THIS is why I cut off my hand up-thread. We're primarily a shipping company. We print & ship shirts for online retailers -- I run but a small department, as we ship tons of other stuff, too. I have about 5% of the warehouse space for screen printing.
We have lots of sophisticated tracking software, as we handle phone service and email trouble-tickets for most of our clients, too. Until today, do you know haw many reject t-shirts generated trouble tickets this year? (we print about 15,000 shirts a month)

FWIW, fan of the design proposed by cgomez and elfgirl - as opposed to the gigantic exclamation mark (the more understated smaller design would be part of the appeal for me - also why I prefer that as opposed to text).
And thanks for the response re: Canada=International - fair enough.

I ordered shirts based on the ratios of the reported sizes in my t-shirt survey posted last month. I actually was surprised by the results at first, with L looking most popular (among all the guys I know, both slim and not so slim, XL is probably the most popular size they wear). I actually ended up ordering most shirts in L and XL even though the survey showed less XL wearers than L. For the biggest sizes, having four different designs in 11 total sizes each meant sometimes only getting a few each.
I guess the lesson learned here is that there is a difference between a survey of what size you might buy someday and the actual results of selling shirts. I trusted they'd fall along reported lines but it seems sales skewed upwards.

As just my own observation packing almost a hundred envelopes in the last day, it seems like I sold a zillion smalls and 2XL & 3XL shirts immediately in both sexes. XL is probably the most popular men's size and women it's probably a L. Men's M is pretty popular and it seems like I sold hardly anything in Men's L.

Well, I voted, then honestly, if there were updates I didn't track them, so I don't know if further input to design and such was made, or updates as to progress, but today was the first I really caught anything new about these. Without making judgements on what other people think, I can't see myself wearing one of these designs.
Also, like you, I don't think the size I would need would be gone 12 hours later. I'm just guessing if the designs and brands were set when you'd made the poll your results would have been more accurate. 40 shirts in the first 2 hours, and I am guessing not everyone that wants one is even aware they are available.
I could be way wrong. I still just want one of the originals. Or one of these blank, but with a bigger logo (preferably on the front).
I'm glad to see there are shirts. I've wanted one for a while. I'm patient. I don't care that I'm not really fond of these designs. You've said there will be others. And if I don't like those, maybe there will be another set. If not, at that point I'll just accept is wasn't meant to be.

That said, I'm in agreement with a few others above that a [!] shirt with the metafilter logo on the back would be the most charming of all. And that "Everyone needs a hug" would surely be improved by a "Note:" preceding it. Because otherwise you're just wearing a t-shirt that says everybody needs a hug and there's nothing curious about it. (And "needs" and "hug" would probably be best in lowercase, while we're here fruitlessly suggesting changes.)

IIRC, the original thread discussing this started out with a poll about sizes, and then later in the thread came the comments about American Apparel (and then Royal Apparel) running small for their sizes. So I ordered a larger size than I originally said I would.

I hate print on demand. While it means no inventory and you get all the shirts you can sell, and the quality is getting closer to a real screen print, but it's still not the same as a real screenprinted shirt and it's why I took a big risk (it was about $3,000 to print up the shirts, buy postage and supplies) and why I'm up all night all weekend stuffing envelopes because I think it's worth it.

Of course, "Hurf Durf" and "[more inside]" may be obvious popular items for XL and larger.
I would prefer a "Flag It and Move On" in an OFFICIAL METAFILTER shirt, although whatsisname's design is cool too.
others I think would be popular...
"Overthinking a Plate of Beans"

I ordered shirts based on the ratios of the reported sizes in my t-shirt survey posted last month.
My suspicion is that people answered the poll based on the size they'd normally buy, but ordered a size or two up once the shirts went on sale, based on the note on the order page that the shirts run small. I voted for my size in AA rather than what I usually wear, but those not familiar with AA probably didn't.

