Posts within posts?

I was doing a little digging around the MeFi archives today and found a great post on pre-cinema devices from madamjujujive. A few comments into the post snez drops in all disappointed, saying he'd been working on a pre-cinema post himself. He then goes ahead and contributes everything he'd been working on, effectively making a post within a post.

I've definitely seen this type of thing before, though I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head and can't imagine how to find more on my own. So I'm asking, Do you know of other similar occurences?

Man, I'm not sure how you'd find them. I suppose a systematic search for high-link-content comments from non-poster users would be the most effective approach, though whether any given hit was a "nested post" rather than just "a user making a link-rich comment" is a question in its own right.

This occasionally happens after explicit prompting re: a double post.

Maybe a google search like: site:metafilter.com "working on * post"
?

ericb has always been quite prolific at enhancing posts with additional subject related material.

That's not a bad place to start, juv3nal. A lot of noise in there, obviously, but seems like there's three or four leads even on the first page.

Yo dawg we heard you like SQL queries so we put a cortex in your cortex so you can query SQL while you query SQL

The people who've done it, or who "hosted" such a thing, will probably remember. Try posting on MetaTalk to get their attention. [SEE WHAT I DID THERE-IST]

Jasper Friendly Bear posted the FPP he was working on in this post. Found by googling site:metafilter.com "might as well post". I didn't find anything worthwhile goggling Site:metafilter.com "may as well post".

(I never find anything worthwhile goggling, now that I think of it)

Every comment I have posted started in my mind as a FPP, as well as the inevitable "Why was my post about X deleted?" post to MetaTalk.

DU paged and so I respond:

It happened to me here.

Of course, as you can see, it didn't start off as a "great post"...

I did it once here.

Wait. I can do a "Why was my post about X deleted?" post to MetaTalk? And you are only telling me this NOW?
posted by Nick Verstayne at 8:01 PM on April 17, 2009

Yo dawg I heard they deleted your post about X so I put an X in your post so you can post X while you're posting

Good evening, all. This is Xzibit, host of Pimp My Ride. Marisa was kind enough to let me post here without creating my own account. I just wanted to ask that you let my catch-phrase - or rather, the meme that arose from the premise of my show - die a quick and quiet death. Not so much for me, you understand. I'm just thinking about the children. Thanks in advance!

Yo dawg I heard you like both Pimp My Ride and Japanese pop culture so I put an Xzibit in your Marisa Stole the Precious Thing so you can feel vaguely uncomfortable while trying to picture that.

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I was involved in a team effort to save the Bruce Conner obit post a little while back. Several folks chimed in on that one to beef up in thread what was a rather lacking FPP.

DU: "(they have goggles on computers now?)"

Yes, but alas, the goggles, they do nothing.

I always keep goggles on my computer. The sudden dust storms, you know.

Sup dawg, we heard you like pedantry in your memes, so we decided to tell you that this sentence should start with "sup" and not "yo."

Xzibit just learned his first big lesson in life: those that come up with annoying catch phrases will forever be followed by them. Just ask Snoop Dogg. After he leaves his hizzy, of course.
posted by NoMich at 6:12 AM on April 18, 2009

Hey, and by the way, tread lightly and be respectful when you do this, because sometimes it can be really annoying to work on a post and then have someone jack it with all their own links.
posted by hermitosis at 6:45 AM on April 18, 2009

I could swear I had done this myself when narebuc sniped my Match Day post a few years ago, but I guess I decided against it since I had pretty much the exact same links in my post.

Ever google goggles?

hot guy with goggles: Charles Lindberg
not hot guy with goggles: Mystery from The Pick-Up Artist

hot runners-up: Snoopy and Jean Claude Killy

I'm never sure what I'm supposed to get out of all those "I was thinking of posting this" comments.

I'd like to see a Pimp My Ride where some really conventional guy comes in with a super pimped-out car, and the team converts it all back to perfect stock.
posted by Meatbomb at 11:08 AM on April 18, 2009 [3 favorites]

Or better yet, turns the guy into a pimped-out-car-appreciating cyborg.

Sup dawg, we heard you had a ball spinner in your trunk for some reason, so we hacked into your brain and now you like bowling.

I've done this a couple of times. Whenever I get an idea for a post, I'll usually go out and dig up a bunch of links that relate to it, but because I have the attention span of a smallish insect, I'll often get distracted and move onto something else before I ever actually construct the post itself.

Then, when I see someone else put together a post on the topic, and I realize that anything I do on it now would be a double, I'd rather that the links didn't go to waste so I'll happily give them to someone else to make their post more complete.

You could still do a post-within-a-post about posts within posts. Don't think anyone's covered that yet.