My suspicion is that people answered the poll based on the size they'd normally buy, but ordered a size or two up once the shirts went on sale, based on the note on the order page that the shirts run small. I voted for my size in AA rather than what I usually wear, but those not familiar with AA probably didn't.
The survey did say what is your size in AA with a link to the AA sizing info. That is what started the whole "AA is run by a creepy perv" stuff that eventually led us to Royal Apparel instead.

This. I had seen Matt's Twitter so I knew they were coming soon, but had not suspected that by going camping this weekend (the first sunny weekend we've had in Maine in two months I might add) that I'd miss being able to get a shirt ... any shirt ... in my size.

[+] (please oh please?)

[more inside]

Couple things—
First off, I've bought fan art t-shirts for bands I like, as well as made my own shirts. When you make a screen, it really doesn't cost anything more to make more shirts past the shirts themselves, so if friends wanted 'em it wasn't any big deal to make extras. So, from that perspective, I tend to think of Mattdidthat's shirts as fan art. It might be different if I felt like MDT's shirts were making it harder for #1 to sell his, but it doesn't seem like that's the case, and it also doesn't look like MDT's are a huge money maker for him. As far as I know, #1 hasn't asked MDT to stop, and #1 can always talk to MDT about using MDT's designs or whatever.
Further, much as I love #1 for setting up this site and maintaining it and much as I hope that he gets super-duper Trump rich off of the site, this is a community, and having other people also benefit from their efforts here doesn't really strike me as horrible.
Finally, since I often mentally turn Dersins into Widdershins, having you two comment back to back is BLOWING MY MIND.

Seriously shut up. If you can't look at a picture of a woman in a t-shirt without it turning into some lulzy boobies comment, you should maybe be someplace else. And yes, I know you're making a joke.

I don't think it would have been a "lulzy boobies comment" if that hadn't been the focus of the picture. I didn't make the comment, I just repeated it because it happened. I knew you'd know I was joking, so did not anticipate that reaction.
I apologize for offending you. I won't feel at all bad if you want to remove the comment.

MetaFilter on the front, tagline underneath.

Old school style.

Only just today got email confirmation of shipment. Which means I likely won't get it before the meetup, sadly. But I am still a-flutter with anticipation.

Got my shirt! My kid says, incredulous, "You spent $15 on a t-shirt from a website?!" I show him the front of it. He says "Cool! Can I wear it?" Skinny-jeans-wearing skater punk wants to wear my women's XL. I don't think so.
I did hug him though =) Thankyouthankyouthankyou!

I think "This is why we can't have nice things" would be good for the next batch, too. But, like DTMFA, it might be considered too negative....

I can't believe I just remembered this, but we must have the Bugs Haughey vs. Quonsar Fudd image on a shirt.

I love love love my shirt. I will never be able to wear it, however! I got the tl;dr, and pinned it to my bulletin board in my office (internal communications for big company) and absolutely everyone is stopping by, either knowingly smirking or playing "What's It Stand For?" I am hugely popular!

I got more compliments in one day of wearing my "Everyone Needs a Hug" shirt than I have all year. Thanks, MetaFilter!

My five year old just asked me, "Daddy, why does your shirt say 'Please Hope Me'?" My wife looked at me and laughed, giving me that "good luck with this explanation" look.
I said, "Well, on this website that daddy likes, someone asked for help once and they mistyped it, so it said 'Please Hope Me'. And we all thought it was funny, so we got tshirts to remember it."
"Daddy," she asked, "Did he ever get help?"
"Yes," I said, "I believe he did."
"Then that really is a very funny shirt." she said and she walked off. My girl's going to be a nerd!

Well, on this website that daddy likes (ColdChef)
I laughed so hard just now, imagining all the different kinds of websites this could refer to. Oh my goodness.

I'm still not sure why I didn't just say "MetaFilter." It's not like she's never heard me mention it.
Oh, god. I just realized: I'm embarrassed to admit TO MY CHILD how much time I spend on here. That's real shame, people.

Hey Matt, any chance of getting a slogan-less shirt, with just the logo on the back?
